Maruti Suzuki Brezza

Maruti’s contender in the compact SUV segment, the Brezza, perpetually remains in high demand and is one of the best-selling compact SUVs. While the Brezza is abreast of segment standards in terms of comfort and features, what benefits it the most is its long-standing reputation and Maruti’s trust factor. Despite the arrival of Maruti’s new compact SUV, the Fronx, the Brezza is still as popular as ever and a permanent member of this list. Last month, the Brezza sold 17,336 units, growing its sales by 35 percent over the sales it did in the corresponding month in 2023.
Maruti offers the Brezza with a 1.5-litre petrol engine that comes paired with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed torque converter automatic. Moreover, with the mild-hybrid tech standard in all variants, the Brezza returns a mileage of 17.38 – 19.8 km/l. Like most Maruti cars, the Brezza is available in CNG variants that return a mileage of 25.51 km/kg.
Maruti Suzuki Wagon R

When it comes to cars, every buyer first prefers a tried and trusted product and the Maruti Wagon R with a revered decades-long legacy becomes one of the go-to options. The oldest Maruti car, Wagon R has long been lauded as a practical car to drive through city traffic thanks to its boxy silhouette, easy handling, and fuel-efficient powertrains. With such calibre, the Maruti Wagon R is a popular choice among urban buyers as well as commercial fleet operators, and every month it emerges as one of the best-selling cars in India. Last month, with sales of 17,303 units, the Wagon R became the second-best-selling car, and saw a staggering 102 percent growth over the 8,578 units it sold during December 2023.
Maruti has equipped the Wagon R with two petrol engines: a 1-litre petrol engine and a 1.2-litre petrol engine. While both engines are coupled with either a five-speed manual or a five-speed AMT, an optional CNG kit is also available with the 1-litre engine, which comes with only manual Transmission. The Maruti Wagon R delivers a mileage of 25.19 km/l from petrol and 34.05 km/kg from CNG.
Maruti Suzuki Dzire

While the sedan segment is ailing with most sedans unable to cross five thousand units in monthly sales, the Maruti Dzire consistently features among the top-selling cars. Such is Maruti Suzuki’s grasp of Indian needs. Last month, the Dzire once again outsold many top-selling SUVs and hatchbacks, registering an 18 percent rise in year-on-year sales as it sold 16,573 units. Proven as an attractive mix of qualities such as comfort, easy handling, and lucrative fuel efficiency, the Dzire rises high above the competition with its reputation as a veteran and being a popular choice among cab companies. Moreover, since the Dzire is the sedan derivative of the Maruti Swift, a new Dzire is expected to hit the market this year as Maruti has already launched the new Swift.
Currently, the Dzire is equipped with a 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol engine mated to either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed AMT. Moreover, it is also available in CNG variants that deliver a mileage of 31.12 km/kg, while the petrol mileage stands at 22.41 – 22.61 km/l.
Maruti Suzuki Ertiga

In the MUV category, the Maruti Ertiga is the most popular name in India after Toyota Innova. While the arrival of Kia Carens initially impacted its performance, the Maruti Ertiga has managed to recapture its territory and is contributing to healthy business for the number one carmaker. As per the latest record, the sales of 16,056 units in December 2024 helped Maruti Ertiga see a 24 percent uptick in its year-on-year performance. Such sales prove that the Ertiga is still the first choice of buyers looking for a 7-seater family car, which is high on comfort and delivers pocket-friendly mileage.
Powering the Ertiga is a 1.5-litre petrol engine mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic. As far as mileage is concerned, the Ertiga delivers up to 20.3 km/l from petrol and 26.11 km/kg from CNG.
Tata Punch

Tata Punch has been a great hit in India, leading a glorious streak since day one in the market. While its revolutionising success drew tough competition in the form of the Maruti Fronx and Hyundai Exter, the Punch is still unbeatable by both of them and has established itself as the best-selling Tata car. This time around, Punch sold 15,073 units, gaining a 9 percent year-on-year growth. While the head-turning macho appeal of the Punch makes it look bigger than it is, its formidable body makes it one of the safest cars in India. Meanwhile, on the inside, the Indian compact SUV simulates the ambience of larger SUVs. Meanwhile, the Punch has a broader reach as compared to its rivals, because it’s available in petrol-powered, and CNG-powered variants, and then there is the Tata Punch EV which is the most value-for-money EV under Rs. 15 lakh.
The ICE variants come with a 1.2-litre petrol engine paired with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed AMT. While the CNG variants deliver a mileage of up to 26.99 km/kg, the EV variants are available with a 25 kWh battery and a 35 kWh battery that offer claimed ranges of up to 315 km and 421 km, respectively.
Tata Nexon

