Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV 3XO are two most talked-about cars in the compact SUV segment of India. Tata Nexon is known for its rugged build-quality and higher seating position whereas XUV 3XO is known for its broader cabin and powerful engine. Nexon is available with multiple fuel types including petrol, diesel, CNG, and electric. Mahindra 3XO is mainly available in diesel and petrol engine options. Also, recently Mahindra has also rolled out its EV version recently. Tata Nexon comes with the 1.5-litre diesel and 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine options. The CNG variants are paired with the 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine. 3XO offers 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol (MPFi) engine, 1.5-litre CRDe diesel engine, and 1.2-litre TGDI (performance variants) engine.

Though Mahindra 3XO and Tata Nexon fall in the same category, there is a considerable difference when it comes to the fuel-efficiency of these cars. Tata Nexon outshines 3XO when it comes to the mileage of diesel variants but 3XO claims a higher mileage on paper if we compare their petrol variants. However, there can be a considerable difference between claimed mileage vs real-world mileage of cars. In this blog, we will discuss the mileage difference across the powertrains of Nexon and 3XO and determine how they translate into periodic fuel costs.

The difference is the kerb weight of Tata Nexon vs Mahindra 3XO is significant, especially when it comes to the diesel models (difference = 100 kg). This is one of the reasons why 3XO offers lesser mileage as compared to the lighter cars like Nexon. The power and torque generated by 3XO variants is much higher than the power and torque of Nexon variants. This higher power might influence their mileage, especially during short runs and city driving. Also, Nexon comes with multiple transmission options and the mileage between each of these drivetrain can vary slightly.

Tata Nexon vs Mahindra XUV 3XO: ARAI Mileage Figures

Mahindra XUV 3XO is known for its punchy driving experience whereas Nexon is designed for a more sedate driving experience suitable for urban buyers. Also, XUV 3XO is a fun-to-drive car whereas Nexon tries to balance power, performance, and mileage. The higher power of XUV 3XO eats away at its mileage, especially when we compare their diesel variants. The claimed ARAI mileage figures for both these cars is given below:

Tata Nexon vs Mahindra XUV 3XO: Real World Fuel-Efficiency

The below table gives you a glimpse of the difference between claimed mileage and real-world mileage of each powertrain of Tata Nexon and Mahindra 3XO:

It is often seen that less-powerful cars like Nexon deliver more mileage in the city as compared to more powerful cars like 3XO. However, the higher power could also be an advantage on the highways. For instance, the high-gear ratio of 3XO enables it to cruise at higher speeds even if the RPMs are on the lower side. This may translate to better fuel-efficiency, especially for long trips. However, as the engines of Nexon are inherently tuned for fuel-efficiency, they might still be able to deliver higher mileage on the highways. If we compare the real-world mileage of Nexon vs 3XO, Nexon proves to be the overall winner in terms of fuel-efficiency whereas 3XO proves to be slightly better in some powertrains.
