The Kia Carens and Carens Clavis share the same 1.5-litre engines, so where their powertrains overlap, real-world mileage is effectively identical. On paper, though, the claims differ. The Carens diesel manual is rated at 21.3 kmpl and the Clavis diesel manual at 19.54 kmpl, while the petrol manuals sit at 15.7 kmpl and 15.34 kmpl.

The Carens, launched in 2022, is now sold in a single Premium (O) trim with petrol, diesel and CNG manuals. The Clavis is the newer, better-equipped version, and it adds a 160 PS turbo-petrol, a DCT automatic and a diesel automatic. Below, we compare the claimed figures with real-world mileage, work out the monthly fuel bill for each, and note where the data is still limited.

Kia Carens vs Kia Carens Clavis Specs

The Carens has three powertrains, all with a six-speed manual. There is a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol (115 PS, 144 Nm), a 1.5-litre diesel (116 PS, 250 Nm), and a factory-fitted CNG version of the petrol engine (96 PS, 123 Nm in CNG mode).

The Clavis offers the same three, plus more choice. Its 1.5-litre turbo-petrol makes 160 PS and 253 Nm and comes with a six-speed manual, an iMT (clutchless manual) or a seven-speed DCT automatic. The diesel is also available with a six-speed torque-converter automatic.

Both are front-wheel drive and use a 45-litre fuel tank. The CNG versions add a 60-litre (water-equivalent) cylinder, which cuts boot space with all three rows up from 216 litres to 116 litres.

Because the shared engines and gearboxes are the same, the Carens and Clavis should deliver the same mileage with the same powertrain. The real difference is that the Clavis gives you a turbo-petrol and automatic options.

Kia Carens vs Kia Carens Clavis ARAI Mileage Figures

Kia Carens Clavis

The Carens carries higher claimed figures than the Clavis for the same engines, most visibly 21.3 kmpl against 19.54 kmpl for the diesel manual. The hardware is the same, so the gap most likely reflects different certification rounds rather than a more efficient car.

Among Clavis petrols, the turbo is rated higher than the naturally aspirated engine, and the DCT higher than the manual. The diesel automatic gives up about 2 kmpl to the diesel manual. Kia has not yet published an official CNG figure for either car, though about 22–25 km/kg is expected.

ARAI tests run on a fixed cycle with light loads and no traffic, so a fully loaded MPV in daily use will return noticeably less.

In everyday use, both MPVs return about 12.5 kmpl with the petrol manual and about 16.5 kmpl with the diesel manual. These are typical owner-reported averages for the shared 1.5-litre engines, and they apply equally to the Carens and the Clavis.

Shared powertrainsPetrol MT (Carens & Clavis)Diesel MT (Carens & Clavis)

Highway15–18 kmpl18–20 kmpl
Averageabout 12.5 kmplabout 16.5 kmpl
Tank range (45 L)about 560 kmabout 740 km

Load makes a real difference in a three-row car. With all seats filled and the AC running hard in summer, petrol owners typically lose 1–2 kmpl. The diesel is far less affected by load, thanks to its 250 Nm of torque.

The Clavis turbo-petrol and diesel manuals have also been through independent road tests on fixed city and highway routes. To compare them fairly, we blended each car’s city and highway figures over equal distances (a 50:50 split).

Average (50:50)10.76 kmpl19.13 kmpl19.95 kmpl
Tank range (45 L)about 480 kmabout 860 kmabout 900 km

The turbo-petrol is the thirstiest option by some distance. Its city figure came from heavily congested traffic in peak summer, with the AC and ventilated seats on. On the highway, though, it is close to the naturally aspirated petrol.

The diesel road tests came in well above the owner averages, at around 19–20 kmpl. These runs use steady routes and light loads, so treat them as a best case. There is no reliable real-world data yet for the DCT, the diesel automatic, or the CNG versions.

Kia Carens vs Kia Carens Clavis Fuel Cost Comparison

At 1,500 km a month, the diesel manual saves about ₹4,470 a month over the petrol manual, in either car. We used the real-world averages above and Pune fuel prices for late October 2026: petrol at ₹111.90 a litre and diesel at ₹98.55 a litre.

Yearly cost₹1,61,136₹1,07,509₹1,87,193
Five-year cost₹8,05,680₹5,37,545₹9,35,967

Over five years, the diesel saves about ₹2.68 lakh in fuel over the naturally aspirated petrol. The diesel Carens costs ₹1.86 lakh more than the petrol Carens, so at this running it pays back the difference in about 3.5 years. In the Clavis, the base diesel costs ₹1.85 lakh more than the base petrol, so the payback is about the same.

The turbo-petrol costs about ₹2,170 a month more to run than the naturally aspirated petrol. That adds up to roughly ₹1.3 lakh over five years, which is the price of its extra 45 PS.

We have left out CNG, the DCT and the diesel automatic because there is no reliable real-world mileage for them yet. The figures also exclude servicing, insurance, tyres and future fuel price changes.

With the same powertrain, the Carens costs ₹27,000–₹37,000 less than the base Clavis. That money buys no mileage advantage either way. The Clavis makes sense if you want more features, a turbo-petrol or an automatic. If you’d rather skip the new-car premium, you can also browse quality-checked pre-owned Kia MPVs on Spinny.

Summary

For the same powertrain, the Carens and Clavis return the same real-world mileage: about 12.5 kmpl for the petrol manual and 16.5 kmpl for the diesel manual. The Carens’ higher ARAI claims most likely reflect an older certification, not better efficiency.

The diesel manual is the most economical choice in either car, saving about ₹4,470 a month in fuel at 1,500 km. It recovers its higher price in roughly three and a half years.

The Clavis turbo-petrol is the quickest but thirstiest option, at about 10.8 kmpl in mixed driving. Real-world figures for the CNG, DCT and diesel automatic are still awaited.

FAQs about Kia Carens and Kia Carens Clavis Mileage Comparison

  1. Q. Which has better mileage, the Carens or the Carens Clavis?

Neither, when you compare the same powertrain. Both use the same 1.5-litre engines and six-speed manuals, and both return about 12.5 kmpl with the petrol manual and 16.5 kmpl with the diesel manual in everyday use.

  2. Q. Why is the Carens diesel rated at 21.3 kmpl but the Clavis diesel at 19.54 kmpl?

The engine and gearbox are the same, so the difference most likely comes from separate certification rounds. In real-world driving, you should expect the same mileage from both.

  3. Q. Is the Clavis turbo-petrol much thirstier than the regular petrol?

Yes, mainly in the city. In a road test it returned 8.0 kmpl in heavy traffic and 16.44 kmpl on the highway, or about 10.8 kmpl on a 50:50 mix. That is roughly 1.7 kmpl less than the naturally aspirated petrol, or about ₹2,170 more a month in fuel at 1,500 km.

  4. Q. Can I get an automatic Carens?

Not anymore. The Carens is now sold only as a six-speed manual in the Premium (O) trim. For an automatic, you need the Clavis, which offers a turbo-petrol DCT from ₹14.67 lakh and a diesel automatic from ₹15.82 lakh (ex-showroom).

  5. Q. What mileage does the Carens CNG or Clavis CNG give?

Kia has not published an official figure yet, and the CNG versions have not been independently tested. Around 22–25 km/kg is expected. Both get a 60-litre (water-equivalent) cylinder, and the car can switch between CNG and petrol.

  6. Q. How long does the diesel take to pay back its higher price?

About three and a half years at 1,500 km a month. The diesel costs about ₹1.86 lakh more than the petrol in both cars and saves about ₹4,470 a month in fuel at current Pune prices. Drive more and the payback comes sooner.
