Electric vehicles are gradually gaining consumer acceptance, but their higher prices compared to ICE-powered vehicles still deter many buyers. Electric vehicles are relatively expensive mainly because of their batteries, which constitute about 30 to 40 percent of the upfront cost. To address this concern, some car brands have begun selling their electric cars with a BaaS scheme, aka Battery as a Service. BaaS is essentially a battery subscription plan, wherein the buyer pays a monthly fee to the service provider to use the battery. With BaaS, the upfront cost of an electric vehicle does not include its battery’s cost, significantly reducing its ex-showroom price. This article explores all electric cars available with BaaS in India.

Final Thoughts
While BaaS prices of electric vehicles look quite attractive, most BaaS schemes come with a minimum monthly charge for a set number of kilometres. For example, most finance partners of MG charge a minimum monthly fee for 1,500 km, so the minimum monthly fee for the MG Windsor is Rs. 3.9 X 1,500 = Rs. 5,850 for the base Excite variant. So, while going with BaaS, it is vital to estimate your monthly driving needs and check all the terms and conditions of the BaaS service providers. Moreover, people who drive their electric cars a lot are unlikely to benefit from BaaS as the per-kilometre charges rack up quickly and total expenditure on battery subscription ends up going higher than the upfront savings from BaaS. All in all, BaaS is a wonderful way to save on the high upfront cost of an electric car, and it benefits most buyers with modest daily driving needs.
