With the widest array of cars and service networks, Maruti Suzuki is the number one carmaker and has a firm grip on nearly 40 percent share of the entire Indian automobile market. Meanwhile, as Maruti cars prevail over other cars, there lies an internal competition among Maruti cars. While the top performers usually remain the same, their rankings do shuffle at the end of every month. Maruti Suzuki Wagon R

Spinny Assured Maruti WagonR

As one of the revered veterans of the game, the Maruti Wagon R clocked sales of 16,368 units in March 2024 and grabbed the title of the best-selling Maruti car and third-best-selling car. While this translated into a five percent year-on-year drop, it just shows how high are the standards of this popular hatchback as far as sales is concerned. For decades, the Maruti Wagon R has been famous as a highly practical car to drive through city traffic thanks to its boxy silhouette, easy handling, and fuel-efficient powertrains. This is why the Maruti Wagon R is a popular choice for most urban buyers as well as commercial fleet operators.

Maruti has equipped Wagon R with two petrol units: a 1-litre petrol engine and a 1.2-litre petrol engine. While both engines are coupled with either a five-speed manual or a five-speed AMT, an optional CNG kit is also available with the 1-litre engine, which comes with only manual Transmission. The Maruti Wagon R delivers a mileage of 25.19 km/l from petrol and 34.05 km/kg from CNG.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire

The Maruti Dzire is riding high on the recent surge in its popularity, consistently emerging as one of the best-selling cars and top-selling Maruti cars. Last month, with sales of 15,894 units, the Dzire saw a 19 percent growth in year-on-year performance and once again outsold many top-selling SUVs and compact SUVs. In competition with the likes of the Honda Amaze, Hyundai Aura, and Tata Tigor, the Maruti Dzire offers a great deal of comfort, easy handling, and lucrative fuel efficiency making itself an ideal compact sedan for city roads. And this is why, like its sibling Wagon R, the Dzire is a popular choice of cab companies.

Sharing a lot with the Swift, the Dzire features the same interiors, cabin space, and even the same 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol engine mated to either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed AMT. Moreover, the Maruti Dzire is also available in CNG variants that deliver a mileage of 31.12 km/kg, while the petrol mileage stands at 22.41 – 22.61 km/l.

Maruti Suzuki Swift

Maruti Swift

Closely following the Dzire, the Maruti Swift collected sales of 15,728 units in March 2024. While this is a 10 percent drop in its year-on-year performance, as always the iconic hatchback finished well ahead of all its rivals. With a decades-long revered legacy, the Maruti Swift is still the first preference for most Indians who want a tried and trusted family car that delivers pocket-friendly mileage. Along with attractive mileage, the Swift offers a segment-leading space to accommodate five passengers and a peppy performance that strikes the fancy of driving enthusiasts. That said, in Japan, Suzuki has recently launched the next-generation Swift, which will be launched in India in the coming months.

The current-generation Maruti Swift is equipped with a 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol engine mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT. As far as mileage is concerned, the Swift delivers up to 22.56 km/l from petrol and 30.90 km/kg from CNG.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno

The previous month, despite seeing a slight 4 percent decline in year-on-year sales, the Maruti Baleno outsold its rivals by a huge margin by selling 15,588 units. It even outsold its SUV-derivative, Maruti Fronx which is on a glorious run. Since its launch in 2015, the Maruti Baleno has been a craze among the premium hatchback seekers and this drove it to write an incredible success story. Along with a comfortable cabin, a refined powertrain, and an elegant appearance, the Baleno promises the unmatchable reliability that comes with the badge of Maruti Suzuki. What makes this deal even more attractive is Baleno’s mileage which makes it one of the most fuel-efficient cars in India.

Baleno’s mojo of fuel-efficiency comes from the 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol engine that it shares with the Maruti Swift. From petrol and CNG, the Baleno delivers a mileage of 22.94 km/l and 30.61 km/kg respectively and the transmission options include a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 5-speed AMT for petrol variants and a sole 5-speed manual gearbox for CNG variants.

Considering the space for five passengers, comfort level of seats, and refinement and frugality of powertrains, the Brezza comes in as an appealing all-round package. Moreover, along with the trust that comes with the Maruti badge, the Brezza offers the strongest body as compared to all other Maruti cars.

Maruti offers the Brezza with a 1.5-litre petrol engine that comes paired with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed torque converter automatic. Moreover, with the mild-hybrid in all automatic variants, the Brezza returns a mileage of 17.38 – 19.8 km/l. Like most Maruti cars, the Brezza is available in CNG variants that return a mileage of 25.51 km/kg.

Maruti Suzuki Fronx

Spawned from the Baleno, the Maruti Fronx micro-SUV captured a great space right after getting launched last year. As a competent rival of its segment leader Tata Punch, the Fronx promises a great deal of refinement in its drivability, better mileage, and peppier performance. Month after month, the Fronx emerges as one of the best-selling Maruti cars and last month was no different. In March 2024, the Fronx sold 12,531 units, grabbing the seventh spot on this list.

The Fronx comes with the 1.0-litre turbocharged Boosterjet petrol engine that is acclaimed for its sprightly performance. What is also on offer is the familiar 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol engine from Baleno. Both engines come mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, while there is a 5-speed AMT for NA engine and a 6-speed AMT for turbo engine.

Maruti Suzuki Eeco

A key essential of the Indian market, the Maruti Eeco is used primarily for business needs and is the go-to car for a wide variety of commercial tasks such as ambulance services, public transportation, and cargo delivery. The Maruti Eeco has successfully handled these businesses for more than ten years, making itself one of the best-selling cars.

The Maruti Eeco is available in both 5- and 7-seater configurations and comes equipped with a 1.2-litre petrol engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. In terms of mileage, the Eeco delivers 19.71 km/l from petrol and 26.78 km/kg from CNG.

Last month, selling 11,232 units, the Grand Vitara became the second-best-selling SUV. With this, it grew its sales by 12 percent over the 10,045 units it sold during the same period last year. While the Grand Vitara is at par with its segment standards in terms of features and space, it surpasses every rival with its fuel efficiency which is as high as 27.97 km/l, making it one of the most fuel-efficient cars in India. Moreover, being available with CNG variants stretches the Grand Vitara’s reach to buyers looking for a CNG-powered mid-size SUV.

Under the hood, the Grand Vitara comes with two engine offerings. A 1.5-litre petrol mild-hybrid engine mated to either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic. And a 1.5-litre petrol strong-hybrid engine paired with an e-CVT automatic. The CNG variants come with the 1.5-litre petrol mild-hybrid engine mated to either a 5-speed manual gearbox and deliver a mileage of 26.6 km/kg.

Maruti Alto K10

As fierce as the competition is in the Indian automobile market, the Maruti Alto K10 faces negligible rivalry and therefore it comfortably does a steady business. The main attraction of Alto lies in its city-friendly dimensions, ample space to accommodate a small family and economic mileage.

The mechanicals of Alto K10 include a 1-litre K10C petrol engine mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and 5-speed automatic transmission. In terms of mileage, the Alto K10 delivers 24.39 – 24.90 km/l from petrol and 33.85 km/kg from CNG.
