Although the Ignis is equipped with basic safety features, crash-test results indicate it will provide minimal protection to its occupants in the unfortunate event of a collision.

Continue reading to find out the NCAP results in detail and the entire list of safety features on the Maruti Suzuki Ignis itself.

Table of Contents

Maruti Suzuki Ignis NCAP Safety Rating

Maruti Suzuki Ignis Safety Features

Summary

FAQs about Maruti Suzuki Ignis Safety Rating

Maruti Suzuki Ignis NCAP Safety Rating

Bharat NCAP (BNCAP) was introduced in India to test cars to safer standards on the same calibre as Global NCAP. However, the Maruti Ignis is yet to be tested according to Bharat NCAP. Its current ratings are based on the December 2022 tests provided by Global NCAP using the new protocols.

During those tests, the Ignis scored 1 star in the case of adult occupants (16.48/34 points) and 0 stars in the case of child occupants (3.86/49 points). Those points are below average; out of 34 possible points for adults, it earned just 16.48. The test results indicate a critical deficiency in occupant protection.

ALSO READ: Safest Cars in India

Maruti Suzuki Ignis Adult Occupant Protection Rating

Frontal Offset Test (64 km/h)

Passenger compartment: Not so stable

Head and neck (driver and passenger): Good

Driver’s chest: Weak

Passenger’s chest: Adequate

Driver’s knees: Marginal

Bodyshell: Unstable (runs the risk of additional deformation during a harder crash)

Side Impact Test (50 km/h)

Driver’s head: Weak

Driver’s chest: Poor

Abdomen: Adequate

Pelvis: Good

None of the side head airbags, side pole test not carried out

No electronic stability control

These were the problems that led to a low NCAP score.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis Child Occupant Protection Rating

The Ignis scored (3.86) out of 49 on child safety, which includes 0 in the dynamic crash test and the vehicle assessment. Basic passive and active safety features are:

Airbags

The driver and the passenger have dual front airbags. The new 2025 Ignis includes side/curtain airbags on the top Alpha model, giving a total of six airbags.

Anti-lock Brakes (ABS) with EBD

ABS is used to avoid lock-up of the wheels during the braking procedure and has Electronic Brakeforce Distribution to balance the brakes. Ignis uses front disc/rear drum brakes, indicating that ABS/EBD come in handy to hold the car together during hard braking.

ISOFIX Child-Seat Mounts

Standard of the two rear outboard seats giving the option of fitting compatible child seats.

Seat Belt Reminders

The Ignis also includes a seatbelt reminder system in the driver’s seat (and, in some models, in the passenger seat as well) to encourage the usage of seatbelts.

Parking Sensors

All variants come equipped with reverse parking sensors, which help to manoeuvre at low speeds. A rear-view camera is fitted to some models of higher trims.

Immobiliser & Locks

There is an engine immobiliser designed to stop theft (factory-fitted), child locks/central-locking, which has an auto-lock feature.

Stability Control (ESP)

The recent Ignis 2025 now fits the Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) to all variants, and this is when you need to control the car in slippery weather. The stability control was not available in the older model.

Hill-Hold Assist

This allows preventing the rollback on slopes, available in AMT versions.

No Advanced Driver-Aids

Importantly, the Ignis does not provide any Level-2 ADAS systems. It does not have lane-keep, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot cameras or self-emergency brakes. Its safety tech is limited to the essentials.

The following table provides an overview of the notable safety specifications of the Maruti Suzuki Ignis:

Feature

Specification

Airbags

Yes (2 airbags standard; 6 in top variant)

ISOFIX (Child-Seat Mount)

Yes

Overspeed Warning

Yes

ADAS

No (no ADAS suite)

ABS

Yes

EBD

Yes

BNCAP Adult Rating

No formal Bharat NCAP published rating available

BNCAP Child Rating

No formal Bharat NCAP published rating available

BNCAP Overall

No formal Bharat NCAP overall rating available

GNCAP Rating

Yes (1 adult & 0 child from Global NCAP test)

EBA (Brake Assist)

Yes (Brake Assist included)

ESC (Electronic Stability Control)

Yes (ESP standard)

TPMS (Tyre Pressure System)

No (no TPMS)

Seat Belt Warning

Yes

Hill Assist (Hill Start Assist)

Yes

Hill Descent Control

No

Parking Camera

Yes (rear camera on higher trims)

Blind Spot Detection

No

Speed Alert

Yes

Engine Immobiliser

Yes

Central Locking

Yes

Speed-sensing Door Lock

Yes

Child Safety Lock

Yes (rear door locks)

Fog Lights

Usually ‘No’ on base; available on some trims

Door Ajar Warning

Yes

Surround View Camera

No

These features help prevent accidents and protect occupants in a crash, but they are fairly basic. The Ignis addresses the essential safety measures (pre-tensioning seat belts, airbags, ABS, ISOFIX); however, there are no upscale crash-prevention systems.

Summary

The Maruti Suzuki Ignis is a practical and frugal urban car, but it falls short on modern safety standards. Its 1-star NCAP score (16.48/34), which equips it with basic airbags and brake systems, indicates that occupants will not be well protected in a severe crash.

Maruti has already modified the latest Ignis model to have more airbags and provide ESP, but the official crash test result of the new model remains awaited. Buyers should be aware that this car’s crash protection is limited.

Compared to safer rivals, the Ignis offers less overall protection. For families or safety-conscious drivers, it’s wise to use all available safety gear and consider higher-rated alternatives if possible.

FAQs about Maruti Suzuki Ignis Safety Rating

Q. What is the NCAP safety rating of the Maruti Suzuki Ignis?

The India-made Ignis has been subjected to the new testing protocol used by Global NCAP, and it achieved 1 star in adult occupant safety (16.48/34 points) and 0 stars in child occupant safety. It is yet to be tested by Bharat NCAP.

Q. What safety features does the Ignis have?

The Ignis includes basic safety amenities: dual front airbags, ABS w/ EBD, ISOFIX child-seat anchors, rear parking sensors, seat belt reminders, and the most recent version incorporates Electronic Stability Control (ESP). Is the Maruti Ignis a family-friendly car?

Unfortunately, safety-wise, it’s not the best family choice. It is low-crash protective with a low adult rating of 1-star and no child-star as indicated by NCAP. It has child-seat ISOFIX anchors and 3-point seat belts, outboard seats, but the lack of good performance on the crash-test demonstrates that parents must be cautious.

Q. Does the Ignis have ADAS systems?

No, the Ignis does not have any advanced driver-assistance systems.
