In line with Europe’s Euro 7 standards, the BS7 rollout will continue in phases over 6 years, ending in April 2035. Here is what you need to know about the upcoming BS7 emission norms.

BS7 Emission Norms: Timeline

Like BS6 emission norms, the BS7 rollout will happen in phases. For BS7, the government has decided on three phases.

Phase 1 – April 2029

In Phase 1, all passenger cars manufactured from April 2029 onwards must comply with BS7 emission norms.

Phase 2 – 2030

By 2030, small commercial vehicles like pick-up vans must comply with BS7 emission norms.

Phase 3 – 2035

By 2035, all commercial vehicles, including heavy-duty trucks, buses, and construction equipment, must comply with BS7 emission norms. This phase will start in April 2031.

BS7 Norms: What’s New

Exhaust pollutants

While the proposed BS7 norms continue with existing cut-off limits for most pollutants, the particulate matter limit, currently 23 nanometres, will be reduced to 10 nanometres. This will let smaller particles be included in measurements.

For heavy-duty vehicles, the cut-off limits for all major pollutants are proposed to be reduced by 20 to 50 per cent.

Non-exhaust pollutants

The proposed BS7 emission norms also include non-exhaust emissions, such as small particles released into the air by brake and tyre use. For this, tests will have to be done in real-world driving conditions. Moreover, to comply with BS7 norms, manufacturers will need to change the materials they use for brakes and tyres. The government will also need to allow independent testing agencies to run tests to ensure compliance after vehicles are sold.

Note: The proposed BS7 norms are still at the draft stage and can change before being finalised.

FAQs

When will the BS7 emission norms come into effect?

The BS7 emission norms will come into effect in phases. The first phase, starting in April 2029, will require all new passenger vehicles to comply with BS7. The second phase will come in 2030 and cover all small commercial vehicles. The third phase will start in April 2031 and will require all heavy-duty vehicles to be compliant by 2035.

Will the BS7 emission norms make cars more expensive?

Yes, BS7 emission norms will make cars more expensive, as manufacturers will have to spend significantly on research and development to make their cars comply with the new norms.

How do BS7 emission norms differ from BS6 norms?

Most BS6 emission limits are expected to carry over to BS7. However, some new BS7 norms will reduce the particulate matter limit from 23 nanometres to 10 nanometres. Moreover, BS7 norms will include non-exhaust emissions, such as particles from brake wear and tyre abrasion.

What will happen to my BS6 car after BS7 emission norms are implemented?

Reports suggest that the BS7 emission norms will not affect BS6 cars at all. For BS6 cars, their lifespan won’t be reduced, and they won’t require different fuel.

The Indian government will implement the BS7 emission norms in phases, starting from April 2029.
