While both the Tata Punch and the Mahindra XUV300 are compact SUVs, their methods of providing performance and efficiency differ. The Punch currently features a 1.2-litre petrol engine, which can be either manual or AMT, and has CNG options in addition to turbo-petrol variants. By the time the last version of the XUV300 was launched in 2024, it had been replaced by the Mahindra XUV 3XO, as it was integrated with turbo-petrol, TGDi petrol, and diesel engines. The Punch petrol manual provides a claimed fuel economy of 20.09 km/l, while the last iteration of the XUV300 petrol manual offers a mileage of 18.24 km/l, and the diesel variant provides a fuel economy of 20.1 km/l.

For buyers comparing a new Punch with a used XUV300, mileage is only one part of the equation. The Punch prioritises lower running costs and now offers factory CNG, while the XUV300 provides significantly more torque and stronger performance, particularly in diesel form. Real-world testing also reveals an interesting split: the Punch is more economical if you want petrol, but the old XUV300 diesel remains difficult to beat among conventional fuel options.

Tata Punch vs Mahindra XUV300 Specs

The current Tata Punch is powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder aspirated petrol engine, which is said to produce around 88hp and 115Nm of torque. This is available in both a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT variant. The Punch has now more options as it is powered by a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine that generates up to 120hp and 170Nm of torque, with the factory CNG model said to produce around 73hp in comparison to the petrol variant mentioned earlier. Therefore, the comparison will be done based on naturally aspirated petrol engine measurements, as they have the most reliable data and are also the closest to the regular XUV300 petrol.

The Mahindra XUV300 used turbocharged engines throughout its range. Its standard 1.2-litre turbo-petrol produced around 110hp and 200Nm, while the higher-output TGDi version produced roughly 130hp and 230Nm. The 1.5-litre diesel produced 117hp and a substantial 300Nm. This gave the XUV300 a considerable performance advantage over the standard Punch, especially when overtaking or carrying passengers.

The main difference is in terms of torque. The normal petrol variant of the XUV300 is capable of producing a torque that is almost double that of the Punch’s naturally aspirated version; the diesel version has an output of 300Nm. The petrol version does come with some efficiency penalties, but the diesel manages to provide both decent torque and efficiency.

Tata Punch vs Mahindra XUV300 ARAI Mileage Figures

Mahindra XUV300

The current Punch petrol manual is rated at 20.09 km/l, while the AMT claims around 18.8 km/l. The factory CNG version leads the range at approximately 26.99 km/kg. The new turbo-petrol is a performance-oriented addition, but its mileage data is not as consistently established yet, so it is better kept outside the main comparison rather than forcing an uncertain number into the table.

The last XUV300 petrol manual achieved an ARAI figure of approximately 18.24 km/l, while petrol AMT had a rating of about 17 km/l. Diesel variants were much better, with a number of around 20.1 km/l for manual and 20 km/l for AMT. These numbers are no longer valid since the XUV300 is no longer produced.

Tata Punch vs Mahindra XUV300 Real-World Fuel Efficiency

Instrumented testing of the Punch petrol manual returned around 10.3 km/l in city conditions and 16.1 km/l on highways, giving a simple combined reference of about 13.2 km/l. Interestingly, the Punch AMT performed slightly better in the same testing, with around 10.7 km/l in the city and 16.9 km/l on highways, producing a combined figure of approximately 13.8 km/l. The AMT’s early upshifts help it avoid unnecessary revs in normal driving.

The previous XUV300 petrol manual has an efficiency of about 9.7 km/l inside the city and 14.8 km/l on highways, thus providing an approximate combined figure of 12.25 km/l. In comparison, the diesel version gives a far superior performance with around 14.4 km/l in cities and 17.9 km/l on highways, leading to an overall average of about 16.15 km/l.

Therefore, the Punch clearly wins the efficiency battle when petrol is involved. It also has the highest fuel efficiency when it comes to the automatic variant in the range of vehicles tested. However, the XUV300 diesel remains the most efficient conventional engine while also delivering much higher torque.