Following the Tata Punch, the Tata Nexon raked in sales of 13,536 units in December 2024, seeing an 11 percent year-on-year drop. Nonetheless, this drop is far from defining the quality of Tata Nexon, which is one of the blockbuster cars of all time. Its arrival in 2017 powered the revival of the Indian carmaker and established it as one of the market leaders. While its eye-catching design gives it an attractive road presence, the Nexon packs a big punch with segment-leading ride comfort, exciting performance, and all modern-day features expected of a compact SUV. However, what puts the cherry on the cake is its 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating, which ensures formidable passenger safety and makes it one of the safest cars in India.
In terms of mechanicals, the Nexon has a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine and a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine. Both engines come paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed AMT. Moreover, there is an optional 6-speed DCT automatic mated to the turbo petrol engine. The Tata Nexon is also available in CNG-powered variants which deliver a mileage of 24 km/kg, while the Tata Nexon EV comes with two battery packs. The 30 kWh battery pack offers a range of 325 km while the 40.5 kWh battery pack offers a range of 465 km.
Hyundai Creta

For eight years and counting, Creta has been the face of modern mid-size SUVs in India. Its grand success attracted many carmakers and is part of the reason why this is the most in-demand segment in India. As the best-selling Hyundai car and the best-selling mid-size SUV, Creta is a brand in itself. Last month, the Creta once again was the only Hyundai car to feature on this list. It sold 12,608 units, which helped it grow its year-on-year performance by 36 percent. Competing in the most crowded segment, the Creta comes in as the most attractive overall package for its refined engines, premium cabin, and a host of upmarket features.
The Hyundai Creta comes with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol, a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine, and a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine. The NA engine and diesel engine are offered with a six-speed manual as standard while there is an option of a six-speed CVT automatic for the NA engine and a torque converter automatic for the diesel engine. Meanwhile, the 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine comes with a 7-speed DCT automatic.
Mahindra Scorpio

One of the longest-running and most iconic cars in India, Mahindra Scorpio is one of a kind. Moreover, it is living proof that while comfort-oriented SUVs are in high demand, many buyers still put their money on conventionally designed, sturdy and durable SUVs. The undying love for Scorpio drove Mahindra to expand its line-up a couple of years ago. Today Mahindra sells two SUVs under the Scorpio badge. One is the evergreen Scorpio Classic and the other is the even more capable Scorpio N, which turned out to be a ground-breaking success. Last month, both Scorpio Classic and Scorpio N collectively sold 12,195 units, gaining a 7 percent year-on-year growth.
As far as engines are concerned, the Scorpio Classic comes with a 2.2-litre diesel engine paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. Meanwhile, the Scorpio N is powered by the same 2-litre diesel engine in two different tunes and a 2-litre turbo petrol engine. A 6-speed manual gearbox comes as standard, while the more powerful diesel engine and the petrol engine also get the option of a 6-speed torque converter automatic.
Maruti Suzuki Eeco

The most affordable MUV in India, Maruti Eeco is the most special car on this list and essential for the Indian market. Used primarily for business needs, the Maruti Eeco is the go-to car for a wide variety of commercial tasks such as ambulance services, public transportation, and cargo delivery. The Maruti Eeco has successfully handled these businesses for more than ten years, making itself one of the best-selling cars. In December 2024, the Maruti Eeco made an appearance on the list with sales of 11,768 units, which translated into a 16% year-over-year growth.
The Maruti Eeco is available in both 5- and 7-seater configurations and comes equipped with a 1.2-litre petrol engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. In terms of mileage, the Eeco delivers 19.71 km/l from petrol and 26.78 km/kg from CNG.
Maruti Suzuki Fronx

Maruti Fronx – a compact SUV spawned from the iconic Maruti Baleno has seen tremendous success in India. Combining the success formula of the Baleno with the coveted SUV body type, the Fronx instantly connected with the masses after its launch last year. Today, the Fronx is selling well enough to be called one of the best-selling cars in India, and last month it grabbed a spot among the top ten by selling 10,752 units and registering an 11 percent year-on-year growth. Based on the Baleno, the Fronx carries similar interiors, features, and even most design elements. Moreover, its price does not differ much from that of the Baleno especially in lower variants, making it an extremely appealing Maruti compact SUV.
Maruti has equipped Fronx with a 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol engine and a 1.0-litre turbocharged Boosterjet petrol engine. A 5-speed manual gearbox comes with both engines, while there is a 5-speed AMT for NA engine and a 6-speed AT for turbo engine. Like most Maruti cars, the Fronx is also available in CNG variants that come with a 5-speed manual transmission and deliver a mileage of 28.51 km/kg.
