Vaccination Drive

As the age restrictions on COVID-19 vaccinations are relaxed for 18 and older, there is excitement across the country to get inoculated as early as possible. However, before we rush to our nearest hospitals, we should remember to still follow all necessary safety protocols to ensure you remain safe while getting vaccinated.

As you head out to get vaccinated, here are the steps you should keep in mind to stay safe and healthy:

Step 1: Register Yourself

There will be a rush to get the COVID-19 vaccine. In order to avoid overwhelming the system and create a crowd at the vaccination centre, make sure you register yourself on the Co-WIN app using a valid photo identity. You will receive a confirmation of your registration on your phone, which you will need to verify at the vaccination centre.

Step 2: Book your Appointment

Through the Co-WIN app, you should book a vaccination appointment at the nearest local hospital. As before, you will receive a confirmation of your booking which will include the date, time, and place of your appointment.

Step 3: Prepare your Car

On the day of your appointment, make sure you travel by your own car if possible and have someone who is not getting vaccinated drive you to the vaccination centre. Travelling in your own car will add an extra buffer against accidental contact. Getting driven by someone else will be helpful in case there are any adverse reactions after you get your vaccine.

Sanitize Car illustration

Ensure that you prepare your car by sanitizing all frequently touched surfaces on your car. This includes the door handles, dashboard, and all buttons in the car. These precautions also apply if you are using a cab to travel to and from the vaccination centre.

Step 4: Verify at the Vaccination Centre

With vaccines being in limited quantity, it is absolutely essential that you are on time for your vaccination appointment. Make sure to wear a double mask and disposable gloves to reduce the risk of exposure. Once you’re at the vaccine centre, verify yourself and your registration by showing your photo ID.

Step 5: Wait for your turn

As there will be many people at the vaccination centre, you may be required to wait for your turn. It is absolutely important that you maintain distance and keep your mask on at all times. Ensure that you keep contact to an absolute minimum while you wait.

Step 6: Get the COVID-19 Vaccine

When you get the vaccine, remember to ask which vaccine you are getting, i.e. Covaxin or Covishield. This will be needed to ensure you get the correct vaccine during your second dose. After getting the vaccine, you will be required to wait in observation for 30 minutes. This is to ensure there is no immediate adverse reaction to the vaccine.

Step 7: Post-Vaccine Precautions

After the observation period, directly head home and consume a lot of water. It is recommended to remain home for the following week while the vaccine does its work. Mild swelling and fever are normal side effects of the vaccine, however you should still remain vigilant for any other adverse side effects.

Step 8: Get the Second Shot on Time

Calendar date marked illustration

The vaccines currently available require two vaccine shots to provide effective protection. The date for the second shot will be notified on the Co-WIN app, which is usually between 28 days to 56 days. You must ensure that you book your appointment within the stipulated time. When it’s time to get your second vaccine shot, follow all the steps above and ensure you have a safe vaccination drive.
