Tata Harrier EV
Last updated 5 months ago

With the Tata Harrier EV officially launched, the EV segment in India has just witnessed a revolution like no other. With all-terrain 4×4 capabilities, unmatched EV architecture, power-packed battery-motor combo and a long list of impressive features, the Harrier EV has changed the future of e-SUVs forever. With such an alluring package up for grabs, what now needs to be seen is how the new EV contender from Tata does when pitched up against veterans like the MG ZS EV, which have truly paved the way for the growth of the e-SUV segment in India. So, without further ado, let’s dive deep into the battle between the Tata Harrier and the MG ZS EV.

Tata Harrier EV vs MG ZS EV: Dimensions

Height1740 mm1649 mm
Wheelbase2741 mm2585 mm

Ground Clearance205 mm177 mm

One look at the comparison chart above, and you will notice that despite both EVs sharing the same mid-size SUV segment, there is a significant difference between the two when it comes to overall dimensions and size.

Talking about the recently launched Harrier EV, the SUV presents itself as a dominant, aggressive, and muscular offering that boasts a solid road presence and a true-blue SUV approach. When compared to the ZS EV, the go-anywhere EV from Tata stands 284 mm longer, 323 mm wider and 91 mm taller. Not only is the Harrier EV comparatively bigger, it is also more spacious and practical with a 156 mm longer wheelbase and a 54-litre larger boot. Overall, the Harrier EV feels much more comfortable on the inside with an extra amount of shoulder room for both front and rear passengers. Another thing that works well in favour of the Harrier EV is its good 205 mm of ground clearance that makes it a capable option when it comes to tackling tougher terrains.

Coming to the MG ZS EV, what you get is a well-proportioned and good-looking package that reflects a bit of elegance mixed with subtle sportiness. Overall, the design of the ZS EV adopts a more elegant approach rather than muscular SUV elements and an aggressive road presence. In terms of dimensions, the ZS EV is more compact and reflects a premium SUV experience rather than a robust all-terrain approach. The in-cabin comfort is great with ample leg and head room and a highly spacious cabin onboard that is good enough for all your luggage needs. Being the smaller SUV amongst the two, driving the ZS EV is super convenient throughout the city, especially when it comes to narrow parking spaces and lanes.

While both SUVs offer good looks and great in-cabin space and comfort, the Harrier EV comes across as a better pick for those seeking high practicality, better space and a rugged approach. The final choice, therefore, comes down to the buyer’s preference.

No matter how big or small an EV is, its real worth lies in how it performs and what range it offers. And as far as these markers as concerned, the Harrier EV surely hits the ball out of the park.

Comparing both mid-sized EVs, the Harrier offers two battery pack options, including a smaller 65 kWh battery pack with a single motor setup and a larger 75 kWh battery pack with a dual motor quad-wheel drivetrain. The MG ZS EV, on the other hand, offers only a 50.3 kWh battery pack with a single motor setup.

In terms of raw performance, the ZS EV’s 50.3 kWh battery pack can be compared with the Harrier EV’s smaller 65 kWh battery pack, as both offer a single motor setup. Even though Tata has not yet revealed the official range and torque figure for the battery pack in question, in terms of power output, the Harrier EV does exceptionally well by offering 62 PS of additional power over and above the 176 PS of power the ZS EV offers. Moreover, considering that the Harrier EV is based on Tata’s new “acti.ev+” platform, the expected range will likely be between 500-550 km, which, if true, would be far better than what the MG ZS EV offers. Nonetheless, the ZS EV does offer a great driving experience with a good amount of power and torque on offer. However, when pitched against the Harrier EV, it seems as if the ZS EV would struggle.

Coming to the bigger battery pack of the Harrier EV, the performance on offer is unmatched by almost every EV competitor, including the MG ZS EV. This is because the bigger battery pack comes with a dual-motor quad-wheel drive 4×4 setup, which is a first for Tata after the Safari Storm. This battery-motor pair offers a combined power of 390 PS with a combined torque of 504 NM. That’s not all. The 75 kWh battery pack also offers a mind-blowing range of 622 km on a single charge, which renders the Harrier an incredible price-to-performance ratio.

Even in terms of 4×4 capabilities, the Harrier EV is truly unmatched with several all-terrain oriented features such as low-speed cruise control, 6 terrain modes, multiple drive modes and a segment-first transparent mode that projects what is beneath the vehicle on the infotainment.

Overall, when it comes to performance and range, the Harrier EV does exceptionally well thanks to Tata’s new EV architecture that offers unmatched power and torque figures alongside a long single charge range that does not disappoint in any manner.

Tata Harrier EV vs MG ZS EV: Price Comparison

Top VariantRs. 29.50 to 32.50 lakh (Estimated)Rs. 20.50 lakh

When it comes to the price comparison, the Tata Harrier EV comes with a three-trim lineup that includes Adventure, Fearless and Empowred. On the other hand, the MG ZS EV’s variant lineup is spread across 4 major trims, including the Executive, Excite Pro, Exclusive Plus and Essence, which are spread across 7 variants.

Talking about the ZS EV, what impresses prospective buyers the most is its highly affordable price tag that gives the SUV an unignorable value quotient. The ZS EV carefully curates trims with ample features, offering a blend that caters to every need. With prices starting at Rs. 17.99 Lakh, the ZS EV in its base trim is about Rs. 3.5 Lakh cheaper than the Harrier EV. Whether or not this jump is truly justified is something that will be known once Tata releases more details about the Harrier EV’s trim lineup and inclusions. However, considering that Tata is offering a lifetime unlimited kilometre warranty with the Harrier EV, the SUV’s overall value quotient is already quite strong. Moreover, with better performance on offer, the price jump is something that might not bother many buyers.

Tata Harrier EV vs MG ZS EV: Summary

Be it the Tata Harrier EV or the MG ZS EV, both cars offer an impressive package that checks many boxes one might look for in an e-SUV. While the MG ZS EV carries a more elegant and curvy look, the Harrier EV, on the other hand, comes across as a robust and sizable SUV with muscular elements and a dominating road presence.

While in terms of dimension and design, the choice is more or less based on body preferences and style, when it comes to the powertrain, the Harrier EV offers two equally good battery pack options, with the bigger one offering a quad-wheel drive setup and dual-motors. With a claimed range of up to 622 km on a single charge, the larger battery pack is truly a force to reckon with, while the smaller pack’s worthiness is yet to be seen, even though what’s known of it only hints at nothing but sheer performance. In terms of onboard features and safety, both SUVs offer a top-notch package, with the Harrier EV having a few more cards up its sleeve.
