Since Hyundai announced that it will be offering six airbags as standard across the line-up, the most affordable option became the Grand i10 Nios, its entry level hatchback. 

Prior to this update, the top-spec Asta trim was the only version to be equipped with six airbags, while the others received four. Other safety tech on board consists of a reversing camera, electronic stability control (ESC), ISOFIX child seat mounts, and a tyre pressure monitoring system.

It also comes loaded with a horde of safety features which includes a dual dash cam unit, ESC, hill-hold assist and reversing camera.

The engine is smooth and refined, and the 83hp, 114 Nm, 1.2-litre petrol engine has enough pep to deal short bursts around the city. The Exter is available in five variants across nine colour options. At a mind-boggling starting price of Rs. 6.13lakhs, the Exter is a great option for car buyers who prioritise safety.

Along with the Grand i10 Nios, the Hyundai Aura – its sedan sibling – got the standard 6 airbag update recently. In early 2023, the Aura facelift only had four airbags as standard, while a total of six were available on the top variant alone.

Apart from the airbags, the sedan’s safety net includes parking assist, hill assist control (HAC), and an ESC (Electronic Stability Control) suite. In addition, the top end versions get some neat tech such as an 8-inch infotainment system, a wireless charger, and automatic climate control to name a few.

This has helped customers in acquiring the much-needed safety feature at a lower price and has helped boost sales. Additionally, the i20 is loaded to the brim with safety features such as hill assist control, reverse camera, and Electronic safety suite (ESS) amongst others. For those looking to up the ante, the premium variants get added features such as 7-speaker Bose music system, 10.25 inch touchscreen and sunroof.

The Hyundai Venue N Line also gets six airbags as standard ever since its introduction in the Indian market. The base variant, the N6 is pretty feature loaded, and it comes with a more powerful turbo-petrol engine only, hence the high pricing. The Venue N Line also became the first model from the carmaker to come with a factory-fitted dual dash cam as standard.

Following the trend is Tata’s compact SUV, the Nexon. Post the recent midlife refresh, it gets six airbags that come as standard. Tata’s three-cylinder turbo-petrol makes 120 hp and is available with a 5 or 6-speed manual gearbox, and the 115 hp diesel engine is available with a 6-speed manual and 6-speed AMT.

It is quite frugal as it gives out 17.01–17.44 kmpl for the petrol variants and the diesel variants have a claimed efficiency of 23.23 kmpl. On top of six airbags, the Nexon is loaded with a 360-degree camera, electronic stability programme (ESP), 3-point seatbelts for all passengers, ISOFIX child seat anchorages, and front and rear parking sensors.

It currently gets two airbags as a standard feature, and six airbags are offered only from the Zeta Petrol MT variant onwards, at a starting price of Rs. 8.38 lakhs. The premium hatchback is available in four variants, namely Sigma, Delta, Zeta and Alpha.

It is powered by a 1.2L petrol engine mated to a 5-speed manual, which churns out 22.35 kmpl.

Maruti has started to focus on improving the safety of their cars, both in terms of build quality and feature list. On top of six airbags, safety is further aided by features like ESP with hill hold, ABS, EBD and brake assist.
