As India’s second-largest carmaker, Hyundai enjoys a special place in the market. A name that has been instrumental in the evolution of the Indian automobile industry, Hyundai has over the years offered some of the most memorable cars, including cult classics such as the Santro. Despite the highs and lows of the industry, Hyundai cars have always received immense love from the consumers which is evident from the sales chart, where cars like the Hyundai Creta and the Verna, are often seen leading their respective segments.

Both the Creta as well as the Verna are two of Hyundai’s jewels that offer a complete package and great value for money, which makes them both popular choices in their segment. And now that the Verna has arrived with its sixth generation and the Creta already ruling the charts with its second generation, both cars have an unignorable appeal. The most exciting thing about the two is the fact that they are placed in the same price bracket. So for a buyer that has the right budget, the choice between choosing one amongst the two can be quite confusing. This is why we have brought to you a cross-segment head-on comparison of the Hyundai Verna against the Creta.

As far as the dimension goes, it will all come down to the preferred choice of the segment, as both cars offer the best in their respective segment. The Hyundai Creta being an SUV offers a bodyline that is taller and offers better ground clearance, which comes in handy when the roads get tough. On the other hand, the Verna being a sedan offers the advantage of a bigger boot, longer wheelbase and better cabin space, along with a longer and wider stance. These are classic sedan traits and are inclined towards offering a comfortable journey. Nonetheless, what’s common to both the cars is a spacious cabin, big boot, and assertive road presence.

The petrol powertrain comparison is where things get interesting between the two cars. Now that the Creta is no more offered with its turbo petrol engine, there is only a 1.5 litre naturally aspirated petrol engine on offer. The fun part, however, is the fact that the same engine is also offered on the Hyundai Verna, with the same power and torque figures but with better mileage considering that the Verna is a lighter vehicle. The mileage advantage of the 1.5 litre NA petrol on the Verna is about 2 to 2.5 km/l higher as compared to what the Creta affords to achieve owing to its size and weight. This gives an edge to the Hyundai Verna, for those who are looking to bring home a naturally aspirated petrol car that offers a good mileage, no matter what the segment is.

Another thing that works in favour of the Hyundai Verna is the fact that the sedan even offers a sporty 1.5 litre turbocharged petrol engine tastefully mated to a 7-speed DCT automatic that does not compromise with the mileage which is as high as 20.6 kmpl. This engine is what gives the Verna an edge over the Hyundai Creta as well as other competitors in its segment. Therefore, considering the present scenario where the future of diesel engines is uncertain and where the Hyundai Creta still does not offer a turbo petrol engine, the choice is clear for the enthusiasts, and it is the Hyundai Verna.

But when it comes to diesel powertrain, the Hyundai Creta scores a lone victory, since the Hyundai Verna does not come with a diesel engine onboard. With that said, the Creta’s 1.5-litre diesel unit is one of the best engines out in the market considering that several good options are now axed owing to the Phase II of BS6 norms.

The head-on comparison above proves why both the Hyundai Verna as well as the Creta are two of the most popular choices in their respective segments. Both cars come well equipped with several premium features such as a touch infotainment system, cruise control, climate control and much more.

However, despite offering quite a lot, when pitched against each other, the Hyundai Verna shines well, with features such as type C power sockets, ventilated seats with both heat and cool functions, and a smart electric trunk. The Hyundai Creta on the other hand offers a large panoramic sunroof, a 60:40 rear seat split, rear and premium Arkamys sound system onboard lower trims as well. Considering the offerings however, the Hyundai Verna seems like a better pick for the price considering it is one of Hyundai’s latest launches for the Indian market.

Top variants also offer additional safety features such as TPMS, auto headlamps, rear disc brakes etc.

Even though both cars offer a similar set of safety features, the Hyundai Verna shines yet again with its ADAS Level 2 offerings that are reserved for the top trims and bring onboard safety features such as forward collision warning, blind spot warning, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, driver attention warning and much more.

When it comes to the price comparison, the Hyundai Verna comes with a six variant lineup that includes the EX, S, SX, SX(O), SX Turbo and SX Turbo (O). On the other hand, the Hyundai Creta’s variant lineup is spread across eight trims that include the E, EX, S, S+ Knight, SX Executive, SX, SX (O), and SX (O) Knight.

Thus, the Hyundai Creta offers more variants than the Hyundai Verna, thereby providing more choices within each variant spectrum. However, an important thing to note here is that to enjoy the most out of the SUV, one would have to opt for the upper-mid and top trims that start from Rs. 13.96 Lakh and go all the way up to Rs. 19.20 Lakh.

On the other hand, when it comes to the Hyundai Verna, the sedan despite having a limited variant spread offers a lot more in every trim. When pitched against the Creta, each of Verna’s variant spectrum are not only relatively cheaper but also offers better features for the same price. For instance, if one opts to enjoy the best out of the Hyundai Verna, then the top-end variants start at Rs. 15.99 Lakhs and go all the way up to Rs. 17.38 Lakhs. This means that even if you chose to go with the top-end trims of the Verna, you would still save anywhere between Rs. 1.55 to 1.82 lakh.

Hyundai Verna vs Hyundai Creta: Summary

Be it the Hyundai Verna or the Hyundai Creta, both cars offer an irresistible package that has the perfect balance of features, comfort, performance and value. While the Hyundai Creta comes as a solid SUV that is topped with ample features and a refined powertrain, the Hyundai Verna on the other hand plays it well in terms of comfort, features and practicality.

While in terms of dimension, the choice is more or less based on the segment preference, when it comes to the powertrain, the Verna offers two extremely capable and peppy petrol engines, one of which is offered on the Creta as well. In terms of diesel powertrain, the Creta emerges as the sole winner, since the Verna misses out on a diesel engine. Nonetheless, both cars are very well-equipped in terms of onboard features and offer a lot to enjoy in every trim. The price however is another factor that plays well for the Hyundai Verna, which shines with its limited variant lineup that is cheaper than what the Hyundai Creta offers. With that said, the Creta however offers a better trim choice for the price.
