While the MG Windsor has many attractive characteristics, a key one is that it can be bought under a BaaS scheme, which substantially reduces its upfront cost. However, its more expensive sibling, the MG ZS EV, is also available with BaaS. Therefore, someone looking to buy an MG Windsor EV with BaaS can also consider the MG ZS EV, at some additional cost. To make the choice simpler, here is a price comparison between the MG Windsor EV BaaS and MG ZS EV BaaS that evaluates their ownership costs and shows which is more economical.

MG Windsor EV Quick Overview

MG Windsor EV BaaS

The MG Windsor EV has won over buyers with a unique and attractive package. First, its CUV (Crossover Utility Vehicle) design maximises cabin space. In fact, in terms of space for 5 occupants, the Windsor EV is the most spacious car under Rs. 20 lakh. Moreover, MG has loaded the Windsor with premium amenities, including a sofa-like rear seat with a 135-degree recline angle, which helps it offer a business-class experience. All this comes with a practical driving range (claimed 332 – 449 km) for urban driving.

The standard price of the Windsor EV is Rs. 14.10 – 18.60 lakh (ex-showroom). At the same time, its BaaS price is Rs. 9.99 lakh + Rs. 3.9/km to Rs. 13.60 lakh + Rs. 4.5/km.

MG ZS EV Quick Overview

MG ZS EV

The MG ZS EV has been around since 2020. While customers have not received the ZS EV well, it is a worthy electric SUV with a long list of upmarket features, a decent driving range of 461 km (claimed) for city use, and a rich interior that makes it feel a class above. Essentially, the ZS EV is the electrified version of the MG Astor and shares most of its components with it. The electric mid-size SUV is offered with a sole 50.3 kWh battery pack.

The MG ZS EV is priced at Rs. 17.99 – 20.75 lakh (ex-showroom). Its BaaS price is Rs. 13–15.51 lakh + Rs. 4.5/km.

Price Comparison of MG Windsor EV and MG ZS EV

For this comparison, we will use only base variant prices of both electric cars.

 MG Windsor EVMG ZS EV
Standard Base Variant PriceRs. 14.10 lakhRs. 17.99 lakh
BaaS PriceRs. 9.99 lakhRs. 13 lakh
Battery Subscription CostRs. 3.9/kmRs. 4.5/km
Battery PriceRs. 4.31 lakhRs. 4.99 lakh

The MG Windsor EV base variant, Excite, which is powered by a 38-kWh battery, has a standard ex-showroom price of Rs. 14.10 lakh. Meanwhile, in BaaS schemes, the Windsor Excite variant costs Rs. 9.99 lakh, with a battery subscription priced at Rs. 3.9 per kilometre.

The MG ZS EV base variant, Executive, which is offered with a 50.3 kWh battery pack, costs Rs. 17.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Whereas, under the BaaS scheme, the ZS EV Executive costs Rs. 13 lakh with a battery subscription cost of Rs. 4.5 per kilometre.

MG charges a minimum monthly charge for 1,500 km, which is more like a battery EMI. So, the battery EMI for the Windsor EV will be Rs. Rs. 3.9 X 1,500 = Rs. 5,850, and for the ZS EV will be Rs. 4.5 X 1,500 = Rs. 6,750.

Note: The battery subscription price is essentially the per-kilometre running cost, as reflected in the battery EMI. In simpler terms, the per-kilometre price is the battery EMI divided by a set number of kilometres, which varies by BaaS provider and is considered the minimum monthly running distance for their electric car.

Cost of Ownership Comparison: MG Windsor EV BaaS vs MG ZS EV BaaS

Case A – MG Windsor EV (Base Excite variant) with BaaS

Upfront cost: Rs. 9.99 lakh

Down payment (20%): 20 % of Rs. 9.99 lakh = Rs. 1,99,800

Loan amount: Rs. 7,99,200

Monthly EMI on 9% interest in a 5-year loan tenure: Rs. 16,590

Charging cost

  • The average domestic tariff for electricity is Rs. 8 per unit (kWh).
  • Charging a 38-kWh battery pack requires about 41 units (assuming minor transmission losses), for Rs. 328.
  • Given the MG Windsor EV 38 kWh battery’s claimed driving range of 332 km and real-world driving range, it will take around 5 full charging cycles to cover 1,500 km.
  • Monthly electricity usage cost for 1,500 km will be around 5 X Rs. 328 = Rs. 1,640

Minimum monthly charge or Battery EMI: Rs. 3.9 X 1,500 = Rs. 5,850

Note: The minimum monthly charge may vary depending on the battery loan you get.

