For those looking to enjoy the feel of owning a true-blue SUV, the Mahindra Scorpio is an absolute cult. Loaded enough to tackle all kinds of roads without breaking a sweat, the big daddy of SUVs rules over a rich legacy of more than two decades. Ever since the debut of the Scorpio N, both the classic Mahindra Scorpio as well as the Scorpio N have together shaken the SUV segment, uplifting the carmaker’s position in the market, and offering users a choice between the classic rugged approach and a modern, contemporary take. Month after month, both Scorpios have managed to rule the best-selling charts, with April being no exception. With 14,807 units sold, Scorpio reported a massive year-on-year growth of 54%, which goes on to show the sheer scale of the SUVs’ undying popularity and the immense love the Scorpio N has received in a short span of time. With this, the Scorpio became the second best-selling SUV for the month, in addition to being the best-selling Mahindra car and the sixth best-selling car of the month.

Talking about the powertrain, the Scorpio Classic comes mated to a sole 2.2-litre diesel unit paired to a six-speed manual, while the Scorpio N on the other hand offers a 2.0-litre turbo petrol unit in addition to the 2.2-litre diesel engine, both of which come mated to a six-speed manual or AMT onboard. Both SUVs together are worthy choices in the segment, with a tough, built-to-last bodyline and true-blue SUV performance on almost all kinds of terrains.

Mahindra Bolero

The compact SUV segment is a rather competitive space where brands compete with feature-loaded and contemporary options that often ignore what a true SUV stands for. This is exactly where the Mahindra Bolero comes in. With a distinct SUV identity, the Mahindra Bolero comes as an option that is truly practical, highly spacious, and immensely tough and rugged. Built to last long, the Mahindra Bolero portfolio offers not just the classic, boxy and muscular Bolero but also the new-age, urban Bolero Neo, both of which are extremely reliable and truly tough. Together as a whole, both SUVs managed to sell 9,537 units, with a stable year-on-year growth of about 5% over the 9,054 units the SUV sold in the same month last year. This made the Bolero the third-best-selling SUV and the second-best-selling Mahindra car of the month. April also marked the launch of the all-new Bolero Neo Plus, which aims to offer the Bolero Neo’s contemporary yet classic package in a 9-seater avatar.

What makes the Bolero badging an unmatched success across the nation, is its tough and rugged build quality, great driving dynamics and ample space that can seat up to seven passengers. In terms of engine, both the Bolero Neo as well as the Bolero come powered by a 1.5-litre diesel unit mated to a five-speed manual transmission, with the Neo offering more power and torque. Mileage on offer goes up to 17.29 km/l making the Bolero a perfect city pick.

Back in April 2021, when the XUV700 made its debut, it created ripples across the market with its never-seen-before technology and impressive segment-first features. Fast forward to April 2024, the Mahindra XUV700 proudly stands tall as one of India’s most iconic and feature-rich SUVs. Selling 6,134 units, the XUV700 showed stable growth to become the fourth best-selling 7-seater car of the month and the third best-selling Mahindra car, with an impressive 29%  year-on-year growth over the 4,757 units it sold in the same month last year.

With its premium interiors, absolute comfort, power-packed drivetrain and a perfect 5-star safety rating, the XUV700’s popularity is such that it has already sold over 1.5 lakh units since its launch in 2021; a feat that has seldom been achieved by any other SUV. Equipped with the most powerful turbocharged engines in its class along with an AWD drivetrain on offer, the XUV700 comes with a 2-litre turbo-petrol and a 2.2-litre diesel engine both mated to a six-speed manual/AT.

The cult with a glorious legacy of over two decades, the Mahindra Thar was and continues to be revered as the only compact SUV that is capable enough to tackle all kinds of roads, The Mahindra Thar is an undisputed leader in every sense. Highly popular among the masses, the Thar has time and again proved its worth, with April being another successful month. Selling 6,160 units in April 2024, the Thar registered a good 16% year-on-year growth becoming the eighth best-selling compact SUV of the month in addition to being the the fourth best-selling Mahindra car of the month. And now with the 5-door version of the Mahindra Thar slated to be launched on 15th August this year, the SUV is sure to witness new heights of popularity very soon.

With a choice of both all-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive up for grabs, the Thar is powered by either a 2-litre turbo-petrol or a 2.2-litre diesel engine for the AWD trims and a smaller  1.5-litre diesel engine for the RWD models. Mahindra XUV300

Topped with the best-in-segment torque figures across all engines, the Mahindra XUV300 offers impeccable ride and handling along with exciting driving dynamics that make it one of the most popular compact SUVs in the segment. Selling 4,003 units in April 2024, the XUV300 registered a 21% decline in terms of year-on-year growth which can be attributed to the fact that Mahindra has currently halted the bookings for the XUV300, owing to the launch of the all-new Mahindra XUV 3XO; which is being dubbed as the XUV300’s long-awaited facelift that brings in evolutionary new interiors and exteriors along with a host of new features and major safety upgrades.

Nonetheless, what makes the XUV300 a worthy choice other than its solid performance is its robust build quality and top-notch features that now include a segment-first panoramic sunroof, and first-in-segment dual-zone auto AC, along with a perfect 5-star safety rating and Level-2 ADAS onboard. In terms of engine, both the XUV300 and the 3XO comes powered by three turbocharged engines that include a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol unit, a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine and a new 1.2-litre TGDI turbo-petrol engine. All engines come paired with a six-speed manual and an optional six-speed AMT.

Mahindra XUV400 EV

Mahindra XUV400

Mahindra’s entry into the EV segment, the Mahindra XUV400 is a banger in every sense. With premium features, spacious interiors, and a purely electric powertrain, the Mahindra XUV400 EV offers an unmatched driving experience that makes the electric SUV the next big thing in the EV space. Boasting the fastest acceleration in the segment, best-in-class boot space and the highest functional safety, the XUV400 is simply awesome. However, despite all the goodies, the EV still hasn’t lived up to the charm and is miles behind the Tata Nexon at least in terms of popularity. Selling 346 units in April 2024, the EV registered a hue 62% decline in terms of year-on-year growth. Nonetheless, the XUV400 still finished as the sixth best-selling Mahindra car and one of the best-selling e-SUVs in India.

Powered by two battery packs that include a 34.5 kWh unit and a 39.4 kWh unit, both packs come paired with a single electric motor. While the smaller battery returns a range of 375 km, the bigger one impresses with a range of 456 km.

Mahindra Marazzo

Mahindra Marazzo - 8 seater cars

A capable MUV in every sense, the Mahindra Marazzo is an underdog that is worth every penny. A package that offers great value for money along with a highly spacious cabin, balanced driving dynamics and a 4-star safety rating, the Marazzo matches up to what the competitors offer, despite its dead popularity. Managing to sell only 20 units in April 2024, the Marazzo despite its appealing seven and eight-seater configurations, is sadly still struggling to gain traction. In fact, it would not be surprising if Mahindra decides to pull the plug on the SUV anytime soon. Nonetheless, even with limited units sold, the Marazzo still finished at number seven.

Powered by a sole 1.5-litre Diesel Engine mated to a 6-speed Manual returning up to 17.3 km/l of mileage, what the MUV needs now is a thorough facelift/update that can help it match up to the hype of modern-day competitors as well the appeal of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. But until that happens, the Marazzo still is one of Mahindra’s best-sellers. However, this does not negate the fact that the MUV is in dire need of an upgrade or facelift that can surely give the MUV a fresh lease of life, considering promising competition in the segment.
