Renault Kwid

Spinny Assured Renault Kwid
Renault Kwid

The Renault Kwid was first launched back in 2015, and it can be said that the Kwid kickstarted the off road inspired tough and rugged design for hatchbacks. It was heavily inspired by its larger cousins such as the now discontinued Renault Duster and Renault Koleos. Thanks to its looks and price, the Renault Kwid became an instant hit in the hatchback market, dethroning the Maruti Suzuki offerings for some time. The Kwid features a 5-speed AMT automatic, which the company calls Easy-R. The latest BS6 update added in a lot of quality of life upgrades, such as a new headlight design, tail light design, and larger wheels. The AMT hasn’t had much changes though, and is still operated with a gear selector dial instead of a lever.

Renault Kwid specifications:

  • Engine: 1.0 L petrol
  • Power: 68 PS
  • Torque: 91 Nm
  • Transmission: Manual, Automatic
  • Fuel efficiency: up to 25 kmpl

Hyundai Exter
Hyundai Exter

Hyundai Exter was released in July this year, with a great response from critics and the general public. The Exter features the company’s new futuristic design philosophy, and it attracts attention at every traffic stop. The pièce de résistance of the automatic transmission so to say is the state of the art electronically controlled 5-speed AMT automatic gearbox. The shifts are smooth for an AMT, and is comparable to a torque converter gearbox. The gear changes are quick and precise, which enhances the acceleration and overall performance, and provides the driver some confidence and a sense of control on the road. Hyundai also kept fuel efficiency in mind, and the Exter’s transmission optimises gear ratios to minimise fuel consumption and maximises power delivery.

Hyundai Exter Specifications:

  • Power: up to 83 PS

Maruti Suzuki Fronx

Maruti Fronx
Maruti Fronx

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx is basically the Baleno on steroids. The Fronx feels like an amalgamation of the Grand Vitara and Baleno, but looks sharp and has its own personality. There are two options if you want an automatic transmission, one being a 5 speed AMT and a 6 speed torque converter. Both of the automatic options are quite responsive and have favourable reviews by both critics and customers. Both the Torque Convertor and AMT are quite smooth. Both give an excellent mileage with the Torque Convertor giving a mileage of up to 20.01 kmpl while the AMT gives 22.89 kmpl

Hyundai i20 N-Line

Hyundai i20 N-Line facelift

The Hyundai i20 N-Line is the South Korean car manufacturer’s souped up version of the existing Hyundai i20. The i20 n-line is one of the very few hot hatches left in India, after the Polo was discontinued, and it does manage to impress through its performance. Coupled to the 1-litre turbo petrol engine is a slick 7-speed DCT automatic transmission. This not only due to its exterior changes, and the N-Line branded interior, but because of the exhaust revamp, ECU revamp, and the satisfying dual clutch 7 speed automatic transmission. The dampers used in the N-Line are much stiffer than the standard i20 and so, the N-Line feels more sporty, rolls much lesser, and the steering feels much heavier. The transmission provides efficient gear shifts that help both the performance and the fuel efficiency. The paddle shifters give a very sporty feeling to the car and make the experience much more enjoyable if you enable them.

Hyundai i20 N-Line Specifications

  • Engine: 1 L turbo petrol
  • Power: up to 120 PS
  • Torque: up to 172 Nm
  • Transmission: automatic (iMT, DCT)
  • Fuel Efficiency:up to 20 kmpl
  • Fuel Type: Petrol
  • Seating Capacity: 5

Toyota Rumion

Toyota Rumion

The Toyota Rumion is the rebadged Maruti Suzuki Ertiga that came from the partnership deal of Maruti Suzuki and Toyota. The biggest difference from its Maruti Suzuki counterpart, is its exterior, which looks more like the Hycross from certain angles and the materials on the Toyota are more premium in quality. A torque converter does the automatic transmission duties and is quite smooth with decent gear shifts. The Rumion is excellent when it comes to city driving with unparalleled smoothness. At the same time, it delivers a high fuel efficiency of 20.11 kmpl. It’s equally good on highways, and delivers whenever there’s a need for a quick overtake. Being a Toyota, the gearbox is bound to last ages without any hiccups.

Skoda Slavia

Spinny Assured Skoda Slavia

The Skoda Slavia’s engine is a combination of a 1.0-liter turbo-petrol engine and a torque converter. This engine has some grunt at low revs, and the torque converter knows how to put it to good use. As you push the pedal, the torque converter smoothly dishes out power to the front wheels, all the way to the redline. It can even get a move on when you floor it, downshifting with some real urgency. In terms of performance, it’s comparable to DCT transmissions. Speaking of which, the Slavia comes with a DCT transmission with its 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine, and it’s one of the quickest in its segment (only the Verna is faster). The DSG (Skoda calls DCT as DSG) is hands down the best automatic choice in this class, with brisk acceleration, and lightning fast shifts. The paddle shifters add to the feel and allows for better control. The DSG
