At the same time, the Kia Carnival, which is also a large MPV, boasts a mileage of around 14.85 kilometres per litre. The two models run on different types of fuel and cater to different budgets. The Hycross was first launched in India in 2022. There are petrol CVT as well as petrol strong-hybrid e-CVT versions of the Hycross available. The new version of the Carnival was officially launched in 2024, which runs on diesel and is powered by an eight-speed automatic transmission. What gives better mileage, really?

The torque figures received from a hybrid engine and motor cannot be summed up in order to achieve a single torque value. The benefit of a hybrid is how it implements power from both sources at slow speeds.

Toyota Innova Hycross vs Kia Carnival ARAI Mileage Figures
Toyota’s current Hycross brochure quotes 16.13 km/l for the petrol and 22.16 km/l for the strong hybrid. Some listings still show the hybrid’s earlier 23.24 km/l claim; the figure in the current Toyota brochure is the one used here. It puts the hybrid 6.03 km/l ahead of the ordinary petrol on the stated certification figures.
The Carnival diesel automatic has an ARAI figure of 14.85 km/l. In this case, there is no petrol or hybrid Carnival offered in India. Neither of the two configurations includes a manual gearbox either, so there is only one row for each of the engine and gearbox combinations listed. ARAI figures help us start using the same reference point, but both 22.16 km/l and 14.85 kms/l cannot be translated into real urban travel figures.

When km/l figures are higher, that does not necessarily mean lower fuel expenditures. For this parameter, it is important to know both the consumption numbers and fuel prices.
Toyota Innova Hycross vs Kia Carnival Real-World Fuel Efficiency
Published tests recorded 7.02 km/l city and 11.10 km/l highway for the Hycross petrol. A later hybrid test recorded 13.10 and 18.20 km/l. The current-generation Carnival test lists 7.24 and 10.80 km/l. These vehicles were tested separately, so differences of a few tenths should be treated cautiously. The gulf between the hybrid and either non-hybrid vehicle is much harder to dismiss.
The averages in the table are calculated assuming that both city and highway travel distances are similar. During the tests in the city, the hybrid managed to achieve almost twice as many km/l as the standard Hycross petrol car, thanks to the electric motor helping in accelerating after long stops. The hybrid is capable of recovering some energy lost as heat. However, it should be taken into account that in a city the fuel consumption rate is dependent on traffic, air conditioning and other variables.
The non-hybrid Toyota and Kia are practically level on calculated mixed mileage, though the Kia narrowly leads in the cited city results and the Toyota narrowly leads on the highway. The diesel’s larger tank makes its theoretical range longer despite that near tie in efficiency. A separate Autocar drive reported 10.9 km/l for the Carnival over a mixed day, illustrating why the route and test method matter. When estimating monthly usage, take the expected distance travelled to be around 1,500 km, which should be divided equally in terms of distance between highway drives and city journeys, and the actual fuel economy of the two vehicles stated above should be considered rather than the ARAI figures. Under such assumptions, the hybrid Hycross saves an estimated ₹1,01,978 annually on fuel, as compared to the standard Hycross. The amount saved as compared to Carnival diesel is ₹72,419, even after taking into account the advantage of cheaper diesel prices. On the other hand, Carnival is cheaper than standard Hycross petrol by around ₹29,559 annually, indicating that these differences are only in the fuel bills.
The seven-seat Hycross VX hybrid in the Price section costs ₹7.23 lakh more ex-showroom than the seven-seat GX petrol. Dividing that gap by the calculated yearly fuel saving gives roughly 7.1 years, or 1.28 lakh km, at the assumed 18,000 km a year. These figures for Toyota correspond to the seven-seat version; in the case of the Carnival, Classic Limousine Plus was taken for this review. The Kia model is a much more costly, bigger-class car with a different package. Therefore, making a direct comparison with the Hycross does not allow us to determine the cost of fuel economy. Besides, taxes, insurance, and discounts introduced by dealers will affect the amount paid for the cars.

The two Hycross variants differ in price by ₹7.23 lakh while the Carnival variants cost ₹32.89 lakh over the VX hybrid. Such large price differences cannot be justified by fuel savings alone. Decide first if your passenger-carrying requirement and pay capability can be met by either the Hycross or the Carnival; use the fuel figures later to compare the running costs of the options chosen once the choice of the vehicle is made.
