Tata Punch
Taking the top spot for the second month in a row, Tata Punch retained its title of the best-selling car in India. Raking up sales of 19,158 units in April 2024, the Punch grew its sales by 75 percent over its sales in the same month the year before. While it has always been one of the best-selling cars, its popularity has risen in recent times, especially after the launch of the Tata Punch EV which is being tremendously promoted at the ongoing IPL 2024. While the electric avatar is a recent addition, the Punch was already available in petrol-powered and CNG-powered variants, meeting diverse fuel-type requirements. Some other factors that base the Punch’s popularity are its macho appeal, taller seating, interiors that replicate the ambience Tata’s larger SUVs, and a 5-star G-NCAP rating that makes it one of the safest cars in India.
As mentioned, the Punch is available in petrol-powered, CNG-powered, and electric-powered avatars. The ICE variants come with a 1.2-litre petrol engine paired with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed AMT. The Tata Punch EV is available with a 25 kWh battery and a 35 kWh battery that offer ranges of 315 km and 421 km, respectively.
Maruti Suzuki Wagon R
With sales of 17,850 units in April 2024, the longest-running Maruti car, Wagon R bagged the second spot. While this is a 15 percent decline in its year-on-year performance, it is still the best-selling car of the best-selling brand. Due to an epic legacy that largely defined the hatchback segment, the Wagon R is one of the most tried and trusted cars and a popular choice for most urban buyers as well as commercial fleet operators. Easy drivability, practical design, fuel-efficient powertrains, and multiple other characteristics come together to make the Wagon R an ideal hatchback for Indian conditions. In recent times, the test mule of the facelifted Wagon R has been spied multiple times and is expected to arrive soon.
Maruti has equipped the Wagon R with two petrol engines: a 1-litre petrol engine and a 1.2-litre petrol engine. While both engines are coupled with either a five-speed manual or a five-speed AMT, an optional CNG kit is also available with the 1-litre engine which comes with only manual Transmission. The Maruti Wagon R delivers a mileage of 25.19 km/l from petrol and 34.05 km/kg from CNG.
Maruti Suzuki Brezza
Selling 17,113 units in April 2024, Maruti Brezza held on to the spot of the best-selling compact SUV, beating Tata Nexon for the third time in a row. With such sales, it gained a 45 percent growth over the 11,836 units it sold during the same month last year. While the Brezza is abreast of segment standards in terms of comfort and features, what benefits it the most is the reputation it has built over the years and Maruti’s trust factor. While some of its toughest rivals, Tata Nexon and Kia Sonet, received facelifts, the Brezza is as popular as it always was.
Maruti offers Brezza with a 1.5-litre petrol engine that comes paired with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed torque converter automatic. Moreover, with the mild-hybrid tech standard in all variants, the Brezza returns a mileage of 17.38 – 19.8 km/l. Like most Maruti cars, the Brezza is available in CNG variants that return a mileage of 25.51 km/kg.
Maruti Suzuki Dzire
Yet another month, the Maruti Dzire proved that sedans are still in the game. For the longest time, the Dzire has remained the only sedan on this list and is known as one of the most successful cars in India. Last month, the Dzire sold 15,825 units and saw a 56 percent growth in its year-on-year sales. What makes the Dzire stand out from the rest is a great deal of comfort, easy handling, and lucrative fuel efficiency presenting itself as an ideal compact sedan for city roads. Moreover, like its sibling Wagon R, the Dzire is a popular choice for cab companies due to its exceptional practicality. Since the Dzire is the sedan derivative of the Maruti Swift, a new Dzire is expected to hit the market this year as Maruti Suzuki has already launched the new-generation Swift.
Currently, the Dzire is equipped with a 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol engine mated to either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed AMT. Moreover, it is also available in CNG variants that deliver a mileage of 31.12 km/kg, while the petrol mileage stands at 22.41 – 22.61 km/l.
Hyundai Creta
The mass-favourite Korean SUV, Hyundai Creta once again outsold every rival with sales of 15,447 units. With this, Creta retained the title of the best-selling mid-size SUV and gained a 9 percent year-on-year growth. Since it hit the market in 2015, the Creta has been leading the most popular segment in the Indian automobile market. Even today, it is the most value-for-money package in the segment as the Korean SUV strikes the right balance between spacious, premium interiors, and a long list of premium features that has been stretched even further after the recent facelift.
