The Maruti Suzuki Baleno is the best-selling premium hatchback in India and has sold over 10 lakh units since its launch in 2015. Praised mainly for its family-friendly character and frugal powertrains, Maruti Baleno is enjoying enormous success and is among the most valued cars in the new as well as used car market. So, if you plan to sell your Maruti Baleno, here are some guidelines that will help you fetch the best resale value.

Factors Affecting Maruti Baleno Resale Value

Some key factors that are explained below largely affect the resale value of a Maruti Suzuki Baleno.

Condition

When a buyer visits to examine a car, the first thing he does is inspect the car carefully from every direction. How a used car looks and feels usually gives away a rough estimate of its resale value, and so is the case with a used Maruti Baleno. Ensure, your Baleno is free of any dents, abrasions, or blemishes, and that all the features are functioning well. Flaws in the looks and features can also prompt one to think that the car might have met accidents in the past, and while this could only be an assumption it could reduce the resale value by a great margin.

Odometer Reading

The odometer is a gauge installed in every car and it records every meter that the car covers in its lifetime. The odometer reading which means the total distance covered in any car’s lifetime is displayed on the instrument cluster of the car. Even before examining a used car, a buyer always wants to know its odometer reading and this has made it a culture to boldly mention the odometer reading in a used car advertisement. The higher the odometer reading, the lower the car’s resale value. Moreover, make sure you never indulge in odometer tampering, it can drop the resale value to throw-away prices and can also lead to a strong possibility your used Baleno never gets sold.

Number of owners

While Maruti cars benefit greatly from Maruti’s brand image, they can not escape the effect of ownership changes on their resale value. A car’s condition majorly depends on its usage, and since everyone treats their car in a different way, it is harder to form an idea about a car which has had multiple owners. This is why the more the number of owners a car changes, the lesser is its resale value. Generally, the first and second owners of a used Maruti Baleno fetch a higher resale value, as compared to the later owners.

Model popularity

The Maruti Baleno was launched in 2015 and became an overnight success. Maruti had equipped the first-gen Baleno with both petrol and diesel engines, giving the hatchback an edge in terms of versatility. The facelift in 2019 gave Baleno some visual updates, however, there were no mechanical changes. Maruti rolled out the second-gen Baleno in 2022, which was far more feature rich than its predecessor, however, is available with only a single engine option. The Maruti Baleno has always been an immensely popular car, however, the facelift and even more so, an all-new generation increases the resale value by a great margin.

Age

Age is something that sometimes surpasses the condition when it comes to evaluating the resale value of a car. Just like us, age has a deteriorating effect on cars, and the fresher a car the more value it possesses. For example, a 2016 model Maruti Baleno Alpha has a resale value of around Rs. 5.40 lakh, while the same variant of the 2017 model can fetch around Rs 6 lakh.

Accidental Status

Accidents are merciless monsters and eat a great deal of a car’s resale value. While minor accidents are almost unavoidable, major accidents can turn things upside down in getting a good deal for a used car. The resale value of a Baleno with a major accident in its past is 60 – 80% lower than the value of its non-accidental condition. Moreover, it’s relatively harder to sell Maruti cars that have undergone major accidents in the past.

Powertrains, Transmission, and Features

When launched in 2015, the Maruti Baleno came with a 1.2-litre petrol engine and 1.25-litre turbo diesel engine. Both engines were mated with a 5-speed manual gearbox, while the petrol engine also got the option of a CVT automatic. Maruti also launched a performance version, Maruti Baleno RS (Road Sport), which was equipped with a 1.0-litre three-cylinder direct injection Boosterjet turbocharged petrol engine that came mated with a 5-speed manual transmission only. This engine was so revered for its performance that Maruti decided to bring it again with a recent entrant Maruti Fronx. The facelift in 2019 did not change anything mechanically, however, the Baleno RS was discontinued in January 2020, and the diesel engine was discontinued in May 2020. The premium hatchback entered its second generation in 2022 and came equipped with the same and sole 1.2-litre petrol engine mated with a 5-speed manual gearbox and 5-speed AMT. Soon after, Maruti launched the CNG variants of Baleno that are capable of delivering a mileage of 30.61 km/kg.

Since the production of diesel-powered Maruti Baleno ended almost 3 years ago, they command a considerably lower resale value as compared to petrol-powered models. Moreover, in regions like Delhi, the scrappage for diesel cars is 10 years and 15 years for petrol cars, so in such areas, the resale value of a diesel Maruti Baleno is already lower than that of their petrol-powered counterparts.

Furthermore, it’s worth noting, the diesel-powered Maruti Baleno delivers better mileage than the petrol-powered model and this is sure to come in handy while negotiating when the car is being sold in areas where scrappages of diesel and petrol cars are the same.

Simultaneously, since automatic transmissions are costlier than manual transmissions, an automatic Maruti Baleno sells at a higher price than a manual Maruti Baleno. Also some buyers strongly prefer CVT automatic, leading the CVt cars to claim a higher resale value.

In terms of features, the second-generation Maruti Baleno is a significant improvement over its first generation. However, the first-gen Baleno is a decently feature-laden car and packs automatic climate control, projector headlamps, electric ORVMs, a touchscreen infotainment system, and others. In the second generation, Maruti added many features to Baleno’s package like a 360-degree camera, head-up display, and a larger 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system. On the safety front, the new Maruti Baleno comes with up to six airbags, ABS with EBD, an electronic stability program (ESP), hill-hold assist, ISOFIX anchorages, rear parking sensors, and more. Just like any other car, features add greatly to Baleno’s resale value, and more features simply means better resale value.

Expected Resale Value of Maruti Baleno

While a Maruti Baleno’s resale value largely depends on several factors explained above, here is the list of the expected resale value of the Maruti Baleno according to its model year. Do remember, these prices can vary concerning the vehicle’s overall condition.

Diesel

Best Time to sell your Maruti Baleno

A car loses 10% of its value as it drives out of the showroom and another 10% at one year of age. Then, with 10% cost depreciation every year, after 5 years the car is generally worth half of the original price paid for it. So, if you wish to claim a good resale value of Baleno, sell it within 5 years of its purchase. Moreover, do remember, a lesser driven car is always entitled to a greater resale value as many buyers take shine to a barely used car, for example, a 2020 model Maruti Baleno with around 20,000 km on its odometer can easily claim around Rs 6.70 lakh.
