Last updated 6 months ago

New car buyers are increasingly looking at EVs as their next car, and with range anxiety being a big issue, we take a look at ten EVs offering the highest range under Rs. 30 lakhs.

Electric vehicles are a great form of personal mobility. They are silent, emit zero emissions, undergo less wear and tear compared to regular cars, and are also quite fast. However, while a regular car can be topped up with fuel in a matter of a few minutes, electric vehicles take a longer time to replenish their range. Furthermore, with EV charging infrastructure not at the same level as petrol pump infrastructure in India, replenishing the range of an EV becomes an even tougher task.

To combat this issue, car makers have been furiously working on increasing the range of their electric vehicles. In a matter of few years, Indian car makers have dramatically increased the range of their electric vehicles, making them more feasible for private car buyers who use their vehicles for commuting daily as well as highway journeys. If you are looking for an EV, we have listed 10 EVs with the highest range under Rs. 30 lakh on sale in India today.

List of EVs with the Highest Range Under Rs 30 Lakh

In choosing the cars on this list, we have stuck to some basic rules. Certain EVs are offered with multiple battery pack options. In such a case, we have only considered the battery pack which offers more range while satisfying our price criteria, and the price mentioned in the table is for these battery pack variants only.

MG Windsor EV

The MG Windsor EV is one of the latest electric vehicles to be launched in India, and furthermore, MG has launched the Essence Pro variant of the crossover vehicle. It features a larger battery pack which pushes its range close to 450 km. While the new variant features a bigger battery pack, MG hasn’t upgraded the electric motor for an increased power output.

The Windsor EV Essence Pro features modern features such as a 15.6 inch touchscreen, 9 speaker Infinity audio system, a fixed pane glass roof and a powered tailgate. On the safety front, it gets 6 airbags, ESP, hill hold assist, hill descent control, disc brakes on all four wheels and a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) among other features.

While the Windsor EV is an electric vehicle, the engineers at MG have tuned it for a conventional driving experience, meaning that it lacks that instant punch that has made EVs synonymous with performance. It is suited for those who have a moderate driving style, and prefer smoothness over outright acceleration.

  • Range: 449 km
  • Charging Time (AC): 10 to 100 percent in 9.5 hours using 7.4 kW charger

Mahindra XUV400

The XUV400 is the smallest SUV sold by Mahindra in India, and its top spec EL Pro variant is available with the larger battery pack option. The power output remains the same for both battery pack options. The XUV400 is based on the XUV300, which features an internal combustion engine (ICE). However, as it’s an EV and is not bound by the sub 4 metre rules, the XUV400 is longer than its ICE cousin.

Mahindra has given the XUV400 a modern feature set. It gets an electric sunroof, 10.25 inch HD touchscreen, a similarly sized digital instrument cluster, wireless smartphone connectivity and connected car tech. It is loaded with safety tech as well in the form of 6 airbags, hill hold assist, disc brakes on all four wheels, ESP, ISOFIX mounting points and TPMS. It also has a five star safety rating from Bharat NCAP.

In terms of the driving experience, the XUV400 features a refined electric powertrain but it still packs a punch. You can adjust the power output with driving mode. What stands out is the ride quality as the XUV400 has a highly absorbent suspension setup that keeps things smooth inside the cabin.

MG ZS EV

The ZS EV was the first EV to be launched by MG, and in fact, it was among the first few long range EVs that were introduced in India. It is offered with a single battery pack option, giving customers more flexibility in their choice of variant, of which there are four: Executive, Excite Pro, Exclusive Plus, Essence.

While it has been around for a few years, the ZS EV still features all modern day features. A 10.1 inch touchscreen takes centre stage, and it is responsible for controlling a lot of the features. The driver also gets a 7 inch instrument cluster. There is connected car tech as well and a panoramic sunroof lends the cabin a premium ambience. Safety features such as 6 airbags, ESP, 360 degree camera and ISOFIX mounts are also present. However, it’s the Level 2 ADAS system which is the highlight of the safety package and the ZS EV also has a 5 star safety rating from Global NCAP.

Just like other electric cars from MG, the power delivery is tuned for comfort rather than outright acceleration However, that said, the ZS EV packs enough power to outrun most cars of its size, and it’s softly set up suspension keeps things calm inside the cabin.

MG ZS EV Specifications

  • Battery Capacity: 50.3 kWh

  • Charging Time (AC): Fully charged in 9 hours using a 7.4 kW charger

Hyundai Creta Electric

The Hyundai Creta Electric is based on the highly popular regular ICE Creta, and looks quite similar. Like most other EVs, it is available with two battery pack options. However, the larger battery pack is only available with two variants: Smart (O) and Excellence.

