What is BaaS?

BaaS means battery as a service. It is a battery rental model, wherein an electric vehicle’s price is separated from its battery’s price, and the buyer can opt to buy an electric vehicle and subscribe to its battery separately. Meanwhile, the service provider ensures the battery’s proper maintenance and replacement if needed. So, with BaaS, instead of buying the most expensive part of an electric car, you rent it, lease it, or pay a monthly fee to use it as a service. Moreover, with BaaS, the upfront cost of an electric vehicle is significantly lower than the price of the whole electric vehicle, including the battery.

The battery can be used as a service in two ways. One is swapping a discharged battery with a fully charged one at the swapping station. However, this model is commonly used for commercial electric vehicles. Second is paying a monthly fee to the service provider to use the battery. The monthly fee depends on the number of kilometres you plan to drive your electric vehicle in a month.

MG Windsor BaaS Prices

MG Windsor BaaS subscription charges vary by battery pack. The smaller 38 kWh battery pack comes with the subscription charge of Rs. 3.9/km, and the larger 52.9 kWh battery pack has a charge of Rs. 4.5/km.

With the subscription charges, it’s vital to consider the minimum monthly fee, as MG charges a minimum of 1,500 km per month. This means you need to pay a minimum of Rs. 3.9 X 1,500 = Rs. 5,850 every month. Considering 1,500 km monthly, you need to drive at least 50 km every single day of a 30-day month to make the per-kilometre cost profitable for you.

Mind you, the Rs. 3.9/km is charged for the smaller 38 kWh battery pack, and if you opt for the larger 52.9 kWh battery pack, the charge is Rs. 4.5/km. So, the minimum monthly cost is Rs. 4.5 X 1,500 = Rs. 6,750.

The other key point that needs to be considered is that the per-kilometre charge does not include RTO tax, Insurance, TCS, and other statutory taxes. You will have to pay taxes on the full vehicle value because the battery is part of your vehicle.