Total monthly expenditure: Rs. 5,850 + Rs. 1,640 + Rs. 16,590 = 24,080

Total yearly expenditure: Rs. 24,080 X 12 = Rs. 2,88,960 + maintenance cost

5 years’ expenditure: Rs. 2,88,960 X 5 = Rs. 14,44,800 + maintenance cost

5 years ownership cost: Rs. 1,99,800 + Rs. 14,44,800 = Rs. 16,44,600 + maintenance cost

Now, if you do not finance the vehicle:

Total monthly expenditure: Rs. 5,850 + Rs. 1,640 = 7,490

Total yearly expenditure: Rs. 7,490 X 12 = Rs. 89,880 + maintenance cost

5 years’ expenditure: Rs. 89,880 X 5 = Rs. 4,49,400 + maintenance cost

5 years ownership cost: Rs. 9,99,000 + Rs. 4,49,400 = Rs. 14,48,400 + maintenance cost

Case B – MG ZS EV (Base Executive variant) with BaaS

Upfront cost: Rs. 13 lakh

Down payment (20%): 20 % of Rs. 13 lakh = Rs. 2,60,000

Loan amount: Rs. 10,40,000

Monthly EMI on 9% interest in a 5-year loan tenure: Rs. 21,589

Charging cost

  • The average domestic tariff for electricity is Rs. 8 per unit (kWh).
  • Charging a 50.3-kWh battery pack requires about 53 units (assuming minor transmission losses), for Rs. 424.
  • Given the MG ZS EV 50.3 kWh battery’s claimed driving range of 461 km and real-world driving range, it will take around 4 full charging cycles to cover 1,500 km.
  • Monthly electricity usage cost for 1,500 km will be around 4 X Rs. 424 = Rs. 1,696

Minimum monthly charge or Battery EMI: Rs. 4.5 X 1,500 = Rs. 6,750

Note: The minimum monthly charge may vary depending on the battery loan you get.

Total monthly expenditure: Rs. 6,750 + Rs. 1,696 + Rs. 21,589 = 30,035

Total yearly expenditure: Rs. 30,035 X 12 = Rs. 3,60,420 + maintenance cost

5 years’ expenditure: Rs. 3,60,420 X 5 = Rs. 18,02,100 + maintenance cost

5 years ownership cost: Rs. 18,02,100 + Rs. 2,60,000 = Rs. 20,62,100 + maintenance cost

Now, if you do not finance the vehicle:

Total monthly expenditure: Rs. 6,750 + Rs. 1,696 = 8,446

Total yearly expenditure: Rs. 8,446 X 12 = Rs. 1,01,352 + maintenance cost

5 years’ expenditure: Rs. 1,01,352 X 5 = Rs. 5,06,760 + maintenance cost

5 years ownership cost: Rs. 13,00,000 + Rs. 5,06,760 = Rs. 18,06,760 + maintenance cost

Difference between costs of ownership of MG Windsor EV Excite with BaaS and MG ZS EV Executive with BaaS = Rs. 20,60,100 – Rs. 16,44,600 = Rs. 4,17,500

Therefore, over 5 years of ownership of base variants, an MG Windsor EV with BaaS will prove to be over Rs. 4 lakh more affordable than the MG ZS EV with BaaS.

Final Thoughts

Clearly, the MG Windsor EV with BaaS is more affordable and a practical choice than the MG ZS EV. All the same, the ZS EV has some advantages, such as a more traditional SUV design rather than the Windsor’s CUV design, and a more powerful electric motor that delivers exciting performance.
