BMW rolls out X1 Long Wheelbase (LWB) in India at an introductory price of Rs 49.90 lakh (ex-showroom). The new model offers an extended wheelbase and additional rear seat space compared to the previous version. The X1 LWB is completely built in India at BMW Group Plant Chennai and comes with a petrol engine.
The X1 LWB targets premium SUV buyers, offering comfortable and roomy interiors along with an extensive list of standard equipment. The new model also retains the BMW X1’s elegant style and dynamic performance.
BMW X1 LWB Price and Positioning
The BMW X1 LWB has arrived in India with an introductory price of ₹49.90 lakh, ex-showroom. It has been developed and produced in India for the Indian market and is available through BMW’s dealer network.
In essence, the X1 LWB is a space-optimised version of the standard X1 with the elongated wheelbase primarily aimed at providing more rear-seat room. However, the petrol variant of the X1 LWB is cheaper than its standard-wheelbase counterpart, and it is an interesting proposition for those desiring more space within a premium small SUV.
BMW X1 LWB Design and Dimensions
The largest changeover involves the vehicle proportions since the new X1 LWB is 4616 mm long, 2104 mm wide, and 1641 mm tall, which makes it 2800 mm from wheel to wheel. BMW claims that the X1 LWB is the longest in its class, and they also admit that they have gone for this solution to provide greater comfort inside the cabin.
The X1 LWB retains the brand’s signature kidney grille but also introduces adaptive LED headlights with cornering function and High Beam Assistant. The side view has dynamic lines, roof rails in Aluminium look and square wheel arches, whereas the M light-alloy wheels with 18 inches diameter give a sporty look to the X1 LWB. On the back side, the BMW X1 LWB has 3D LED lights at the end of the lamp units and a wide diffuser.
More Rear-Seat Space
The extended wheelbase is the main reason to consider the X1 LWB over the standard model. BMW has focused heavily on rear-seat comfort, making the SUV more suitable for families and buyers who frequently travel with passengers in the second row.
The rear seats can recline by up to 28.5 degrees, while the longer body provides additional room for passengers. The SUV also offers a 540-litre boot, which can be expanded to as much as 1,700 litres by folding the rear seats.
This makes the X1 LWB more practical for long-distance travel, especially for buyers who regularly carry both passengers and luggage.

BMW X1 LWB Engine and Performance
The BMW X1 LWB is powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder TwinPower Turbo petrol engine. It produces 156hp and 230Nm of torque, with peak torque available from 1,500rpm to 4,600rpm. The engine is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and sends power to the front wheels.

The suspension has also been specially tuned for the Indian market, with a focus on providing a smoother ride over uneven and patchy roads. This should make the X1 LWB suitable for both city use and longer highway journeys.

BMW X1 LWB Rivals
The BMW X1 LWB sits in the premium compact SUV space and will compete with models such as the Mercedes-Benz GLA and Audi Q3. Its extended wheelbase gives it a different focus, particularly for buyers who value rear-seat space.
Unlike many compact luxury SUVs that primarily focus on a sporty driving experience, the X1 LWB puts greater emphasis on passenger comfort and practicality without giving up BMW’s performance-oriented character.

BMW X1 LWB: Verdict
While the X1 LWB adds much-needed space and comfort without stretching the X1 into a different breed of vehicle, the increased wheelbase gives it a larger cabin for rear-seat passengers, and the generous boot space along with the versatile seating arrangements make it an equally competent family haulier and a comfortable daily driver.
With its premium feel, modern comforts, and locally produced petrol engine, the X1 LWB at ₹49.90 lakh introductory price offers a compelling choice for luxury SUV buyers seeking something more focused on rear-seat passengers. The added space in the X1 LWB will undoubtedly appeal to people who often travel with their families.
