The Tiago has a more powerful 1.2-litre petrol engine, and factory-fitted CNG is also available. In contrast, the Kwid gets lighter body construction along with a tinier 1.0-litre petrol engine. According to current official figures, the Kwid gets mileage of up to 22.5 km/l, while the new figures for the 2026 ARAI mileage of the revised Tiago are yet to be declared officially.

Real-world testing makes the difference clearer. The Kwid petrol is the more economical choice if you want to run purely on petrol, while the Tiago CNG is considerably cheaper to operate than either petrol hatchback. The Tiago also offers more power and torque, so this comparison ultimately comes down to whether your priority is maximum petrol economy or a stronger all-round hatchback with a lower-cost CNG option.

Table of Contents

Tata Tiago vs Renault Kwid Specs

Tata Tiago vs Renault Kwid Claimed Mileage

Tata Tiago vs Renault Kwid Real-World Fuel Efficiency

Tata Tiago vs Renault Kwid Fuel Cost Comparison

Tata Tiago CNG Running Cost

Why Is the Renault Kwid More Fuel-Efficient on Petrol?

Tata Tiago vs Renault Kwid Price

Summary

FAQs

Tata Tiago vs Renault Kwid Specs

The current Tata Tiago uses a 1,199cc three-cylinder petrol engine producing 86hp and 113Nm. It is available with a 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT. The factory CNG version uses the same basic engine but produces around 75.5hp and 96.5Nm in CNG mode. Tata also offers CNG with both manual and AMT gearboxes, giving the Tiago a wider choice of low-running-cost configurations.

The Renault Kwid uses a smaller 999cc three-cylinder petrol engine producing 69hp and 92.5Nm. It too is available with a 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT. The Kwid is smaller and lighter than the Tiago, which is one of the main reasons it uses less petrol in everyday driving. It also carries a smaller 28-litre fuel tank compared with the Tiago’s 35-litre petrol tank.

Specification

Tata Tiago

Renault Kwid

Engine

1.2L petrol / CNG

1.0L petrol

Displacement

1,199cc

999cc

Petrol power

86hp

69hp

Petrol torque

113Nm

92.5Nm

CNG power

75.5hp

—

Transmission

5MT / 5AMT

5MT / 5AMT

Drive layout

FWD

FWD

Petrol tank

35 litres

28 litres

In terms of performance, the Tiago has the upper hand with its higher levels of power and torque that can come in handy when it comes to carrying loads of people, going up hills and making overtakes on the highway. The manual is rated at 21.46 km/l, while the AMT is slightly higher at 22.3 km/l. That makes the automatic unusually efficient on paper and gives the Kwid a strong advantage for buyers primarily focused on petrol consumption.

Tata has not released a new official fuel-efficiency rating for the refreshed Tiago 2026. The previous petrol manual’s efficiency figures were around 20.09 km/l, but it wouldn’t be wise to flag that as the official Tiago 2026 numbers since it is misleading. That gives a simple mixed reference of roughly 14.95 km/l. The latest Tiago continues with the same basic engine, and current road-test impressions also indicate that buyers can expect around 13 km/l or slightly more in the city and roughly 17 km/l on open roads.

The Kwid engine functions more efficiently when it runs on petrol. With instrument-based evaluations, the 1.0-litre manual showed an average of 15.1 km/l in city driving and 22.5 km/l when driving on highways, which means that its overall consumption is around 18.8 km/l. The average fuel consumption for Kwid’s automatic version is slightly lower than 18.7 km/l. The real-life data on fuel consumption obtained through research on both automatics and manuals is close to 18 km/l.

Tiago Petrol MT

Tiago Petrol AMT*

Kwid Petrol MT

Kwid Petrol AMT

City

13.3 km/l

Varies

15.1 km/l

14.9 km/l

Highway

16.6 km/l

~18 km/l possible

22.5 km/l

22.5 km/l

Combined reference

~14.95 km/l

~16.5 km/l

~18.6–18.8 km/l

~18 km/l

Petrol tank

35L

35L

28L

28L

*Tiago AMT combined figure is an owner-oriented/current practical reference rather than a directly comparable instrumented 2026 average.