Tata Punch vs Mahindra XUV300 Fuel Cost Comparison

For this comparison, we have assumed 1,500 km of driving per month, or 18,000 km annually. Petrol is calculated at approximately ₹102.12 per litre, diesel at ₹95.20 per litre and CNG at ₹86.98 per kg in New Delhi in September 2026. Real-world reference mileage is used instead of ARAI figures to make the ownership-cost comparison more practical.

Annual Fuel Cost₹1.39 lakh₹1.33 lakh₹1.50 lakh₹1.06 lakh
5-Year Fuel Cost₹6.96 lakh₹6.66 lakh₹7.50 lakh₹5.31 lakh

The Punch petrol manual has the potential to save about ₹900 a month in fuel costs when compared with the XUV300 petrol manual. The Punch AMT version can increase the savings to ₹1,400 per month in fuel costs. Hence, in five years, one can save ₹80,000 in fuel costs in the Punch petrol AMT version versus the XUV300 petrol version.

The XUV300 diesel changes the result completely. Its stronger efficiency and lower diesel price reduce the monthly fuel bill to roughly ₹8,840, around ₹2,760 less than the Punch petrol manual. Over five years, that creates a fuel-cost difference of more than ₹1.6 lakh.

Punch CNG Running Cost

When it comes to CNG variants, the Punch is the cheapest among the four cars. The car has performed at a fuel efficiency of 20.7 km/kg in the city and 31 km/kg on the highway, making it 25.85 km/kg on average.

At 1,500km per month, that means roughly 58kg of CNG and a monthly fuel bill around ₹5,050. Annual fuel expense works out to approximately ₹60,600, while five years of driving at the same rate costs roughly ₹3.03 lakh. That is substantially lower than either the Punch petrol or the old XUV300 diesel.

Why Is the Punch Petrol More Efficient?

The Punch’s petrol engine has way less power and torque when compared to the turbo-petrol of the XUV300, but it saves more in terms of fuel consumption when used as per the requirement. The turbo-petrol of the XUV300 performs better, with 200 Nm of torque for speed as well as effortless overtaking, but it consumes more fuel every time it is used, especially during stop/start conditions.

The Punch’s relatively modest 115Nm output encourages a more efficiency-focused driving style. Its AMT also shifts up early, which explains why it actually performed slightly better than the manual in real-world testing. The trade-off is that the Punch needs more planning when overtaking or climbing with a full passenger load.

The diesel version of the XUV300 brings together the superb fuel efficiency of the earlier XUV300s with 300 Nm torque. This is why it continues to be a popular option in the pre-owned car segment. However, one needs to consider certain aspects like the age, condition, and service record of the used diesel car while judging its overall economy.

Tata Punch vs Mahindra XUV300 Price

The current 2026 Tata Punch sits broadly between ₹5.75 lakh and ₹10.77 lakh ex-showroom depending on petrol, turbo-petrol, CNG, manual or AMT configuration. This gives buyers a wide choice of efficiency and performance levels while keeping the Punch relatively affordable.

The XUV300 is no longer available in new versions. Before being succeeded by the XUV3XO, its last known ex-showroom pricing was roughly ₹7.99 lakh to ₹14.76 lakh. This information is suitable merely for reference purposes, as anyone looking for the XUV300 now would check the prices of used cars only.

The Punch has the upper hand here since it continues to be available in the market and is backed by warranty services. Buying the XUV300 may be an economical option provided it is priced marginally lower than its new competitors and is well-maintained.

Used Mahindra XUV300 Cars

Summary

The Tata Punch is the better petrol mileage choice. Its petrol manual returns around 13.2 km/l in the real-world reference, while the AMT improves that to approximately 13.8 km/l. The XUV300 petrol manual sits lower at around 12.25 km/l, largely because its turbocharged engine delivers considerably more torque and performance.

The diesel version of the Mahindra XUV300 gives superior traditional fuel economy of about 16.15 km/l using the same test model, besides producing 300 Nm of torque. Hence, a used XUV300 diesel still stands as an effective option for buyers planning to drive many kilometres per year.

Overall, choose the Tata Punch if you want a current new car, better petrol efficiency and the lowest possible running cost through its CNG option. Consider the used Mahindra XUV300 if stronger performance and diesel economy matter more, but remember that the XUV300 has been discontinued and replaced by the XUV 3XO.
