Tata Harrier is a bulky mid-size SUV that was first launched in 2019 and currently comes with 1.5-litre Turbo-Petrol (Hyperion) and a 2.0-Litre Kryotec Diesel engine. Mahindra Scorpio N is another boxy mid-size SUV that was introduced in 2022 as the upgraded version of Scorpio classic. The 2.2-Litre mHawk Turbo-Diesel and 2.0-Litre mStallion Turbo-Petrol engine options are available with the all new Mahindra Scorpio N. Both these cars are immensely popular among the car enthusiasts because of their dominating road presence, power-packed performance, and modern features. Scorpio N is also among the most sold SUVs in India right now. With a mileage of up to 15.94 km/l, the diesel manual variants of Scorpio N offer the highest mileage in its lineup. The diesel variants of Tata Harrier offer the highest mileage of up to 16.8 km/l in its lineup.

In this blog, we will talk about how the real world mileage of these cars vary from their claimed mileage and how they stand against each other. Tata Harrier EV is also available for the buyers but we will not be comparing this car as it is available as a fully electric SUV.

Mahindra Scorpio N is not only heavier than Tata Harrier but it also comes with a bigger petrol and diesel engine that generate more power and torque. Also, Scorpio N cars are equipped with either RWD or 4WD drivetrain which add additional weight and friction to their driving dynamics. These things force the engine to work more to keep the car moving. All these factors reduce the mileage of Scorpio N, especially if we compare it to the Tata Harrier models that appear similar in size. Harrier has a more aerodynamic design and its lesser kerb weight along with smaller engine size leads to a better fuel-economy irrespective of the road conditions.

Tata Harrier vs Mahindra Scorpio N: ARAI Mileage Figures

ARAI mileage tests are done in a lab-controlled manner in ideal driving conditions and with a minimum load in the car. These factors enable the vehicles to achieve a higher score during the ARAI tests whereas the real-world mileage depends on the road conditions, driving style, and other factors. As a result, ARAI mileage figures tend to exceed the real-world fuel-economy of cars. The below table gives the comparison of ARAI mileage figures of Tata Harrier vs Mahindra Scorpio N for each powertrain:

Engine & TransmissionFuel TypeTata Harrier – ARAI Mileage (km/l)Mahindra Scorpio N – ARAI Mileage (km/l)

The above table suggests that the petrol engine of Tata Harrier delivers more mileage than its diesel engine. However, in the real-world conditions, the diesel engine proves to be more fuel-efficient. The ARAI claimed mileage of Mahindra Scorpio N variants are also less than Tata Harrier cars irrespective of the fuel-type.