Thus, the Kwid is definitively the winner when it comes to fuel economy edge. In a recent test involving mixed driving, the Tiago CNG AMT achieved a fuel economy figure of around 33.33 km/kg. That is an incredibly good figure, which makes the CNG Tiago much cheaper to run than any petrol variant.

At 1,500 km per month and CNG priced at approximately ₹86.98 per kg, the Tiago would require roughly 45kg of CNG. That works out to around ₹3,915 per month, approximately ₹47,000 per year, and roughly ₹2.35 lakh over five years.

Tiago CNG AMT

Running Cost

Real-world reference

23 km/kg

Monthly CNG use

~65.2 kg

Monthly fuel cost

~₹5,675

Annual fuel cost

~₹68,100

5-year fuel cost

~₹3.41 lakh

This means that the Tiago CNG is ₹4,000 lower per month than the Kwid petrol manual at the assumed usage levels. Although it should be noted that the 33.33 km/kg figure is not something all users can rely on in every situation, it is safe to say that CNG will still be the most economical option.

Renault does offer an authorised CNG retrofit option for manual Kwid variants, but there is no equally strong current official or instrumented mileage figure for that setup. For that reason, it is better not to force it into the main cost comparison.

Why Is the Renault Kwid More Fuel-Efficient on Petrol?

The main differentiating factors here are the weight and engine size of the cars. The Kwid has a 999 cc engine generating 69hp, while the Tiago comes with a 1.2-litre engine producing 86 hp. Because of this, the Kwid has less vehicle weight to deal with and consumes less fuel in the process of moderate driving or steady cruising.

That advantage becomes especially obvious on highways, where the Kwid has returned more than 22 km/l in testing compared with around 16–17 km/l for the Tiago petrol. The Tiago’s extra output is useful, but stronger performance generally demands more fuel.

The Tiago is, however, not excessively inefficient considering its size and power, but is made in the configuration of a more substantial hatchback. Drivers who often travel with passengers or do a lot of highway driving will appreciate the additional 17hp and 20 Nm, irrespective of the fact that the Kwid is a more economical car.

Used Renault Kwid Cars

Starting From

₹ 5 Lakh

Explore Pre-Owned Cars

Tata Tiago vs Renault Kwid Price

The Renault Kwid is also slightly cheaper to buy in petrol form. Its current range starts at approximately ₹4.53 lakh ex-showroom, while the Tiago starts around ₹4.77 lakh. The difference becomes more noticeable when comparing automatic variants, where the Kwid AMT remains particularly affordable.

The Tiago also has a stronger overall offering as buyers can get it in several configurations: petrol manual, petrol AMT, CNG manual, and CNG AMT. Even though the CNG versions cost more, the consumer can have significant savings achieved through low running costs.

Model

Variant

Approx. However, for someone who is riding quite a lot, taking into consideration the possibly smaller running cost of a Tiago CNG than buying a Kwid will be a more interesting option.

Also Explore: Renault Kwid Image Gallery: Interior, Exterior

Summary

The Renault Kwid is the clear petrol-mileage winner. Its manual returns roughly 18.6–18.8 km/l in real-world use, while the Tiago petrol manual sits around 14.95 km/l. The Kwid AMT also maintains a strong efficiency advantage over the Tiago petrol automatic.

The Tiago has a lot more punch, better performance, and a larger variety of engines to choose from. What stands out most, however, is that its factory-fitted CNG units change the ownership equation entirely. In one of the recent Tiago CNG AMT tests, the car managed to achieve a fuel economy of 33.33 km/kg, lower than that of the competitor’s model.

Overall, choose the Renault Kwid if maximum petrol mileage, lower petrol purchase price and economical everyday commuting are your priorities. Choose the Tata Tiago if you want stronger performance, a more substantial hatchback and especially factory CNG, which offers the lowest fuel cost of all the options compared here.

Related Blogs:
Complete Buying Guide: Tata Tiago
Comparison: Used Tata Tiago vs New Tata Tigor
Renault Kwid Safety Rating: NCAP Rating, Safety Features
Tata Tiago Safety Rating͏: NCAP Rat͏ing ͏and Safet͏y Features

FAQs

Q. Which has better petrol mileage, Tata Tiago or Renault Kwid?

The Renault Kwid has better petrol mileage.
