The Tata Tiago that is available today is much bigger and more potent than any version that debuted earlier and is being offered in 4 fuel options, including petrol, CNG, manual and AMT. On the other hand, the Alto 800 was discontinued in 2023 and therefore has only used-car relevance nowadays. When new, the petrol variant was expected to provide a distance of 22.05 km/l, while the corresponding figures for earlier modifications of the Tiago petrol are around 19 km/l.

Real-world mileage follows a similar pattern in petrol form. The Alto 800’s small engine and very light body make it more economical, while the Tiago uses more fuel but offers considerably more power, stronger highway ability and better all-round versatility. CNG changes the equation, however, because the current Tiago CNG has delivered exceptional mileage in recent testing. So, the right answer depends on whether you are comparing petrol economy, CNG running costs or overall usability.

Table of Contents

Tata Tiago vs Maruti Alto 800 Specs

Tata Tiago vs Maruti Alto 800 Claimed Mileage

Tata Tiago vs Maruti Alto 800 Real-World Fuel Efficiency

Why Is the Alto 800 More Fuel-Efficient?

Tata Tiago vs Maruti Alto 800 CNG Mileage

Tata Tiago vs Maruti Alto 800 Fuel Cost Comparison

Tata Tiago vs Maruti Alto 800 CNG Running Cost

Tata Tiago vs Maruti Alto 800 Price

Summary

FAQs about Tata Tiago and Maruti Alto 800 Mileage

Tata Tiago vs Maruti Alto 800 Specs

Currently, the Tata Tiago has a 1,199cc three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine with 86hp and 113Nm power outputs. Buyers can choose either a 5-speed manual transmission or the 5-speed automated manual transmission. Additionally, Tata has a factory-fitted CNG version that uses the same base engine but produces 75.5hp and 96.5Nm in CNG operation. Unlike other models that have CNG options, older hatchbacks, the Tiago range has manuals as well as AMT options.

The final Alto 800 used Maruti’s 796cc three-cylinder petrol engine. It produced roughly 48PS and 69Nm in petrol form, dropping to about 41PS and 60Nm when running on CNG. Both petrol and CNG versions were manual-only. The Alto’s biggest efficiency advantage was its low weight, with late versions weighing around 850kg.

Specification

Tata Tiago

Maruti Alto 800

Petrol engine

1.2L, 3-cylinder

0.8L, 3-cylinder

Petrol power

86hp

~48PS

Petrol torque

113Nm

69Nm

CNG power

75.5hp

~41PS

CNG torque

96.5Nm

~60Nm

Transmission

5MT / 5AMT

5MT

Petrol tank

35 litres

35 litres

Current status

On sale

Discontinued

The performance of the Tiago speaks for itself. The petrol engine option for the Tiago generates almost double the power compared to the Alto 800, hence making it a more effective car for use on highways, helping with overtaking and carrying passengers. The Alto has given up some of that performance in exchange for low weight, simplicity in engineering, and savings on fuel costs.

Tata Tiago vs Maruti Alto 800 Claimed Mileage

There is one important caveat with the Tiago. Tata has not published a fresh set of 2026 certified mileage figures for the updated model. Its CNG versions were rated higher, at roughly 26.49 km/kg for the manual and 28.06 km/kg for the AMT.

According to specifications, the BS6 Alto 800 had certification values of 22.05 km/l for petrol and 31.59 km/kg for CNG. It weighs hundreds of kilograms less than the Tiago and produces only around 48PS and 69Nm. Its engine therefore has much less mass to move every time the car accelerates, and its modest performance encourages gentle driving.

The Tiago’s lift of 86hp and 113Nm gives it a distinctive driving progression. It’s much more capable when it comes to driving at highway speeds, overtaking slower vehicles, carrying four or five passengers and so on. Although this performance comes at the expense of extra fuel consumption, it renders the Tata a vastly more versatile vehicle than it could have ever been in metropolitan traffic congestion.

So, while the Alto 800 wins petrol efficiency, the Tiago’s additional fuel consumption comes with significantly more performance and capability.

Also Read: Tata Tiago Alternatives: Competitors of Tata Tiago

Tata Tiago vs Maruti Alto 800 CNG Mileage

The comparison with CNG yields quite an unexpected outcome. The recently tested Tiago CNG AMT has shown a mileage of about 33.33 km/kg in its mixed city-highway journey, which is not merely an empty claim but real proof from the road that is even better than what many small CNG vehicles achieve in practice.

The Alto 800 CNG was officially rated at 31.59 km/kg, but current used-car guidance generally places real-world mileage around 24.5–26.5 km/kg. Its practical mixed petrol economy of roughly 16.5 km/l is better than the Tiago petrol manual’s approximately 14.95 km/l, and at 1,500km per month it can save close to ₹1,000 in petrol.

Tata Tiago CNG is the most economical option to maintain, as its recent figure of 33.33 km/kg says that the fuel costs will be very low and much cheaper than Alto 800 CNG as well as petrol cars. In addition, it will provide a lot more power too, along with an AMT option.

Overall, choose a used Maruti Alto 800 if your priorities are low purchase cost, simplicity and strong petrol mileage for city use. Choose the Tata Tiago if you want a current new car, more power, better highway usability, automatic availability or factory CNG with extremely low running costs. The Alto remains the petrol-efficiency champion, but the Tiago is the more complete and versatile car.

Related Blogs:
Maruti Swift vs Tata Tiago: Real World Mileage Comparison
Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 Alternatives: Competitors of Maruti Suzuki Alto 800
Hyundai Grand i10 Nios vs Tata Tiago Real World Mileage Comparison

FAQs about Tata Tiago and Maruti Alto 800 Mileage

Q. Which has better petrol mileage, Tata Tiago or Maruti Alto 800?

The Alto 800 has better petrol mileage.
