What are the types of driving licenses in Delhi?

In short, there are two types of driving licenses available in Delhi for various classes of vehicles. One is the learner license which is a temporary license  issued to learn driving of motor vehicles and is valid upto six months period. After expiry of one month, applicants become eligible for a permanent license, up to six months from the date of issuing the driving license. 

Driving license is issued in Delhi based on the following vehicle type:

  • Motorcycle without gear: category includes mopeds and scooters
  • Motorcycle with gear: Includes all other motor cycles having gear
  • Light Motor Vehicle: Hatchback/sedans etc.
  • Transport Vehicles: Trucks, vans, buses etc.

How to apply for a driving license online in Delhi?

Applicants have to follow the particular steps in order to obtain a driving license in Delhi:

  • Visit the Delhi RTO website and click on ‘Driver Licence Related Services’ to redirect to Sarathi portal.
  • Select ‘Delhi’ from the state list and click on  “Apply for learner’s license”.
  • Fill in the application, upload documents and submit the fee.
  • Take the test on the scheduled date to receive Learner’s license.
  • Now, you can visit the Sarathi platform again and click on “Apply for DL” under the option “Holding Learner’s Licence”.
  • Choose a preferred slot after 30 days for a driver’s test conducted by the RTO.
  • Pay the DL insurance fees online and download confirmation slip.
  • Visit the selected Delhi RTO on the scheduled day for the driving test.

What is the eligibility to apply for a driving license in Delhi?

To apply for a driving license in Delhi, an applicant has to follow the below eligibility criteria:

  • The applicant should at least be 18 years or above.
  • The applicant should first have a learner’s license.
  • The applicant should apply for a driver’s license after 30 days and within 180 days from the date of issuance of the learner’s license.
  • Applicants should be aware of all the traffic rules and regulations.

What are the documents required to apply for a driving license online in Delhi?

  • Form no.4 i.e the driver application form
  • Passport size photographs
  • Application fee of Rs. 400
  • Driving certificate form- 5, 14 and 15, in case of transport vehicles
  • Address Proof: Any one of either ration card, voter’s ID, certified copy of voter’s list, Passport, LIC policy bond that is 6 months old.
  • Age Proof: Any one of either birth certificate, education certificate, attested copy of the passport, or certificate issued by the employer if you work for a state/central government.

How can I check my driving license status in Delhi?

Following are the steps to check the DL status online:
Visit parivahan.gov.in
Click on ‘Driving Licence Related Services’ under the ‘Online Services’ tab.
Select the concerned state from the drop-down menu.
Click on the “Application Status” tab present at the top right.
Enter the details required like “Application Number”, “Date of Birth” and “Captcha”.
Click on “Submit”.
Once you submit the information, you will see the status of your driving license application.

How to apply for a driving license after a learner license in Delhi?

Along with a Learners’ Licence gained for this type of vehicle, a Form 4 application for a permanent driving license must be submitted. The applicant is qualified to take the test of competence if they have held a valid learner’s license for at least 30 days.

You should visit the RTO office on the date of the driving test 30 days after you’ve received the learner’s license. The test will be conducted in the presence of a Motor Vehicle Inspector. If the Motor Vehicle Inspector is satisfied with the performance, you will be sent for the biometrics. After this, a permanent Driving Licence will be issued.

Can I get a learner’s license online in Delhi?

Yes, applying for a learner’s license in Delhi can be done either through the online portals or offline through the RTO office closest to you. For anyone to obtain a permanent driving license, they must have a valid learner’s license issued by the Delhi Regional Transport Office. The minimum age to apply for a learner’s license is 18 years in Delhi as per the regulations set by the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988.

What is the educational qualification required to apply for a driving license in Delhi?

At the moment, there is no minimum educational qualification needed to get a driving license.

The Delhi transport ministry launched faceless transport services which meant many transport services such as learner’s license tests, vehicle registration went completely online. You can now apply for an online learner’s test from the comfort of your home.

Just visit transport.delhi.gov.in and apply for a DL/RC/Permit related service, upload your documents and pay the fee online. Authentication by Aadhar is used to verify the documents and e-sign.
