How to Clear a Challan In India?
A challan or e-Challan in India can be cleared through the following ways:
- You can clear a challan on the spot after the traffic personnel issues a challan. After clearing the challan in cash or UPI, you must collect the payment receipt from the traffic inspector.
- You can also visit your nearest RTO or traffic court to clear the pending challan or e-Challan issued against your vehicle.
- Online sites such as Parivahan, Spinny, etc. can also be used to settle traffic challans online. You only have to enter your vehicle number and view the pending challans against your vehicle first. If you find the challan to be legitimate, you can pay using credit card, debit card, UPI, or net banking.
- Court challans can be settled only by visiting the Magistrate Court on the stipulated date and time. Mostly cash payments are allowed in a court but some courts may also offer the option of UPI payments.

- Contest a Challan
If you have been issued a challan wrongly, you can raise a complaint against it using the Parivahan e-Challan site. After visiting this site, you can enter your challan number and raise a complaint against it by providing the required details. You can also describe your issue and add evidence (photographic or videographic) to prove your innocence. Once your complaint is resolved, the challan gets automatically cancelled.
- Visit Lok Adalat
Lok Adalat is an informal court set up by the state or national transport authorities. It presents an opportunity to settle the pending challan against your vehicle at once. Find out about upcoming Lok Adalat details such as date, time, and location using the official site of National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).
Attend this court session with your vehicle documents and ID proofs. Request them to cancel your challan or provide a discount against it. Usually, the challan for first time offenders is waived off. If multiple challans are issued against your vehicle, you may even get a concession or discount against them if you are willing to settle all of them in the court itself.
