Many lenders can approve a used car loan within 24 hours for used cars. However, the entire process from application to final loan disbursement can require 3 to 7 working days. Also, the loan approval timeline can vary from one bank to another or from one financier to another. This happens because different loan lending firms and banks adopt different procedures to grant used car loan approval. In this blog, we will walk you through the entire process to make it easy for you to understand.

Stages Involved in Used Car Loan Approval

Pre-approved loans are faster because the lender has already assessed your credit profile, but KYC, the car’s documents, and the loan agreement are still required. So, they are usually processed faster and might be disbursed within 24–48 hours. However, apart from pre-approved loans, most other used car loans involve these stages that extend the approval time:

Checking Eligibility

Most used car loan providers verify the eligibility of the applicant before granting loan approvals. For verifying the loan eligibility, the applicant simply has to enter their age, salary, employment status, and other details. Most lenders require you to be 21–65 years old at the end of the loan tenure (some allow up to 70 for self-employed applicants). Minimum income, work experience, and credit score also count. If the applicant meets these criteria, the lending platform considers them eligible for the used car loan.

Loan Application

After verifying the applicant’s eligibility, the bank or financing firm will ask them to fill out an application form. The application form contains all the details, including name, address, employer name, current CTC, etc., that need to be filled in correctly by the applicant. The applicant must also enter the loan amount and tenure (duration) according to their requirements.

Documents such as proof of identity, proof of address, and income proof also need to be submitted along with the application form. Most lenders provide the facility of filling out the application form online. However, you can also visit the bank or financing firm personally and submit the application form and required documents directly.

The following documents are to be submitted with the used car loan application form:

  • Any one of the Proof of Identity (PoI) documents such as PAN card (mandatory), plus one ID proof such as Aadhaar, passport, driving licence or voter ID, Aadhaar Card, Passport, or Driving Licence can be submitted to the bank/financier.
  • Any one of the Proof of Address (PoA) documents such as Aadhaar Card, Aadhaar, passport, driving licence, voter ID, or a utility bill not older than 2 months must also be submitted along with the application form.
  • Photographs (if asked; many lenders now use digital KYC) must also be submitted along with the application form.
  • Documents that confirm the salary or income of the applicant, such as salary slips, bank statements, etc., are also required to confirm the repayment ability of the applicant.
  • Car documents, such as a copy of the RC, a valid insurance policy, the valuation or inspection report, and the seller’s details, are also required.

If any of these documents are pending, the loan approval procedure might get delayed. The applicant must also enter the correct details in the application form to avoid any last-minute hassles or loan rejection.

Loan Processing

After receiving the loan application, the bank/financier will process it and go through the submitted documents carefully. The credit score of the applicant is also checked during this process. A score of 750+ gets the best terms. Below 700, banks may reject the application, while NBFCs may approve it at a higher interest rate. Loan approval. The NBFCs (non-banking financial companies) might still approve the loan application, but the interest rate will be higher in this case.

Also, the loan amount and tenure are decided based on the applicant’s profile. If the bank or financier considers the applicant’s profile higher-risk, they might provide a shorter loan duration or a lesser loan amount might be approved. The interest rate also decided based on the applicant’s credit score and profile.  So, the applicant compares offers and negotiates before accepting the sanction for a used car loan in India.

Usually, salaried employees, especially those working in leading corporate firms, get better loan interest rates than self-employed individuals. So, it is quite evident that the applicant’s profile is not just evaluated on the basis of their credit score, but their entire profile, including their employment status, employer’s name, and other details, plays a significant role in the used car loan approval.

The applicant’s loan history and pending EMIs also get evaluated before granting the loan approval. If all these things are good, the loan application gets quick approval. Any pending documents or details can extend the loan approval time.

Loan Approval

Once all these steps are completed successfully, the used car loan application will get approved. If the bank or financier is not satisfied with the documents or details provided by the applicant, they might require it to fulfil them or reapply for the loan. Depending upon how well the applicant responds to the document verification and other loan procedures, he full process, from application to disbursal, usually takes 3–7 working days.

Once the loan gets sanctioned, the bank or financier will complete some formalities such as signing the loan agreement and setting up a NACH e-mandate for EMIs (some lenders also take security cheques) from the applicant. The NACH or ECS mandate will also be set on the applicant’s account during this step.  The loan amount will be disbursed directly to the car dealer’s account, so you can take delivery of the car without any hassles after loan approval.

Summary

A car loan on a used vehicle can get approved within 24 hours, but the complete process from application to disbursal of the loan amount from the chosen lender usually takes 3-7 working days. Pre-approved loans get processed fastest because the interest rates and eligibility are already pre-decided. In case of other loan types, the lender evaluates you for eligibility (based on age, income, employment status and credit score), collects your KYC documents, proof of income and car documents, evaluates the car, and approves the amount along with tenure and interest rates. A good credit score (750+), complete documentation and a car that fits in the age criteria of the lender expedite the loan approval process. You have to sign the sanction letter and mandate NACH once the loan gets approved. The money gets transferred to the seller’s account and the hypothecation is done on the RC by the lender.

FAQs about Used Car Loan Approval

  1. Q. How long does it take to get a used car loan approved in India?

Many lenders offer approval of a used car loan within 24 hours. The whole procedure, including verification of the documents, valuation of the car, signing of the agreement, and release of money, takes 3-7 working days. Meanwhile, pre-approved loans take 24-48 hours to get disbursed.

  2. Q. What documents are needed for a used car loan?

Your PAN card, an ID proof and address proof like Aadhaar, passport, driving licence or voter ID, and income proof are mandatory to apply for a used car loan. If you are a salaried person, submitting salary slips and bank statements for verification is mandatory, and if you are self-employed, the banks ask for ITR and business proof. The documents needed for the car include a duplicate of the RC, the insurance and the valuation report.

  3. Q. What credit score do I need for a used car loan?

Your credit score needs to be 750 or above as a score of 750 and above gets approved faster and offers the best deals. A low credit score, less than 700, can get rejected from the bank’s side but NBFCs can approve it with a high rate of interest.

  4. Q. How much of a used car’s price will a lender finance?

A lender finances nearly 70-90% of the car’s valued cost, not the asking price. The final amount depends on various factors like the car’s age, its condition, and your profile. You have to pay the rest of the amount as a down payment.

  5. Q. Why might a used car loan take longer than expected?

Your application can take a long time to get approved if you have submitted incomplete or incorrect documents, have a low credit score, have a huge number of EMIs, the car is old according to the lender’s guidelines, or the car’s valuation or RC is delayed.

  6. Q. Who receives the loan amount for a used car?

The lender directly transfers the amount to the seller or dealer’s account, not the borrower’s account. When you transfer the RC to the lender’s name, the hypothecation of your RC is visible, and it remains visible till you clear all the dues and get the bank’s NOC.
