The percentage of the road tax in Karnataka for private vehicles is between 13% and 18%, but the special rate of 5% to 10% applies to battery-electric vehicles. The tax amount finally is inclusive of 11% cess on the tax amount and ₹1000 cess for private vehicles.

Karnataka has some of the highest car-registration taxes in India. The amount is generally collected as lifetime tax when a new private car is registered in the state.

The applicable tax slab is calculated based on the cost of the vehicle and whether it is a battery-electric vehicle. However, petrol/diesel/CNG/hybrid vehicles are put under the regular private vehicle slabs unless a particular exemption applies.

The present rates took effect on 1 April 2026 under the Karnataka Motor Vehicles Taxation Act.

Karnataka road-tax rates for private cars

The following lifetime-tax rates apply to new private motor cars, jeeps, omni buses and qualifying private-service vehicles with a floor area of up to five square metres.

Cost of the vehicleBase lifetime-tax rate
Up to ₹5 lakh13 percent
Above ₹5 lakh and up to ₹10 lakh14 percent
Above ₹10 lakh and up to ₹20 lakh17 percent
Above ₹20 lakh18 percent

For instance, a vehicle costing exactly ₹10 lakh would qualify under the 14% slab. However, any increase, however small, taking the cost of the vehicle to ₹10 lakh or more would put it under the 17% slab.

These rates apply across Karnataka. The main percentage does not change merely because the vehicle is registered in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru or another city.

Electric-car road tax in Karnataka

Battery-electric cars have a separate lifetime-tax table.

Electric vehicle costBase lifetime-tax rate
Up to ₹10 lakh5 percent
Above ₹10 lakh and up to ₹25 lakh8 percent
Above ₹25 lakh10 percent

Previous information that electric cars costing below ₹25 lakh are entirely exempt is outdated now. Starting from April 1, 2026, even a low-cost battery-electric vehicle will be taxed according to the slab.

The tax table applies specifically to battery-operated vehicles that run on electricity.

Are hybrid cars exempt from Karnataka road tax?

Hybrid cars should not automatically be classified as battery-electric vehicles.

The exclusive separate 5, 8, and 10% rates will apply to electric vehicles and batteries. A mild hybrid, full hybrid, or plug-in hybrid operates on a combustion engine, so they are not automatically considered under the battery-EV category.

Unless a separate exemption or notification applies to the specific vehicle, a hybrid private car will generally be assessed under the regular cost-based car slabs.

The assessment of the dealer or registering authority should be taken before finalising the purchase, as it is mandatory to check for certain terms like electric hybrid or self-charging electric vehicle used by the manufacturer.

Cess added to Karnataka road tax.

The base lifetime-tax percentage is not the complete amount.

Karnataka charges 11% cess on road tax paid under Section 3. It is worth noting that this cess is 11% of the tax and not the total vehicle cost.

For example, when the base road tax is ₹1 lakh:

Cess = 11 percent of ₹1 lakh = ₹11,000

Apart from that, a ₹1,000 cess is charged during registration of any non-transport personal motor vehicle under the Karnataka State Motor Transport Workers and Others Social Security and Welfare Fund.

How is Karnataka road tax calculated?

A simple calculation for a new private car is:

  • Vehicle cost × applicable tax rate = base lifetime tax

Then calculate:

  • Base lifetime tax × 11 percent = cess

Finally, add:

  • ₹1,000 additional motor-car cess

The amount shown does not include any fees for the central register as well as fees specific to each transaction.

Which vehicle price is used for the calculation?

Road tax is not calculated on the car’s on-road price.

If the vehicle is produced in India, the statutory value is determined based on the invoice of the manufacturer or the seller and involves applicable GST, etc.

The following are separate from the lifetime-tax calculation:

  • Insurance premium
  • Central registration fee
  • HSRP charges
  • FASTag cost
  • Hypothecation fee
  • Loan interest
  • Dealer accessories

For the imported vehicles, the amount is determined based on a wider cost concept that may include valuation of the vehicle, customs duty, transport costs and applicable taxes.

Is lifetime tax optional?

For a newly registered private car covered by the lifetime-tax schedule, the tax is paid in advance as a lump sum.

Annual tax is generally not optional. Upon payment, the vehicle is covered for the duration of use under the provisions of tax laws active in the state of Karnataka, provided that there are no changes in classification or usage of the vehicle.

A normal transfer of ownership within Karnataka does not mean that the complete lifetime tax must be paid again.

On the other hand, unpaid tax can be associated with a vehicle. The law of Karnataka allows for recovering any taxes due from those people who take possession of the vehicle under circumstances in which tax is still due.

Road tax for an out-of-state car in Karnataka

Any automobile that is not registered in Karnataka has to pay taxes as per the applicable state law after spending a certain period in Karnataka as stated under the laws of Karnataka.

This 30-day tax provision is different from the central re-registration rule.

Section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act states that an automobile that has been located in another state for over 12 months normally has to apply for the registration mark.

