EVs are quickly becoming one of the primary modes of commutation for urban dwellers in India. However, while traveling in a fuel-free car is a luxury, it also needs to be charged frequently. This is where the electric charging stations help us. They help us in charging our EVs mid-route or whenever we need it. While the EV infrastructure in India is still developing, metropolitan cities such as Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Chennai have already taken the lead in setting up the most EV charging stations in India. Did you know how much it would cost to charge an electric vehicle in India? If not, we will discuss it in detail in this blog.

How is EV Charging Price Calculated?

The price of charging an EV is calculated on the basis of electricity consumption. The unit of energy consumption is kilowatt per hour or kWh. However, the base energy cost is not the only charge you have to pay at the EV charging station. They also include the service cost and GST in the final bill. If you are using a premium EV charging station, they can also charge the land cost to cover the cost of the premium location. This is the reason why charging at different EV stations using the same technology can lead to different EV charging bills.

The price of the charger used for charging your EV also determines your final EV charging bill. For instance, the cost of using an AC charging port is less than the cost of using a high-speed DC charging port.

What is the Cost of Charging an EV in India?

The cost of charging an EV in India depends on which type of charging station you are using. Sadly, there is no one nation one tariff policy here and therefore, you must be informed about the EV charging rates in advance. Let’s discuss these rates in detail now:

  1. 230V Power Sockets

Some traditional EV stations still provide the traditional 230V power sockets for charging EVs. This option is mostly suited for a quick charge top-up or for low daily commutation needs. Electric bikes and scooters can be charged more efficiently using this option. The cost of using such a power station can range roughly between Rs. 8 to Rs. 15 per kWh in commercial places and apartments. Some states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Delhi charge lower (up to Rs. 6.5 per kWh).

  1. Home Charging Option

The cheapest option is charging your vehicle using the power socket of your own home. The rates applicable here would be the same as for charging any other appliance in your home. Depending upon your location and electricity provider, the cost of charging an EV at home varies from Rs. 4 to Rs. 10 per kWh. This is the cheapest and also the slowest charging option available for EV owners.

  1. Public AC Charging Stations

You can also use a public charging station for charging your EV in between your journey. In India, setting up a Public Charging Station (PCS) can be managed without a licence if the charging infrastructure is raised as per the norms and guidelines set by the government.

Also, after home charging, using a public charging facility is often the cheapest alternative for owners of electric cars and SUVs. Roughly, Rs. 6 to Rs. 18 kWh may be charged for using a public EV charging station.

  1. Public DC Charging Stations

Public DC charging stations are equipped with faster charging capabilities. Therefore, their rates are usually on the higher side. If your vehicle supports fast charging, you can use the public DC charging stations to charge your EV.

It will not only reduce the charging time but you would also be able to charge your EV more effectively. Public DC charging stations are also useful during emergencies and long trips. You will roughly have to spend from Rs. 12 to Rs. 25 per kWh while using a DC fast charging facility at an EV station.

EV Charging Rates: Final Time & Cost Analysis

Now, let’s discuss the time taken by different types of EV charging devices to charge your electric car:

  1. 230V Power Socket

A standard 230V power socket usually generates from 3.3 kW to 7.4 kW of energy. For example, if your car has a 40 kWh battery, it would require anywhere between 6 to 12 hours to charge your car with a 230 V power socket.

Let’s assume your car needs 10 hours to charge a 40 kWh battery and the basic unit of electricity is priced at Rs. 6 in your area. This would mean that the final cost of charging your car in your home would be Rs. 6 x 40 kWh = Rs. 240. This would be the cheapest option to charge your car but it will also take longer to charge your EV. This option is best for overnight charging.

  1. Public AC Charging Station

A public AC charging station typically generates from 7 to 22 kW of power. Suppose that your 60 kWh battery is charged at a public charging station that generates 20 kW of power. In this case, the total time required to charge your EV would be only 3 hours. Also, if we suppose that the public EV station charges Rs. 12 per kWh then the final cost of charging your EV would be Rs. 12 x 60 = Rs. 720. Also, the service tax and GST will be applicable on this amount.

Public AC charging stations are preferred because they provide a perfect balance of cost and convenience. They take longer time than fast DC charging points but the overall cost of charging your vehicle is also lower.

  1. DC Fast Charging Station

A DC fast charging station generates from 30 to 350 kW power. If your car battery capacity is 80 kWh and you use a DC fast charging port that generates 40 kW of power then you can charge your vehicle in only 2 hours. In the real world, this time is usually much less (ranges from 20 minutes to 45 minutes) as the fast DC charging ports generate much higher power.

Now, considering that the DC fast charging station charges Rs. 20 per kWh then the final cost will be Rs. 20 x 80 = Rs. 1600. The final EV charging bill will also include the service cost and GST. Though using the DC charging facility is the most expensive, it is also the most convenient as it requires less time to charge your EV.

Modern electric cars and SUVs that use a high-capacity electric battery usually require the DC fast charging station to charge their batteries quickly.

Conclusion

We hope that you’ve understood how the EV charging costs can vary depending upon the type of EV charging technology you prefer. Use the basic home power socket for charging your electric cars, bikes, and scooters overnight. The public AC charging stations can be good enough for charging your electric car or bike mid-journey if you have enough time to spare. During an emergency, you can use the DC fast charging port to charge your EV in no time. So, use these electric charging technologies wisely as per your preferences, budget, and condition.

FAQs About EV Charging Costs

  1. Q1: How much does it cost to charge an EV in India?

Home charging is cheapest at about ₹4–10 per kWh, public AC stations cost around ₹6–18 per kWh, and DC fast charging is the priciest at roughly ₹12–25 per kWh, plus service charges and GST.

  2. Q2: Do I need a license to set up an EV charging station in India?

No. The Ministry of Power classifies public charging as a de-licensed activity, so anyone can set one up without a license, provided it meets the required technical and safety standards.

  3. Q3: Which EV charger is fastest?

DC fast chargers (30–350 kW) are fastest, charging a compatible EV in about 20–45 minutes, while a 230V AC charger (3.3–7.4 kW) takes 6–12 hours — better suited for overnight home charging.
