Tata Punch

Spinny Tata Punch
Tata Punch

For the past few months, Tata Punch has remained among the top three selling cars and often grabbed the top spot. Last month, the Punch once again grabbed the title of the best-selling car.  Raking up 18,238 units in June 2024, the Punch grew its sales by 66 percent over its sales in the same month the year before. While it has always been one of the best-selling cars, its popularity has risen in recent times, especially after the launch of the Tata Punch EV which is showing promise to become the best-selling EV in India. While the electric avatar is a recent addition, the Punch was already available in petrol-powered and CNG-powered variants, meeting diverse fuel-type requirements. Some other factors that base the Punch’s popularity are its macho appeal, taller seating, interiors that replicate the ambience of Tata’s larger SUVs, and a 5-star G-NCAP rating that makes it one of the safest cars in India.

As mentioned, the Punch is available in petrol-powered, CNG-powered, and electric-powered avatars. The ICE variants are equipped with a 1.2-litre petrol engine paired with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed AMT. The Tata Punch EV is available with a 25 kWh battery and a 35 kWh battery that offer ranges of 315 km and 421 km, respectively.

Maruti Suzuki Swift

New Maruti Swift

Collecting sales of 16,422 units, the iconic Maruti Swift took the second spot on this list in June 2024. While this was a 3 percent year-on-year growth in its sales, the hatchback has regained its dominance after the recent launch of its latest generation. The new Swift brings a sportier design, retaining all its desirable attributes such as the segment’s most spacious cabin, family-friendly character, and an enthusiastic alter-ego which most driving enthusiasts love. Nonetheless, Maruti has equipped Swift with a new engine which has made it even more fuel efficient, adding to its economical appeal.

The new Maruti Swift is equipped with an all-new 1.2-litre three-cylinder Z12E petrol engine while the earlier model offered a 1.2-litre 4-cylinder K-series petrol engine. Moreover, the new Swift can deliver a mileage of 25.75 km/l with a 5-speed AMT and 24.8 km/l with a manual gearbox.

Hyundai Creta

The mass-favourite Korean SUV, Hyundai Creta once again outsold every rival with sales of 16,293 units in June 2024. With this, Creta retained the title of the best-selling mid-size SUV and gained a 13 percent year-on-year growth. Since it hit the market in 2015, the Creta has been leading the most popular segment in the Indian automobile market. Even today, it is the most value-for-money package in the segment as the Korean SUV strikes the right balance between spacious, premium interiors, and a long list of premium features that has been stretched even further with the recent facelift.

Like the earlier model, the new Creta offers a 1.5-litre NA petrol engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and an iVT automatic transmission and a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed torque converter automatic. However, Hyundai has added the 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine paired with a 7-speed DCT automatic. This engine is also available with the Kia Seltos, Kia Carens, Hyundai Alcazar, and Hyundai Verna.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga

Spinny Assured Maruti Suzuki Ertiga

In June 2024, the Maruti Ertiga sold 15,902 units and registered a staggering 89 percent growth over the 8,422 units it sold in June 2023. Sales-wise, the Maruti Ertiga is the best MUV in India and over the years it has built a tried-and-trusted reputation. With ample space for 7 occupants, reliable underpinnings, and a frugal powertrain, the Ertiga comfortably meets most needs of an average MUV buyer in India and pulls substantially more buyers than each of its rivals every month. Moreover, the Ertiga also benefits from offering the CNG variants that do great business for the cab companies.

Powering the Ertiga is a 1.5-litre petrol engine with mild hybrid technology. The transmission options available consist of a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed automatic transmission. In terms of mileage, the Ertiga runs 20.51 km/l on petrol and 26.11 km/kg on CNG.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno

Spinny Assured Maruti Suzuki Baleno

With sales of 14,895 units in June 2024, the Maruti Baleno is the best-selling premium hatchback yet again and saw a 6 percent year-on-year growth. Moreover, it is once again the only premium hatchback among the top 10-selling cars. Since it launched in 2015, it has sold over 12 lakh units and is recognised as one of the most successful Maruti cars. What makes the Baleno a hot choice is its spacious and feature-rich cabin that offers a premium passenger experience, and frugal powertrains that make it one of the most fuel-efficient cars in India.

