July 10, 2024

While the popularity of SUVs is reaching new highs every month, not everyone who aspires to own a big SUV ends up buying one. This is exactly what made compact SUVs find success in India. Due to compact city-friendly dimensions, nearly as many features as those in big SUVs, and affordable prices, compact SUVs fit into the urban lifestyle better than mid-size and full-size SUVs. Every month, we witness thousands of buyers choose compact SUVs over any other body type and so was the case in June 2024. Here are the top selling compact SUVs in India of June 2024.

Tata Punch

Spinny Assured Tata Punch Kaziranga

While both Nexon and Punch have been radically successful, the popularity of the Tata Punch has burgeoned in recent months. Today, the Punch is not only the best-selling Tata car but also consistently emerging as one of the three best-selling cars. This time around, the Punch sold 18,238 units, gaining a 66 percent year-on-year growth, and taking the throne of the best-selling car. When it was launched in 2021, a car of its type was not in the picture, but its earth-shattering success drove Maruti and Hyundai to jump into the relatively new segment with Fronx and Exter respectively. Nonetheless, the Punch is still leading the segment as a value-for-money package and one of the safest cars.

What adds to Punch’s appeal is its versatility as it is available in petrol-powered, CNG-powered, and electric-powered variants. The ICE variants come with a 1.2-litre petrol engine paired with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed AMT. While the CNG variants deliver a mileage of up to 26.99 km/kg, the EV variants are available with a 25 kWh battery and a 35 kWh battery that offer claimed ranges of up to 315 km and 421 km, respectively.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza

Spinny Assured Maruti Suzuki Brezza

Last month, Maruti Brezza clocked sales of 13,172 units, attaining a 25 percent year-on-year growth and beating its arch-rival, Tata Nexon for the fifth time on the trot. The Maruti Brezza has been one of the most dominant players in the compact SUV segment for a long time. With premium interiors, a good wealth of features, and Maruti’s ace card – frugal and reliable drive, the Maruti Brezza meets most needs of urban car buyers. All this along with the trust factor that comes with Maruti cars, has established the Brezza as one of the best-selling cars in India.

Powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine mated to either a five-speed manual or a six-speed torque converter automatic, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza delivers a mileage of 17.38 from manual variants and 19.8 km/l from the automatic variants since the automatic variants benefit from the mild-hybrid technology. Moreover, Maruti also offers Brezza in CNG variants that deliver 25.51 km/kg of mileage.

Tata Nexon

Spinny 2024 Tata Nexon

Selling 12,066 units in June 2024, Tata Nexon saw a 13 percent drop in its year-on-year sales. Even though Tata Nexon’s popularity has seen a considerable dip in recent times, its sales cannot be called poor by any stretch of the imagination. With over 7 lakh units sold so far, the Indian compact SUV has been the greatest force behind Tata’s resurgence and establishment as one of the leading carmakers in India. While the stylish design Nexon is a head turner, it substantiates the segment-best ride comfort and the reassurance of great passenger safety thanks to the 5-star Global NCAP safety rating. Moreover, since it is available in petrol, diesel, and EV variants, the Nexon can be owned in a variety of forms.

In terms of mechanicals, the Nexon is available with a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine and a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine. Both engines come paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed AMT. Moreover, there is an optional 6-speed DCT automatic mated to the turbo petrol engine. The Tata Nexon EV comes with two battery packs. The 30 kWh battery pack offers a range of 325 km while the 40.5 kWh battery pack offers a range of 465 km.

Hyundai Venue

Hyundai Venue

The first Korean car on the list, Hyundai Venue is a consistent player in its segment. Being the younger sibling of the Hyundai Creta, the Venue sits at a more accessible price point and thereby makes for a great deal as a premium Hyundai compact SUV. The main attraction of the Venue lies in its upmarket features and the refined powertrains that make it deliver a premium experience as one expects of a Hyundai car. Continuing its steady performance in June 2024, Hyundai Venue sold 9,890 units, positioning itself at the fourth spot on the list, despite a 15 percent year-on-year decline in sales.

To suit most preferences, the Hyundai Venue comes with multiple powertrain options. A 1.2-litre petrol engine comes paired with a 5-speed manual, a 1-litre turbo-petrol engine comes paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox or an optional 7-speed DCT (dual-clutch automatic) and a 1.5-litre diesel engine comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Kia Sonet

Kia Sonet

The Kia Sonet sold 9,816 units in June 2024, which grew its year-on-year sales by 27 percent. Kia’s compact SUV has been in the game for nearly four years and has carved a substantial space for itself. Like its sibling, the Sonet is known for its attractive wealth of features and refined powertrains that make it deliver a premium experience. Earlier this year, the Sonet received its first facelift which has given it some cosmetic tweaks while the chief highlight is the addition of the Level-1 ADAS features that have upped its safety quotient.