Like the earlier model, the new Creta offers a 1.5-litre NA petrol engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and an iVT automatic transmission and a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed torque converter automatic. However, Hyundai has added the 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine paired with a 7-speed DCT automatic. This is the same engine that is also available with the Kia Seltos, Kia Carens, Hyundai Alcazar, and Hyundai Verna.
Mahindra Scorpio
While the Mahindra Scorpio has always been one of the top performers in the SUV segment, it entered the top 10 selling cars last year and now is a permanent member. Of the two Scorpio models, the older one, Scorpio Classic has been Mahindra’s second best-selling car of all time and has etched its name among the most iconic cars in India. Meanwhile, the new Scorpio N has been a groundbreaking success from day one. In April 2024, both Scorpio Classic and Scorpio N together sold 14,807 units and saw a 54 percent growth over the 9,617 units they sold during the same month in 2023.
Mahindra offers the 7- & 9-seater Scorpio Classic with a 2.2-litre diesel engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, while the 6- & 7-seater Scorpio N is powered by a 2-litre turbo petrol engine and a 2.2-litre diesel engine. Both its engines come coupled with a 6-speed manual transmission and a 6-speed torque converter automatic, while the top diesel variants also get a four-wheel-drive system.
Maruti Suzuki Fronx
Last month, Maruti’s latest compact SUV, Fronx completed a year in the market and in all fairness, it has turned out to be another success from India’s largest carmaker. Despite the Brezza already being established, Fronx has built its own territory, competing with Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter. Spawned from the iconic Baleno, the Fronx is a great option for those who want to own a crossover that features the strengths of an SUV while retaining the compact dimensions of a hatchback. Since its launch, the Fronx’s popularity has been rising and the compact SUV has appeared on this list a few times before. This time around, the Fronx sold 14,286 units, seeing a 63 percent growth over its sales in the same month last year.
The Fronx comes with the 1.0-litre turbocharged Boosterjet petrol engine that is acclaimed for its sprightly performance. What is also on offer is the familiar 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol engine from Baleno. Both engines come mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, while there is a 5-speed AMT for NA engine and a 6-speed torque converter automatic for the turbo engine. Like most Maruti cars, the Fronx is also available in CNG variants that come with a 5-speed manual transmission and deliver a mileage of 28.51 km/kg.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno
With sales of 14,049 units in April 2024, the Maruti Baleno is the best-selling premium hatchback yet again, despite a 13 percent year-on-year decline. Moreover, recognised as one of the most successful Maruti cars, Baleno is once again the only premium hatchback among the top 10-selling cars. Since it launched in 2015, it has sold over 12 lakh units and is a hot choice in its segment courtesy of its spacious and feature-rich cabin that offers a premium passenger experience and frugal powertrains that make it one of the most fuel-efficient cars in India.
Sharing its engine with the Maruti Swift, the Baleno features the same 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol engine mated to either a 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT and is also available in CNG-powered variants. As far as mileage is concerned, the Baleno delivers 22.94 km/l from petrol and 30.61 km/kg from CNG.
Maruti Suzuki Ertiga
In April 2024, the Maruti Ertiga sold 13,544 units and registered a staggering 145 percent growth over the 5,532 units it sold in April 2023. Sales-wise, the Maruti Ertiga is the best MUV in India and over the years it has built a tried-and-trusted reputation. With ample space for 7 occupants, reliable underpinnings, and a frugal powertrain, the Ertiga comfortably meets most needs of an average MUV buyer in India and pulls substantially more buyers than each of its rivals every month. Moreover, the Ertiga also benefits from offering the CNG variants that do great business for the cab companies.
Powering the Ertiga is a 1.5-litre petrol engine with mild hybrid technology. The transmission options available consist of a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed automatic transmission. In terms of mileage, the Ertiga runs 20.51 km/l on petrol and 26.11 km/kg on CNG.
Maruti Suzuki Eeco
The most affordable MUV in India, Maruti Eeco is the most special car on this list and an essential for the Indian market. Used primarily for business needs, the Maruti Eeco is the go-to car for a wide variety of commercial tasks such as ambulance services, public transportation, and cargo delivery. The Maruti Eeco has successfully handled these businesses for more than ten years, making itself one of the best-selling cars. In April 2024, the Maruti Eeco made an appearance on the list with sales of 12,060 units, gaining a 15% year-over-year growth. The Maruti Eeco is available in both 5- and 7-seater configurations and comes equipped with a 1.2-litre petrol engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. In terms of mileage, the Eeco delivers 19.71 km/l from petrol and 26.78 km/kg from CNG.
