The best coupe cars have always been fast, exhilarating, 2-door cars built to give the driver an engaging experience behind the wheel. They have been featured in all kinds of media; let that be James Bond’s iconic silver Aston Martin DB5 which he used for quite a few movies, or Brian O’Conner’s immortalised silver Nissan Skyline R34 and the orange Toyota Supra.

While the term coupe is used quite loosely nowadays, this blog will stay true to the 2 door cars with 2 rows of seats and a sloping roof. There are quite a few coupe’s available in India, some coming in the form of coupe crossovers while most staying true to the original definition.

That being said, here are 8 of the best coupes currently available in the Indian market.

BMW 2 series Gran Coupe

The BMW 2 series Gran Coupe is heavily inspired by the 8 series Gran Coupe. This design decision brought in a wider and a comparatively longer car in its segment, which makes the 2 series Gran Coupe more stable on the road as well as providing more room inside. Looking at the exterior, one can see the immense influence of the BMW 8 series Gran Coupe. It has a low and wide stance with a long sloping roofline that defines the coupe style to anyone looking at the car.

BMW 2 series Gran Coupe Key Specs:

  • Engine: 2.0 Litre
  • Power: 187 bhp (diesel), 189 bhp (petrol)
  • Transmission: 8-speed automatic (diesel), 7-speed automatic (petrol)
Fuel Efficiency: 14.82 kmpl (petrol), 18.64 kmpl (diesel)
  • Fuel Type: Petrol, Diesel
  • Seating Capacity: 5

Jaguar F-Type

Jaguar F Type

Ever since Tata’s purchase of Jaguar and Land Rover, all the three companies have been breaking the bank with each of their releases. Jaguar F-Type is no exception. Its drop dead gorgeous looks, coupled with its beautiful and ear pleasing V8 along with its driving characteristics have been highly praised. The F-Type is a driver-focused car, and at times it can feel as if the rear passengers were low on priority when it came to designing the car. The interior of the car does seem a little dated compared with other sports cars and there isn’t a lot of space for the passengers or luggage. But one shouldn’t complain on these aspects as it is a purely driver centric vehicle. One thing that’s for sure is the fact that you will always be with a smile whenever you drive this car.

Jaguar F-Type Key Specs:

  • Engine: 2.0 Litre Turbocharged, 5.0 Litre Supercharged V8
  • Power: 444 bhp (2L turbo) – 567 bhp (5L V8)
  • Transmission: 8-speed automatic
Fuel Efficiency: 9.4 kmpl- 12.3 kmpl
  • Fuel Type: Petrol
  • Seating Capacity: 2

Porsche 718 Cayman

Porsche never fails at creating some of the best driving mid-engined sports cars. The 718 Cayman is nothing short of an experience. Its powerful 2L turbocharged engine is a delight to drive and is a proper beast on the road. The 718’s handling is unmatched and its 7 speed automatic paddle shifters are a treat while on the road. The interior screams space and luxury and almost every aspect of this car can be customized to your liking. The 718 Cayman might be costly compared to the other cars on this list, but the costs are more than justified once you go behind the wheel.

Porsche 718 Cayman Key Specs:

  • Engine: 2.0 Litre Turbocharged
  • Power: 295 bhp
  • Transmission: 7-speed Automatic
    Fuel Efficiency: 14.5 kmpl
  • Fuel Type: Petrol
  • Seating Capacity: 2

Audi RS5 Sportback

Audi RS5 Sportback

On paper, the RS5 Sportback leans more towards the sedan side of things. It has 4 doors which makes it to be one of the very few family friendly coupes. However, Audi’s slogan still goes ‘Beauty with performance’ and so it is a car that is designed to delight the driver and not the passengers, so the rear seats are best only if you have teen kids.

The RS5 Sportback gets an aggressive yet graceful design due to its coupe design, while also being a mean racing machine on the road. This car is the perfect amalgamation of engineering and aesthetics, which makes you fall in love with it every time you drive it. It is a spacious and comfortable car on the inside, second to none when it comes to cars on this list. This car has it all: it is powerful, beautiful, and has functionality. It is a car that you can drive in, as well as a car you can ride in.

Audi RS5 Sportback Key Specs:

  • Engine: 3.0 Litre Turbocharged engine
  • Power: 444 bhp
  • Transmission: 8-speed automatic
  • Fuel Efficiency: 8.8 kmpl
  • Fuel Type: Petrol
  • Seating Capacity: 4

BMW M8

BMW M8

If any manufacturer knows how to make a luxurious sports car, it has to be BMW. Time and time again it has proven that fast cars can be comfortable too. The M8 is no exception, with enough space for the driver and 3 passengers, all the while decked out in premium leather seats and all the gadgets that are featured in other luxury cars. Comfort aside, the car is blisteringly fast, smoking even the Ferrari 488 Pista on the quarter mile. This is a car one can buy for racing around a track on weekends and picking up one’s children from school on the weekdays.

BMW M8 Key Specs:

  • Engine: 4.0 Litre Turbocharged engine
  • Power: 617 bhp
  • Transmission: 8-speed Manual
    Fuel Efficiency: 8.7 kmpl
  • Fuel Type: Petrol
  • Seating Capacity: 4

Aston Martin DB11

Aston Martin is an aspirational brand that is known for luxury, and is symbolised as a British car. The Aston Martin DB11 traces its predecessors in the DB3 and the DB5 from the 1950s to the mid 1960s. The current iteration is powered by a very rare twin turbo V12 screaming through every flat road and establishing its presence from miles away. The DB11, like all of its predecessors is a grand tourer, which means that you and 3 of your friends can enjoy scenic routes together and in a comfortable manner.

Aston Martin DB11 Key Specs:

  • Engine: 5.2 Litre V12 Turbocharged engine
  • Power: 630 bhp
  • Transmission: 8-speed Automatic
    Fuel Efficiency: 12.75 kmpl
  • Fuel Type: Petrol
  • Seating Capacity: 4

BMW M4

BMW M4

BMW just knows how to make a coupe. This list could have been a BMW-exclusive list, bu there were other worthy cars to consider.

The M4 is the souped up, beefier, high performance version of the regular 4 series, which is quite evident throughout its aggressive coupe stance. The power delivery is quite aggressive and the car seems like a wild beast, in a good way that is. The interior of the M4 is right up to the industry standards set by BMW themselves, making the ride comfortable for the passengers despite the firm suspension setup and the sharp steering of the vehicle.

BMW M4 Key Specs:

  • Engine: 3.0-litre Turbocharged
  • Power: up to 503 bhp
  • Transmission: 8-speed Automatic
    Fuel Efficiency: 10.75 kmpl
  • Fuel Type: Petrol
  • Seating Capacity: 5

Conclusion

If you want to buy a good authentic coupe style car in India, you have to be prepared to shell a decent amount of money. Comparing all the specs as well as user and critic reviews, the 2-series is one of the best options to go for. It is truly a bang for the buck. With amazing performance, elegant looks, and a good manufacturer after sales support.
