Best Tata Harrier EV Variant to Buy

The base Adventure 65 variant of the Tata Harrier EV offers an attractive list of upmarket features, for example, 8 way-powered Driver & 4 way-powered Co-Driver adjustable Seat, 6 airbags, All Wheel Disc Brakes, Terrain Modes (Normal, Wet, Rough), Air Purifier (PM 2.5 filter), Wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, LED projector headlamps, Leatherette Seat Upholstery, 26.03 cm Cinematic Touchscreen Infotainment by HARMAN, and more. All these features make the base Adventure variant a good value-for-money option. However, the value offered on the next Adventure S 65 variant is far more appealing.

Just for additional Rs 50,000, the Adventure S 65 variant adds a larger 31.24 cm Cinematic Touchscreen Infotainment by HARMAN, Voice Assisted Panoramic Sunroof, Driver Doze-off Alert, Automatic Defogger, Rain Sensing Wipers, and automatic headlamps. In comparison to the base Adventure 65, the Adventure S 65 variant offers a far better value for money.

The next variant, Fearless +, adds a 360-degree camera, 10-speaker JBL sound system, 6-way powered driver seat with memory function, dual-zone climate control, auto dimming IRVM, ventilated front seats, Cooled storage (under front armrest), and more. Except for the Level-2 ADAS safety suite and the Harrier EV’s famed off-road capabilities, the Fearless + variant offers everything expected of a car of its price. And if this variant meets your needs, it would be better to buy it with the larger 75 kWh battery pack, as the price difference is not much from the smaller battery pack.

The next variant, Empowered 75 adds auto parking, 36.9 cm Cinematic Infotainment Screen by Harman Powered by Samsung Neo QLED, Powered Tailgate with Gesture Activation, 540-degree camera (underbody camera with 360-degree camera), Dolby Atmos, blind-view monitor, HD rear camera digital IRVM with recording, memory outside mirrors, Level-2 ADAS safety suite, and more. While the Empowered 75 offers a great value, the top variant, Empowered QWD 75, that adds the dual-motor set-up, boot mode, off-road assist, and more, offers an even greater value, and is recommended if you are considering the top Empowered variant.

Tata Harrier EV Warranty and Service Cost

On the battery packs, Tata is offering Lifetime Warranty and Unlimited Kilometres. However, as Tata’s terms and conditions state, the term ‘lifetime’ means the period of fifteen years from the first date of registration of the vehicle at the local regional transport office, in accordance with the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The term ‘Unlimited’ is on the assumption of fair usage by a customer for personal use of the vehicle and therefore excludes extraordinary usage outside the ordinary course as would be reasonably expected for a vehicle not being used for commercial / trade purposes. Second Registration onwards, the warranty on the battery is 10 years and 2 lakh kilometres. The warranty on the electric motors is 8 years or 1,60,000 km (whichever is earlier), and the vehicle is 3 years or 1,25,000 km (whichever is earlier).  To learn about the service costs of the Tata Harrier EV, you should contact the authorised Tata dealerships.

Why you should consider the Tata Harrier EV

The Tata Harrier EV offers many qualities that make it stand out from the rest. Here are some of the main reasons you would want to buy a Tata Harrier EV.

Most affordable electric car with all-wheel-drive

Tata Harrier EV off-road

The most prominent highlight of the Tata Harrier EV is its off-roading capabilities. What makes it even more attractive is the fact that the Tata Harrier EV is the most affordable electric car with a dual motor setup (one motor at the front axle and one at the rear axle), which gives it an all-wheel-drive configuration. Another crucial point is that its off-roading capabilities are not limited to an all-wheel-drive set-up. Tata Motors has gone all nine yards in making the Tata Harrier EV the best-possible off-roader. Perhaps, Tata decided to cater to the fans of the legendary Tata Safari, who have long been expressing their desire to see a capable Tata off-roader, as they have been left wanting since the discontinuation of the Tata Safari. In addition to an all-wheel-drive setup, the Tata Harrier EV comes with some other features that enable it to do what most cars, including ICE-powered ones such as the Mahindra XUV700, cannot. For example, the Tata Harrier EV comes with off-road assist, terrain modes, and a 540-degree camera.

The off-road assist is like cruise control. With this feature, the SUV can maintain a speed as low as 5 km/hr. The terrain modes – Normal, Snow/Grass, Mud ruts, Sand, Rock Crawl, and Custom help the SUV adjust its drivability, depending on various driving conditions. The 540-degree camera is essentially a multiple-camera setup wherein, in addition to the 360-degree view of outside the SUV, there is an underbody camera, which provides live feed from under the bonnet. The underbody camera alerts the driver if any of the wheels come too close to a curb, improving manoeuvrability in tight spaces. Along with these off-roading features, the Harrier EV offers a 25.3-degree approach angle, 26.4-degree departure angle, and 16.6-degree ramp break-over angle. Moreover, with a 600 mm water wading capacity, you will not need to worry about driving through flooded water on roads during monsoon season.

