The Mahindra Bolero is a rugged, no-frills SUV that has been a mainstay of Indian roads for more than a quarter of a century. It is constructed on a strong body-on-frame chassis and is reputed to be reliable and strong both in the city and in rugged rural areas.

With its latest 2025 update, Bolero continues its classic utilitarian DNA, but adds a few contemporary comfort options. What many buyers would like to know, however, is the performance of this utilitarian workhorse in terms of crash safety.

Keep reading to learn about any official NCAP safety ratings for the Bolero (if available) and the key active and passive safety features it offers, so you can judge how well it can protect occupants on the road.

Mahindra Bolero NCAP Safety Rating

As of early 2026, Global NCAP and Bharat NCAP have not crash-tested the standard Bolero. In fact, the Bolero Neo was the only one tested, and it only received a low 1-star rating (adult and child).

Mahindra Bolero Safety Features

Despite the absence of an official NCAP rating, the Mahindra Bolero does include several basic safety features across its lineup. Many of these are standard on even the base variants. Highlights include:

  • Dual Front Airbags

Every variant of the Bolero is equipped with two airbags (driver and front passenger) as standard. These help in safeguarding passengers during frontal collisions, though no side or curtain airbags are provided.

  • ABS with EBD

All variants have an Anti-lock Braking System and Electronic Brake-force Distribution. ABS eliminates wheel lock-up during hard braking, and EBD is used to provide stable stops with proper distribution of the braking force.

  • Seatbelt Reminders

All models have an audible and visual seatbelt reminder system for the driver and front passenger. This encourages occupants to buckle up.

  • Reverse Parking Aid

All Bolero models have rear parking sensors. They also beep to notify the driver about the obstruction when in reverse.

  • Engine Immobiliser & Central Locking

The engine immobiliser prevents individuals from starting the car without the proper key. Additionally, the central locking feature adds convenience when you are leaving the vehicle parked or when you want to ensure that the doors are safely locked before speeding up.

  • Child Locks

All variants have manual child locks on the rear doors to prevent opening from inside.

Furthermore, all current Bolero variants share the core safety kit. The table below compares the safety features across B4, B6, B6(O) and B8:

Overall, the Bolero’s safety equipment list is basic. It has the mandated minimums (dual airbags, ABS, seatbelt warnings) but few modern aids. Notably absent are side/curtain airbags, ESC, and full ISOFIX support.

Summary

The safety of the Bolero depends on its rugged construction and standard safety features, and not on crash-test standards. The Bolero Neo is the only model that has been tested, scoring 1 star, but the standard Bolero has not been tested.

All models are equipped with the necessary safety features, such as dual airbags, ABS with EBD, seatbelt alert, and parking sensors, which help ensure a safe driving experience on urban roads.

The SUV, however, does not have advanced features such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC), curtain airbags, and ISOFIX anchors. Thus, it is good in terms of longevity and simple protection. However, safety-conscious buyers may want to wait till Mahindra adds better safety features or an NCAP rating is obtained.

FAQs about Mahindra Bolero Safety

  1. Q. Has the Mahindra Bolero been crash-tested by Global/Bharat NCAP?

No. Global NCAP and Bharat NCAP have not crash-tested the standard Bolero (B4/B6/B6(O)/B8). Bolero Neo was the only variant tested, and it obtained a low rating of 1 star. Therefore, no official NCAP safety scores are available on the regular Bolero.

  2. Q. What safety features are standard on all Bolero variants?

The standard safety features are two front airbags, ABS+EBD, rear parking sensors, a child safety lock, and an engine immobiliser. All models starting with B6 have central locking with a remote. None of the variants has ESC or traction control.

  3. Q. Which Bolero variants get central locking?

The base B4 does not have central door locking with a remote key. It is offered on the B6, B6(O) and B8 models, which makes it simpler to lock the vehicle.

  4. Q. Does the Bolero have advanced safety aids like ESC or ISOFIX?

No. In no variant does the Bolero have Electronic Stability Control, traction control, or ISOFIX child-seat anchors. Its safety features are only restricted to the essentials.

  5. Q. Is the Bolero safe for city and highway driving?

The rugged construction and simple safety equipment of the Bolero (airbags, ABS, etc.) ensure that the car is suitable for daily use in the city and on the highways. Nevertheless, it does not match newer competitors in occupant protection due to a lack of a formal crash-test rating or advanced safety features.