Powering the Kia Sonet are a 1.2-litre NA petrol engine, a 1.5-litre diesel engine, and a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine. For transmission options, a 6-speed iMT is available with the turbo-petrol engine and the diesel engine, however, the diesel engine gets a 6-speed manual gearbox. For automatic transmission options, a 7-speed DCT automatic and a 6-speed torque converter automatic are offered with the turbo-petrol engine and the diesel engine respectively.

Maruti Suzuki Fronx

Spinny Maruti Suzuki Fronx

Maruti Fronx, which competes with Hyundai Exter and Tata Punch, has been on song since say one in the market. This Indo-Japanese compact SUV was quick to climb onto the list of best-selling cars and is seemingly on the way to becoming one of the most successful Maruti cars. The previous month, Fronx sold 9,688 units, gaining a 21 percent year-on-year growth. Based on the iconic Baleno, the Fronx carries similar interiors, features, and even most design elements. Moreover, its price does not differ much from that of the Baleno especially in lower variants, making it an extremely appealing Maruti compact SUV.

Maruti has equipped Fronx with a 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol engine and a 1.0-litre turbocharged Boosterjet petrol engine. A 5-speed manual gearbox comes with both engines, while there is a 5-speed AMT for NA engine and a 6-speed AT for turbo engine. Like most Maruti cars, the Fronx is also available in CNG variants that come with a 5-speed manual transmission and deliver a mileage of 28.51 km/kg.

Mahindra XUV 3XO

Mahindra XUV 3XO

In the compact SUV segment, Mahindra recently levelled up its game with the launch of the Mahindra XUV 3XO which essentially is the facelifted Mahindra XUV300. If the new name and design were not enough to augment its appeal, Mahindra equipped the compact SUV with a Level-2 ADAS safety suite, rocking the market. This step from the Indian carmaker not only spiked the sales of its compact SUV but also upped the standards of the segment. In June 2024, the XUV 3XO sold 8,500 units, growing its year-on-year sales by 67 percent.

The new Mahindra XUV 3XO carries forward its engines. It is equipped with a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine, a 1.2-litre direct injection turbo-petrol, and a 1.5-litre diesel engine. All three engines come mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard, while there is a 6-speed torque converter automatic unit for both petrol engines and a 6-speed AMT for the diesel engine.

Hyundai Exter

Hyundai Exter

Hyundai’s most affordable SUV, the Exter has been engineered with a similar approach as that of the Maruti Fronx i.e. a hatchback turned into a compact SUV. As the Fronx is based on the Baleno, the Exter is based on the Grand i10 Nios. Notably, the formula has worked well for the Korean carmaker as the Exter has been well-received as a capable Hyundai SUV. Month after month, the Exter is pulling substantial volumes and last month it sold 6,908 units, coming ahead of some veterans in the segment. While the tall-boy body makes the Exter an appealing car especially for tall adults, being a Hyundai car, the Exter packs a host of upmarket features.

Sharing its underpinnings with the Grand i10 Nios and the Aura, the Exter is powered by the same 1.2-litre NA petrol engine mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 5-speed AMT. On the mileage front, the Exter delivers up to 19 km/l from petrol and 27.1 km/kg from CNG.

Mahindra Thar

Spinny Assured Mahindra Thar

While Mahindra Thar is the age-old king of off-roading, through the decades it has become a style statement especially due to its macho aura. Specially, for this reason, Mahindra rolled out the rear-wheel-drive variant of the Thar, catering to urban buyers who do not need the 4×4 system for their urban commutes. All the same, the serious off-roading capabilities that the four-wheel-drive Mahindra Thar offers at affordable prices are still a worry for all off-roader manufacturers. With an illustrious legacy and unmatchable calibre, the Mahindra Thar is the best-selling off-roading car in India and never misses featuring on this list. In June 2024, the Thar sold 5,736 units, gaining a 38 percent growth over the 3,899 units sold during the same period in 2023.

The four-wheel-drive variants of the Thar come with a 2-litre turbo-petrol engine and a 2.2-litre diesel engine. Both engines come mated to either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic. Whereas, the RWD models come with a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox.
