The Hector Tomahawk PHEV is MG’s first product based on MG ADAPT, which stands for Advanced Drive Architecture Platform Technology. It is the brand’s new intelligent architecture, which offers flexible mobility by accommodating battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, range-extended electric, and hybrid powertrains.

In competition with petrol- and diesel-powered rivals such as the Mahindra XUV 7XO and the Tata Safari, the Hector Tomahawk stands out with its plug-in hybrid powertrain. This powertrain consists of a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated Atkinson-cycle petrol engine paired with a 20.5 kWh battery pack and a permanent magnet electric motor. The engine produces 102 PS of power and 125 Nm of torque. The electric motor produces 201 PS of power and 237 Nm of torque. However, the combined output of the engine and electric motors is 198 PS of power and 230 Nm of torque.

The setup is mated to a dedicated hybrid automatic transmission (DHT). As a PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), the Hector Tomahawk offers four drive modes.

Pure EV: Electric motor drives the wheels.

Series hybrid: The engine recharges the battery while the electric motor drives the wheels.

Parallel hybrid: Both the engine and electric motor together drive the wheels for maximum performance.

Engine direct drive: Only the engine powers the wheels, minimising conversion losses for efficient highway driving.

Most importantly, the powertrain requires no manual input from the driver and automatically switches between all drive modes. MG claims the system switches modes in just 0.1 seconds, depending on vehicle speed, throttle inputs, charge level, and road conditions.

As mentioned earlier, electric-only range is rated at over 115km, and with a full tank of fuel and a completely charged battery, it can travel over 1,100km. Meanwhile, a 3.3kW AC charger can top up the battery from 10 to 100 per cent in 7.5 hours, while a 25kW DC charger takes 35 minutes to charge it from 30 to 80 per cent.

As mentioned, the Hector Tomahawk PHEV can cover over 115 km in EV (electric-only) mode. Moreover, with a full tank of fuel and a fully charged battery, the SUV can drive over 1,100 km. As far as charging the 20.5 kWh battery is concerned, a 3.3 kW AC charger can charge it from 10 to 100 per cent in 7.5 hours, and a 25 kW DC charger can charge it from 30 to 80 per cent in 35 minutes.

MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV: Dimensions & Design

MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV

The MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV is 4,745 mm long, 2,130 mm wide, 1,770 mm tall, and has a 2,810 mm long wheelbase. Up front, the Hector Tomahawk PHEV gets a large black grille with chrome studs, large rectangular LED projector headlamps with DRLs, and an illuminated MG logo atop the grille. Below the headlamps are functional air ducts for improved aerodynamics and gloss-black trim. The side profile is cleaner and smoother than the front and features black cladding covering the SUV’s bottom, sleek 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, and black roof rails. At the rear, the SUV features wraparound LED tail lamps and a dual-tone bumper with a silver skid plate.

The MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV is available in 6 exterior colour options: Pearl White, Starry Black, Aurora Silver, Celadon Blue, Turquoise Green, and Shadow Gold.
