Tata Punch is one of the best-selling compact SUVs in the Indian car market now. Recently, the Tata Punch facelift models have been released and are doing quite well in the market. These models come in both Naturally Aspirated (NA) or turbo petrol engine options and the 1.2-litre petrol + CNG option is also available. While the NA petrol and CNG models come with both automatic and manual transmission options, the turbo petrol variants are paired only with the 6-speed manual transmission.

Kia Sonet has been one of the best selling SUVs from Kia. It comes with the 1.2-litre Na engine, 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine, and 1.5-litre diesel engine. The NA petrol models of Kia Sonet come with only the 5-speed manual transmission whereas the turbo petrol variants are either paired with the 6-speed iMT or 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). Let’s now see how these cars compare against each other when it comes to real-world fuel-efficiency.

Tata Punch vs Kia Sonet: ARAI Mileage Figures

ARAI stands for Automotive Research Association of India which is an independent organisation that conducts mileage tests for all the vehicles in India. The claimed ARAI mileage of a vehicle is always greater than its real-world mileage because ARAI conducts these tests in a controlled manner in ideal driving conditions with minimum load. Now, let’s see how Punch and Sonet stand against each other when it comes to ARAI mileage figures:

Engine & TransmissionFuel TypeTata Punch – ARAI Mileage (km/l)Kia Sonet – ARAI Mileage (km/l)

1.5-litre Diesel MTDiesel –24.1 km/l
1.5-litre Diesel ATDiesel –18.60 km/l

It’s quite difficult to compare the ARAI mileage figures of Tata Punch and Kia Sonet cars directly because of their diverse engine options. While Tata Punch clearly leads the space with better overall mileage figures, it doesn’t have the diesel engine which Sonet has.

The turbo petrol variants of Punch claim a higher mileage than the turbo petrol models of Sonet. However, Punch is only available with a manual transmission when it comes to turbo petrol models, whereas Sonet offers two automatic transmission options in the form of iMT and DCT. The direct comparison of the ARAI mileage figures is only possible with the NA petrol with manual transmission where Punch claims a slightly better mileage than Sonet. Here, Punch offers both manual and automatic transmission options whereas the NA engine of Sonet is paired only with a manual transmission.

Summary: The ARAI claimed mileage figures of Punch are quite higher than the ARAI claimed mileage figures of Sonet.

The ARAI claimed mileage figures often do not translate to real-world mileage figures because the real mileage varies as per your driving style, variant, and road conditions. So, let’s compare Tata Punch vs Kia Sonet on the basis of their real-world mileage figures now:

That said, the real-world mileage figures of Sonet (in both NA petrol and turbo petrol variants) are almost identical to the real-world mileage figures offered by Punch’s petrol variants.
