How Much Car Can You Afford? Loan Amount vs. Your Budget

An affordable automobile is one with a down payment, monthly EMI, and operating costs that fit into your financial landscape while allowing for reserves for savings and unforeseen expenses. That sounds straightforward until you start browsing. A slightly newer model catches your eye. Then an automatic. Suddenly, stretching the EMI by a few thousand rupees feels reasonable.

However, when you think of making a larger outlay than budgeted for, ask yourself seriously how much the increased payment translates to in a monthly commitment. Here at Spinny, we assist you in getting the financing service you need for the second-hand car that you want to buy. Knowing your limits should make it easier for you to choose the vehicle and the loan.

Your loan eligibility and your budget answer different questions

Loan eligibility tells you how much a lender may be willing to offer. Your personal budget tells you how much you can repay comfortably. Loan providers always evaluate your annual income, existing loans, credit history, and the car in need of financing. However, financial obligations are not constrained to items listed in the application form, such as helping out your parents or moving to another place soon.

Suppose you qualify for a ₹7 lakh loan, but a ₹4 lakh loan already covers a suitable car after your down payment. There is no need to borrow the additional amount simply because it is available.Treat eligibility as one limit. Set your own limit using your actual expenses and priorities.

Start with the money you take home

Use the amount that reaches your account after deductions, rather than your annual CTC. A salary package can include components you cannot spend every month. If your earnings differ from month to month, it’s best to take a conservative estimate based on the last few months of earnings, considering any slow months. Remember that your business revenue doesn’t mean that you take that money home as profit; you have to account for your business expenses and taxes first.

Don’t create an EMI payment based on expected bonuses, expected increments in salary, or a particularly good sales month. Your monthly contribution to your savings account should be supported by your regular income.

Work backwards to a comfortable EMI

Before opening an EMI calculator, list what your income already needs to cover:

  • Household essentials, including rent, groceries, utilities and family support.
  • Existing EMIs and credit repayments.
  • Savings towards important goals and annual expenses.
  • A monthly buffer for expenses that vary.
  • The car’s running and ownership costs.

What remains gives you a starting point for your car EMI. You can choose to spend less than this amount.

Here is an illustrative monthly budget:

Budget itemMonthly amount
Take-home income₹80,000
Household essentials₹32,000
Existing debt repayments₹8,000
Planned savings and annual expenses₹12,000
General buffer₹8,000
Available for total car expenses₹20,000
Estimated car costs excluding EMI₹8,000
Remaining EMI allowance₹12,000

These are just examples, not recommended ratios. Two individuals with a monthly paycheck of ₹80,000 can have completely different and acceptable EMIs.

If the calculation leaves very little room, consider a cheaper car, a larger down payment that preserves your emergency fund, or more time to save.

Put running costs into the calculation

An EMI is predictable. Fuel bills, insurance renewals and maintenance still need a place in your budget.

The monthly budget of ₹8,000 can include provision of ₹4,500 for fuel, ₹1,250 for the insurance, ₹1,250 for servicing and repairs, and ₹1,000 for tolls/parking. These are just assumptions regarding expenditures and are not actual figures for a car.

Build your own figures using your driving distance, realistic mileage, local fuel prices and insurance quotes. Our service cost calculator can also help you estimate scheduled servicing costs.

Some expenses are periodic/irregular, so to pay for them, one can save money regularly. Therefore, it is necessary to put money aside (but not include it in the budget more than once) and use it for its intended purpose only when paying all the bills.

Also consider what the car replaces. If you will spend less on cabs or public transport, adjust your budget for the transport costs that genuinely disappear. Keep any travel expenses that will continue.

Turn your EMI allowance into a car price range

Once you have an EMI limit, use the interest rate and tenure to estimate a loan amount. Then add the down payment you can safely make.

The example states that a monthly EMI of ₹12,000 can help with a loan amount of around ₹4.39 lakh for a duration of 48 months if we take into consideration an estimated 14% annual interest rate on a reducing-balance basis; chances are that it will exclude additional charges. Add a ₹1.5 lakh down payment and the estimated car-price ceiling becomes about ₹5.89 lakh. This assumes the down payment is available after setting aside emergency savings and other upfront costs.

However, taking the example forward, one does not need to purchase only the maximum amount. For instance, how about going for a vehicle worth ₹5.5 lakh with the same down payment? In that case, the total amount that will need to be borrowed will be ₹4 lakh, and the rest of the amount can be financed through an EMI of just ₹10,931 per month for the same interest rate and tenure.

These calculations are planning examples, not loan offers. Your approved amount, rate and available tenure depend on the lender’s assessment and the car you choose. Recalculate using the actual offer before making a decision.

A longer tenure changes more than the EMI

A longer repayment period has the effect of making monthly expenses for car ownership seem much lower. The drawback of this type of car finance method is prolonged interest payment.