Sharing its engine with the Maruti Swift, the Baleno features the same 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol engine mated to either a 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT and is also available in CNG-powered variants. As far as mileage is concerned, the Baleno delivers 22.94 km/l from petrol and 30.61 km/kg from CNG.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R

Spinny Assured Maruti WagonR

One of the revered veterans of the game, Maruti Wagon R clocked sales of 13,790 units in June 2024, continuing its run as one of the best-selling cars. While this translated into a 21 percent year-on-year drop, it just shows how high are the standards of this popular hatchback as far as sales are concerned. Due to an epic legacy that largely defined the hatchback segment, the Wagon R is one of the most tried and trusted cars and a popular choice for most urban buyers as well as commercial fleet operators. Easy drivability, practical design, fuel-efficient powertrains, and multiple other characteristics come together to make the Wagon R an ideal hatchback for Indian conditions.

Maruti has equipped the Wagon R with two petrol engines: a 1-litre petrol engine and a 1.2-litre petrol engine. While both engines are coupled with either a five-speed manual or a five-speed AMT, an optional CNG kit is also available with the 1-litre engine which comes with only manual Transmission. The Maruti Wagon R delivers a mileage of 25.19 km/l from petrol and 34.05 km/kg from CNG.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire

Spinny Assured Maruti Dzire Blue

The Maruti Dzire is the best-selling sedan and the only sedan to feature on this list. Last month, with sales of 13,421 units, the Dzire saw an impressive 44 percent growth in year-on-year performance, once again outselling many top-selling SUVs and compact SUVs. In competition with the likes of the Honda Amaze, Hyundai Aura, and Tata Tigor, the Maruti Dzire offers a great deal of comfort, easy handling, and lucrative fuel efficiency making itself an ideal compact sedan for city roads. And this is why, like its sibling Wagon R, the Dzire is a popular choice of cab companies.

Sharing a lot with the Swift, the Dzire features the same interiors, cabin space, and even the same 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol engine mated to either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed AMT. Moreover, the Maruti Dzire is also available in CNG variants that deliver a mileage of 31.12 km/kg, while the petrol mileage stands at 22.41 – 22.61 km/l.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza

Spinny Assured Maruti Suzuki Brezza

For a considerable while now, Maruti Brezza has been consistently beating its arch-rival, Tata Nexon. Last month, the Indo-Japanese SUV continued this streak by selling 13,172 units, gaining 25 percent year-on-year growth. While the Brezza is abreast of segment standards in terms of comfort and features, what benefits it the most is the reputation it has built over the years and Maruti’s trust factor. While some of its toughest rivals, Tata Nexon and Kia Sonet have received facelifts in recent years, the Brezza is as popular as it always was.

Maruti offers Brezza with a 1.5-litre petrol engine that comes paired with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed torque converter automatic. Moreover, with the mild-hybrid tech standard in all variants, the Brezza returns a mileage of 17.38 – 19.8 km/l. Like most Maruti cars, the Brezza is available in CNG variants that return a mileage of 25.51 km/kg.

Mahindra Scorpio

Spinny Assured Scorpio N

While the Mahindra Scorpio has always been one of the top performers in the SUV segment, it has been one of the top 10 selling cars for significant duration now. Of the two Scorpio models, the older one, Scorpio Classic has been Mahindra’s second best-selling car of all time and has etched its name among the most iconic cars in India. Meanwhile, the new Scorpio N has been a groundbreaking success from day one. In June 2024, both Scorpio Classic and Scorpio N together sold 12,307 units and saw a 42 percent growth over the 8,648 units they sold during the same month in 2023.

Mahindra offers the 7- & 9-seater Scorpio Classic with a 2.2-litre diesel engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, while the 6- & 7-seater Scorpio N is powered by a 2-litre turbo petrol engine and a 2.2-litre diesel engine. Both its engines come coupled with a 6-speed manual transmission and a 6-speed torque converter automatic, while the top diesel variants also get a four-wheel-drive system.

Tata Nexon

Spinny 2024 Tata Nexon

After its absence on this list in the last couple of months, Tata Nexon managed to break into the top 10 in June 2024. The Indian compact SUV sold 12,066 units and saw a 13 percent drop in its year-on-year sales. While the Nexon is not at the peak of its popularity, it cannot be overlooked that this is the car that turned the fortunes for the Indian carmaker much before the Tata Punch arrived. With an appealing design, segment-leading ride comfort, and exciting performance, the Nexon delivers a fascinating value for its price and this is what keeps it strong amidst the ever-rising competition. What makes its offering even more appealing is a 5-star G-NCAP-rated strong structure that infuses passengers with an inexplicable confidence. As far as sales are concerned, the Tata Nexon has emerged as the best-selling car in India multiple times and has remained a permanent member of this list for a long time.

In terms of mechanicals, the Nexon is available with a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine and a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine. Both engines come paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed AMT. Moreover, there is an optional 6-speed DCT automatic mated to the turbo petrol engine. The Tata Nexon EV comes with two battery packs.