Therefore:

  • Karnataka tax liability can arise after more than 30 days.
  • Assignment of a Karnataka registration mark generally becomes relevant after more than 12 months.
  • Paying tax does not automatically complete the re-registration process.

If the automobile has just been visiting Karnataka, it is essential to create a record of the entry date of the automobile into Karnataka.

Age-based road tax for a used out-of-state car

Karnataka does not normally charge the complete new-car lifetime tax on an older vehicle entering from another state. Instead, a percentage of the new-vehicle lifetime tax is applied according to the vehicle’s age.

Age from original registrationPercentage of new-car lifetime tax
Up to 2 years93 percent
More than 2 and up to 3 years87 percent
More than 3 and up to 4 years81 percent
More than 4 and up to 5 years75 percent
More than 5 and up to 6 years69 percent
More than 6 and up to 7 years64 percent
More than 7 and up to 8 years59 percent
More than 8 and up to 9 years54 percent
More than 9 and up to 10 years49 percent
More than 10 and up to 11 years45 percent
More than 11 and up to 12 years41 percent
More than 12 and up to 13 years37 percent
More than 13 and up to 14 years33 percent
More than 14 and up to 15 years29 percent
More than 15 years25 percent

First of all, the regional transport office (RTO) calculates the lifetime tax applicable based on the price of the vehicle. Then, the RTO applies a percentage based on the age of the vehicle. This same procedure is used in the case of battery electric vehicles as well.

How to pay Karnataka road tax online

The Karnataka Transport Department directs vehicle owners to Parivahan’s Vehicle Related Services for online tax and registration services.

The general process is:

  1. Open the official Parivahan Vehicle Related Services portal.
  2. Select Karnataka.
  3. Enter the vehicle registration number and requested chassis details.
  4. Select the available tax or fee service.
  5. Review the tax assessment.
  6. Complete the payment using an available digital method.
  7. Save the receipt.

The lifetime tax for a new vehicle is usually paid at the time of registration through the dealership and the registration authority.

An out-of-state transfer, re-registration or refund application may still require document verification or a visit to the RTO even when part of the process begins online.

Documents that may be required

The exact documents depend on the transaction, but they may include:

  • Registration certificate
  • Original vehicle invoice
  • Active insurance
  • Valid PUC certificate where applicable
  • Karnataka address proof
  • Identity proof
  • Tax-payment receipt
  • No Objection Certificate from the original RTO
  • Loan or financier documents where applicable
  • Proof of the vehicle’s entry or residence in Karnataka
  • Forms required for transfer or assignment of a new registration mark

Always check the list of documents provided on the portal or approach the concerned Karnataka RTO before filing the application.

Penalty for not paying Karnataka road tax

A vehicle should not be used in Karnataka without paying tax when tax has become legally due.

Tax can be verified by authorised officials through stopping a vehicle. If tax is still not paid, the law of Karnataka permits impounding of the vehicle.

When tax remains unpaid for 30 days after seizure, the law also permits recovery through sale of the vehicle after notice and consideration of objections. The vehicle must not be sold when the outstanding tax is paid before the sale.

The final amount can comprise tax dues, cess, penalty, and others as determined by the authority.

Green tax in Karnataka

Green tax applies when an older vehicle reaches the relevant registration or fitness-renewal stage.

For a private non-transport vehicle:

VehicleGreen tax
Two-wheeler after 15 years₹250
Private car after 15 years₹500

The fee of ₹500 is applicable for registration certificate renewal of personal vehicles after 15 years of service. It does not refer to a general annual diesel fee.

A transport vehicle completing seven years attracts green tax of ₹200 per year at fitness-certificate renewal.

Karnataka road-tax refund

A road-tax refund may be considered when:

  • A vehicle is moved permanently from Karnataka to another state following a change of address.
  • Ownership is transferred to a person in another state.
  • Registration is cancelled after the vehicle is scrapped due to an accident or another qualifying reason.

When it comes to interstate relocation, the proof of transfer or change of address must be submitted to Karnataka for obtaining the refund.

The refund is calculated using the statutory refund schedule. It is not necessarily a simple straight-line calculation over 15 years.

The owner should retain:

  • Karnataka tax receipt
  • Original RC
  • NOC
  • New-state registration proof
  • New tax-payment receipt
  • Address or ownership-transfer proof
  • Bank and identity details requested by the RTO

Verify the present procedure for application with the RTO of Karnataka, where the tax had been paid.

What to check when buying a used car

Before buying a used car in Karnataka, verify:

  • Karnataka registration status
  • Lifetime-tax payment
  • Tax receipt or Vahan record
  • Pending tax demand
  • Outstanding penalty or cess
  • Ownership-transfer status
  • NOC for an out-of-state vehicle
  • Original invoice
  • Date the car entered Karnataka
  • Age-based tax assessment
  • RC renewal and green-tax status for an older car

It should not be assumed that with the sale of the vehicle, the tax obligations of the seller are cancelled and may be recovered from the new owner of the vehicle.