Familiar design

Tata Harrier has long been known for its beautiful design. Many Harrier owners own it because of the way it looks. It is a big, beefy, commanding SUV with fashionable attire which instantly turns heads on the roads. More importantly, the Tata Harrier has spent around six years in the market; therefore, most are familiar with its design. Even though it is not, the Tata Harrier EV looks just like an electric-powered version of the Tata Harrier and comes with some EV-specific cosmetic updates such as concealed grille area and EV badges. This makes the Tata Harrier EV a more familiarly designed SUV for most buyers, as opposed to the case with the radically designed Mahindra BE 6 and Mahindra XEV 9e, which are a couple of Tata Harrier EV’s main rivals.

Spacious

In addition to a beautiful design, the Tata Harrier has long been known for the cavernous space it offers. The Tata Harrier EV is even larger than the Tata Harrier and therefore is even more spacious. More importantly, the Tata Harrier EV is significantly more spacious than its rivals, Mahindra XEV 9e and BYD Atto 3. As far as measurements are concerned, the Tata Harrier EV is 152 mm longer, 257 mm wider, and 125 mm taller, and has a 21 mm longer wheelbase than the BYD Atto 3. Moreover, the Tata Harrier EV is 225 mm wider and 46 mm taller than the Mahindra XEV 9e. Offering large volumes of space in its cabin, the Tata Harrier EV allows you to free your limbs, relax, and enjoy the grandeur it packs.

Superb Ride Quality

Tata cars have always been popular for their fabulous suspensions, and with the Tata Harrier EV, Tata has gone further in making the ride quality even superior to the standard Tata Harrier. The Tata Harrier EV debuts Tata’s new all-independent suspension system with frequency-dependent dampers. With this suspension system, the Harrier EV offers a ride comfort that makes its comparable to luxury cars, and at the same time, it offers an impressive balance at high speeds.

Feature Wealth

Competing with feature-rich cars like the Mahindra BE 6 and BYD Atto 3 would not have been easy if Tata Harrier EV were not equipped with a host of upmarket features. Tata Motors understood it well and has laden the Tata Harrier EV with as many upmarket features as possible. While the Tata Harrier EV offers many modern-day perks expected of cars at its price, such as a panoramic sunroof, ventilated and powered front seats, and dual-zone climate control, some of its main highlights include auto parking, reverse assist, and a digital IRVM. In auto parking, the car uses multiple radars, cameras, and sensors to park itself without the driver’s input. With auto parking onboard, you do not even need to be in the SUV to park it. Whereas, the reverse assist feature memorises the last 50 meters of your driving path and can automatically reverse the SUV without the need for any intervention at the steering or pedals. The digital IRVM works like a front and rear dashcam. Not only does it act as a screen and relays feed from a roof-mounted camera, but it also records every drive in high definition.

The Tata Harrier EV also offers a ‘Summon mode.’ With this feature, you can move the SUV forward or backwards by its key without any manual intervention. Therefore, using the key, you can move the SUV into a parking spot and automatically bring the SUV back to you.

Why you should not consider the Tata Harrier EV

Like any car in the world, certain characteristics of the Tata Harrier EV may make you skip it and look for any other car. Here are some of the reasons you should not buy a Tata Harrier EV.

Newness of the All-wheel-drive

While Tata sells thousands of cars every month and is one of the leading car brands in India, one of the most reported drawbacks of Tata cars is the technical issues. Over the years, glitches with touchscreens, indicators, and  several controls have reportedly bothered many Tata cars’ owners. And now, the Tata Harrier EV is the first Tata car to feature their newly developed dual-motor set-up that gives it an all-wheel-drive drivetrain. So, it would be wise to be prepared to encounter some bugs and issues with the system during the ownership of the all-wheel-drive Tata Harrier EV.

An electric off-roader

While the Tata Harrier EV is a capable off-roader, it must be kept in mind that it is an electric car – a car that uses electricity as fuel. Imagine enjoying the off-roading adventure in Ladakh valleys, and all of a sudden, you notice that your SUV’s battery is not charged enough to take it to the nearest charging source. Even before taking the Harrier EV to such a place for off-roading, you would need to check the availability of charging stations or any other charging sources. No matter how capable an electric car is, if charging stations are a point of concern, one should think twice before buying it to enjoy off-roading.

Summary

Without a shadow of doubt, the Tata Harrier EV is a great product not only for Tata Motors but also for the entire industry. While the introduction of a dual-motor setup at its most affordable price gives the Tata Harrier EV a great advantage, it is an electric SUV which offers large volumes of space in its cabin, a lot of upmarket features to enjoy, and an unmatchable ride quality. At the same time, before buying the Tata Harrier EV for its off-roading capabilities, it will be important to plan how you will charge it.
