Tata Motors has come a long way since its first car, the Indica. The Indian brand has drastically altered its image in the last decade by introducing models that could keep up with other brands and even beat them at their game. Tata took a fresh approach with their new cars, donning a bespoke design language, and engineering that incorporated safety as a priority. This strategy seems to have worked, with Tata becoming the second largest carmaker in India only to be behind Maruti Suzuki, known for its extensive portfolio of small cars, unlike Tata’s focused lineup.

In 2019, Tata introduced the Safari in a new variant known as the Dark Edition which featured an all-black, darked out cosmetic approach with some extra features. This variant was wholeheartedly welcomed by customers, prompting Tata to slowly roll out the same treatment to other models. Tata’s customers seem to love the idea of a stealth-looking vehicle mainly because it makes them stand out from all the run-of-the-mill Tata cars.

Today, the Dark Edition is an established lineup available for four models from Tata’s portfolio: Altroz, Nexon, Harrier, and Safari. Some of these models also come in a Red Black Edition which gets a splash of red along with the usual black treatment. Here’s how the Dark Edition models differ from standard variants and what makes them special:
