One fine morning you decide to go early to work in hopes of coming back home early, you start your car and just drive away happily. You feel that providence is on your side as the traffic is low and you made a good decision going to work early. At the red light, you stop and see a uniformed police officer coming to you and by the time you realize it, he punches a few buttons on a device that he has in his hands, knocks on your window and hands you a piece of paper for driving without a seatbelt. You park your car, reach for your wallet and find that there is no cash in it, after much discussion the cop lets you go and asks you to submit your license which you will get after you pay the penalty. Paying the challan is another time taking task, and in case you don’t pay it in the stipulated time, be prepared to spend long hours in court. However, to make things easier for citizens there is now a provision of paying the challan online, which we will be discussing in this article.

What is an e-Challan?

A challan is a ticket that is issued by the traffic police to an individual caught violating traffic rules, like jumping a red light or parking in a no-parking zone. On obtaining the challan the violator can either submit the challan on the spot by paying the penalty and receive the receipt or go to the nearest police station to pay and get the receipt. An e-Challan on the other hand is generated electronically by a traffic cop through a device with them. The payment can be made on the spot or on the website of the state transport department.

FAQs

Is e-Challan required to be paid immediately?

No, you are not required to pay the penalty immediately and neither can the traffic police force you to pay the penalty immediately. However, we would recommend that you pay it within the stipulated time, following which it will go to the court and this will make the process more complicated.

Who gives the e-Challan?

A police officer above the rank of Traffic Branch officer or an Assistant Sub Inspector has the powers to impose a challan on a traffic violator.

What happens if I am not able to pay the penalty immediately?

You have the right to defer your payment to a later date when you are issued a challan. However, you will have to submit your driving license and take a receipt for the same, so that you are able to get your license back after payment.

Does the e-Challan reach home?

Yes, an e-Challan can reach your home within 15 days from the date of violation. This system is present in many cities and the government plans to expand it to other regions as well.

Are e-Challans automated?

Some traffic intersections have automated cameras that identify the offense, and immediately notify the police department, which then sends the notification to the concerned person.
