Mahindra has launched an updated version of its 3-door Thar in India with a new ‘OG’ badge on the tailgate, offering a slew of mechanical upgrades, fresh design touches, and enhanced safety features. The Thar OG prices in India start at Rs 10.32 lakh and go up to Rs 18.99 lakh (ex-showroom).
Bookings for the SUV are currently open. Mahindra has stated that introductory pricing would remain in force through November 30, 2026, with customer deliveries set to commence on October 11, 2026.
Price Range and Variants
The Thar OG is available in three variants: AXT, LXT and ZXT. There is ample choice on offer with petrol and diesel engine options, manual and automatic gearboxes, and front-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive systems. The entry-level petrol model starts at Rs 10.32 lakh (ex-showroom), and comes in 1.5-litre diesel manual and rear-wheel-drive form only, retaining the same price as before. Whereas the LXT and ZXT variants start at Rs 18.99 lakh for the top-spec diesel automatic 4WD.
Upgraded Engines and Performance
Under the hood, Mahindra has uprated most of the powertrain options to deliver punchier performance. The 1.5-litre diesel continues to make 119hp and 300Nm. However, the larger 2.2-litre diesel now produces 152hp and 330Nm, a handy increase of 18hp and 30Nm over the outgoing model. Similarly, the 2.0-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol now pushes out 162hp and 330Nm, representing a bump of 10hp and up to 30Nm.
New Ride and Handling Features
Driving the Thar should now feel significantly easier and more comfortable thanks to a major shift from hydraulic steering to a new Electric Power Steering (EPS) system, which solves the cumbersome steering feel at low speeds. Underneath, the SUV is built on Mahindra’s M_Glyde 4G platform for higher structural stiffness, paired with a rear Pentalink suspension and DAVINCI damping technology. Off-road enthusiasts will also appreciate the addition of an Electronic Locking Differential (ELD) and dedicated terrain modes for Mud, Sand, and Snow on the 4WD variants.
Fresh Styling and Interior Updates
Visually, the Thar OG stands out with a redesigned front grille, updated bumpers, and subtle ‘OG’ badges. The top-spec ZXT trim adds a premium touch with C-shaped LED DRLs, LED headlamps, and new 19-inch alloy wheels, alongside two new colour options: Artemis Silver and Jeans Blue. Inside, the cabin receives Truffle Brown leatherette upholstery, second-row armrests with built-in cupholders, reduced noise levels, and a 10.25-inch touchscreen from the LXT trim upwards.
Improved Safety
The safety has been given a significant improvement in this update. An ESP 9.3 suite comprising rollover mitigation, traction control, and hill-hold control comes standard on all variants starting with the base AXT. On the other hand, for the top-tier ZXT, Mahindra has brought in a 6-airbag setup with segment-first protection for the head, pelvis, thorax, and shoulder, along with all-round disc brakes, a tyre-pressure monitoring system, and a rearview camera.
With the improvements made in the Mahindra Thar OG, it should resolve most of the usual practical and comfort drawbacks of the outgoing model while also keeping its iconic image intact. Thus, whether you are looking for an easy-to-handle everyday commuter or a capable weekend off-roader, the revised version has a variant for almost everyone in the category.
