Maruti Suzuki plans to make core ADAS functions standard on its upcoming cars in India. To do that, it is developing a low-cost system that would suit the indian road conditions. “Fitting expensive advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) only to a few luxury cars does not reduce accidents across society,” said Katsuhiro Kato, Suzuki’s chief technology officer, at the company’s recent technology strategy briefing. Maruti Suzuki’s goal is to make accident prevention accessible to more people. Kato points out accident death count crossed more than 1.77 lakh in India in 2024. Key highlights for this proposed system are the use of cameras and AI tech, which removes the need for a front radar, and work on car designs with lighter bodies to protect occupants in a crash.

Core ADAS functions to become standard

Kato said Maruti Suzuki wants to include features like automatic emergency braking and lane departure prevention on every car; however, extra comfort and convenience features would stay with the higher variants. It is called “just-right ADAS”, a system that is shaped for Indian traffic and built to keep the cost down.

Cameras and AI to eliminate the need for a front radar

To reduce the cost, Maruti Suzuki is planning to use high-resolution cameras with AI chips and Build Driver and occupant monitoring systems into the ADAS. The company has proposed to drop the front radar in the proposed system. It is targeting “major cost reductions” while still maintaining “equal or better safety performance”. Maruti Suzuki has not shared performance data for a production version, so for now these are development targets.

Maruti Suzuki approaches safety from two sides: first, preventing accidents with ADAS and second, protecting people inside the car if a crash happens. Alongside its electronic systems, it is also developing car designs with lighter body structures to keep occupants safer in a collision.

New electronic architecture could cut costs

The proposed ADAS plan is a part of Maruti Suzuki’s wider “SDV Right” strategy, which aims to simplify the electronic architecture of its future cars. The company plans to bring communication, power distribution, and body control functions into a Central Zone ECU. This estimate would cost 30% less and weigh 15% less than the current arrangement.

Maruti Suzuki has not announced which of their models will get the new ADAS system and when. For now, in the small-car segment, the Baleno is the most affordable Maruti Suzuki car with an ADAS suite, introduced with its recent facelift. None of its premium hatchback rivals currently offers this technology.

Upcoming Maruti Suzuki Models with ADAS Feature

Maruti is finally getting serious about ADAS. The e Vitara already offers full Level 2 ADAS, with a radar and camera setup that handles things like adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist, and the updated Brezza now offers Level 1 features like blind spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert. Next up, the Grand Vitara facelift is expected to get full Level 2 ADAS to keep up with its rivals, and Fronx test cars have been spotted carrying ADAS hardware, so it looks like ADAS is coming to more affordable Marutis too.

Summary

Maruti Suzuki wants to make ADAS standard across its future cars, not just the expensive ones. Its CTO, Katsuhiro Kato, says putting ADAS only on luxury cars won’t cut road deaths, which crossed 1.77 lakh in India in 2024. Maruti’s answer is “just-right ADAS,” a low-cost system built for Indian roads. It uses cameras and AI instead of a front radar to bring costs down. Core features like automatic emergency braking and lane departure prevention would come on every car, while comfort features stay on higher variants. Maruti is also working on lighter car bodies that protect occupants better and a simpler electronic setup that’s 30% cheaper and 15% lighter. No models or timelines have been announced yet.

Right now, four Marutis offer ADAS. The Victoris, Baleno, and e Vitara get Level 2, and the Baleno is the only premium hatchback in its segment with it. The Brezza gets Level 1. Next in line are the Grand Vitara and Fronx, which look set to get ADAS soon.