Hyundai cars are known for being feature rich, and the Creta Electric is no different. It’s packed with features such as dual zone climate control, panoramic sunroof, 8 way electrically adjustable driver and passenger seats, and a memory function for the driver’s seat as well. Safety features include 6 airbags, ESP, hill hold assist, hill descent control, disc brakes on all four wheels, ISOFIX mounting points and TPMS.

The power delivery of the Hyundai Creta Electric has been tuned to mimic regular ICE cars, and it feels quite natural to drive. The electric drivetrain also offers a highly refined driving experience. Tata Nexon EV 45

The Nexon EV is the first long range EV that made electric vehicles popular in India. Over the years, it has gone through multiple updates, and in its current guise, it is available with three battery pack options, the largest of which bears the name Nexon EV 45. In comparison to the smaller battery pack options, it is available across all variants of the Nexon EV, with minor revisions to the feature list.

Tata offers the latest features on the Nexon EV such as a premium JBL sound system, air purifier, auto dimming IRVM, wireless smartphone connectivity, rear AC vents and a cooled glove box. The Indian car maker is big on safety as well, and 6 airbags are standard across all variants. Furthermore, it gets ESP, all wheel disc brakes, 360 degree camera, front parking sensors and TPMS. The Nexon EV also has a 5 star crash test rating from Bharat NCAP.

The Nexon EV has always been a great car to drive. The performance on offer is adequate for urban or highway driving, although it might not feel as punchy as some of the more potent options in the market. Tata Curvv EV

The Curvv EV is Tata’s answer to electric SUVs positioned one step above the Nexon EV, and the Indian car maker has done it in style by introducing a coupe SUV, instead of the usual boxy design we see nowadays. The Curvv EV is offered with two battery pack options, and the larger one is available with all variants except the base.

Tata has gone the distance in offering the latest features. The Curvv EV gets a 12.3 inch HD touchscreen, 9 speaker JBL sound system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 10.25 inch digital instrument cluster, panoramic sunroof and a powered tailgate among other features. BYD Atto 3

The BYD Atto 3 was the first EV launched by the Chinese car maker in India, and it is available in three variants. The base Dynamic variant is offered with a smaller battery pack, whereas the Premium and Superior variants feature the larger battery pack. However, for purposes of this article, we will focus on the Premium variant, as the Superior variant is priced over Rs. 30 lakh.

The Atto 3 is equipped with modern features, with its 12.8 inch rotating touchscreen taking centre stage. An 8 speaker premium sound system is also offered along with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. BYD eMAX 7

The BYD eMAX 7 is available in two variants, Premium and Superior, and the latter is equipped with the larger battery pack. Buyers can opt between a 6 seater or a 7 seater configuration. The range mentioned for the eMAX 7 is according to the NEDC cycle, as BYD has not revealed the ARAI range for the MPV. However, the NEDC cycle is stricter than the ARAI cycle for testing, and thus the ARAI range will be more than the 530 km NEDC range of the eMAX 7.

Like other BYD cars, the eMAX 7 also has a rotating touchscreen (12.8 inches). A 6 speaker sound system takes care of the audio duties. The driver and passenger seat offer 6 way electrical adjustment and the cabin ambience is uplifted by a fixed glass panoramic sunroof and the front seats are ventilated. The eMAX 7 takes care of safety with 6 airbags, ESP, hill hold assist, ISOFIX mounting points, 360 degree camera and many ADAS features.

The eMAX 7 is tuned for linear power delivery even in Sport mode, however, it can keep up with traffic on the highway with ease. The suspension is tuned for comfort, and combined with its low centre of gravity, the MPV also behaves well in the corners. The steering is light at slow speeds, but weighs up as the speeds increase.

BYD eMAX 7 Specifications

  • Electric Motor: Single Electric Motor on Front Axle
  • Battery Capacity: 71.8 kWh

Hence, we will be considering the larger battery pack of the BE 6 for this article.

The BE 6 features a dual screen layout, each 12.3 inches in size and offering crisp graphics quality. There is a 16 speaker Harman Kardon audio system on offer that offers great clarity. The BE 6 also gets other premium features such as an augmented reality head up display, fixed glass panoramic sunroof, and an auto park feature as well. On the safety front it is well equipped too with 7 airbags, ESP, 360 degree camera and a Level 2 ADAS system. The BE 6 has a 5 star crash test rating from Bharat NCAP.