Consider a ₹4 lakh loan at an illustrative 14% annual reducing-balance rate:

Loan tenureApproximate EMIApproximate total interest
36 months₹13,671₹92,158
48 months₹10,931₹1,24,668
60 months₹9,307₹1,58,438

Calculations exclude fees and assume the rate stays unchanged. Totals use unrounded EMIs, so multiplying the rounded figures may produce small differences. The five-year option reduces the EMI by about ₹4,364 compared with three years, but adds roughly ₹66,280 in interest.

While a long financing period is an affordable option when it comes to keeping the monthly budget intact, it would always be wise to compare the costs of this option with the costs of obtaining a less expensive car. Additionally, it is imperative to calculate whether the financing period would be aligned with the least expected time of possession of a car.

Choose a down payment without emptying your savings

A larger down payment reduces the loan amount and, at the same rate and tenure, the interest payable. But using every available rupee upfront can leave you vulnerable to the next unexpected bill. The smart approach would be to allocate separate amounts for the car purchase process, upcoming personal commitments and saving for emergencies. All of these amounts should be included in the down payment.

Check the final purchase and loan breakdown for insurance, processing fees, applicable taxes on charges and any other payable items. At Spinny, RC transfer charges are included in the listed used car price, so avoid budgeting for that same charge twice.

Selected buyers might be able to secure funding of up to the full price of the vehicle through Spinny financing depending on the lender provider and personal credit standing. Although full funding does imply that all costs are taken care of, it is important to understand that taking out loans implies repayment of funds.

Compare the full loan offer

Once you receive an offer, look beyond the monthly instalment. Review the interest rate, whether it is fixed or floating, fees, repayment schedule and total amount payable.

Go through the lender’s Key Facts Statement, which will give you an idea of the Annual Percentage Rate, or APR, of the lender, which includes interest plus credit charges so that you get a clearer picture of the borrowing costs than the normal interest rate.

Check prepayment conditions and late-payment charges too. If charges are added to the loan, they increase the principal you repay. If they are payable upfront or deducted from disbursement, understand how much cash you will need at purchase.

Do not prematurely assume that the expensive loan can be financed in the future or paid off early. Ensure that you can harness the existing terms of the deal.

Give the budget a trial run

Before buying, try setting aside the expected EMI and additional car expenses for a month or two. Account for transport spending the car would replace so the exercise reflects your likely future budget.

Check whether you will be able to save enough money, pay the bills and successfully perform any costly week without having to rely on the credit card bill. Then test a less comfortable month: lower freelance income, higher fuel spending or a family expense. If everything depends on perfect conditions, reduce the car budget before signing.

While making any comparisons on cars, one needs to take into account the ownership costs involved in the different models. For one, similar purchase prices may hide big differences in insurance premiums, tyre expenses and the level of servicing required. Take into account the journeys you take frequently as well as the features you will actually use.

Plan your used car purchase with Spinny

Start by browsing cars within the price range you have calculated. Use our EMI calculator to compare loan amounts and tenures, then check your eligibility online. Spinny’s initial eligibility check does not affect your credit score; a formal lender application may involve a credit enquiry.

The financing process, along with the documents required, can be understood with the help of our team. The lender will finally approve your loan and decide its terms after reviewing the proposal. Keep in mind that complete insurance is required while financing your used car loan via Spinny.

The right purchase should fit your daily life and your finances. A car you enjoy driving feels even better when its monthly costs leave you comfortable.

FAQs

  1. Q. How much of my salary should go towards a car EMI?

There is no percentage that suits everyone. Start with take-home income, deduct essentials, debt repayments, savings and car running costs, then set an EMI that leaves a buffer.

  2. Q. Should I borrow the maximum amount I qualify for?

Only if it fits your needs and budget. Approval reflects the lender’s assessment, while your comfortable borrowing limit also depends on personal goals and expenses.

  3. Q. How do I calculate my affordable car price?

Estimate a loan from your comfortable EMI, interest rate and tenure. Add your available down payment, keeping money aside for emergency savings and other upfront costs.

  4. Q. Is a longer loan tenure better for my budget?

It lowers the EMI for the same loan and rate, but usually increases total interest. Compare the monthly relief with the extra borrowing cost.

  5. Q. Can I get a used car with zero down payment?

Eligible Spinny buyers may qualify for up to 100% financing of the car’s price. Availability depends on assessment, and other expenses may still require upfront payment.

  6. Q. What costs should I budget for besides the EMI?

Include fuel or charging, insurance, servicing, repairs, tyres, parking and tolls as applicable. Also check the purchase breakdown and loan charges before paying.

  7. Q. Can I count an expected salary increase when budgeting?

It is safer to base regular repayments on income you already receive reliably. Reassess your budget once the increase has actually taken effect.

  8. Q. Does a good CIBIL score make a bigger loan affordable?

A good score may improve your financing options, but it does not increase the money left after monthly expenses. Judge affordability using your cash flow and actual loan offer.
