Because of these aspects, the vehicle is popular among first-time car buyers, daily commuters, and families looking for a cheap hatchback.

However, safety has not always been one of the Celerio’s strongest areas. The latest six-airbag version has improved its Global NCAP performance, but its rating still needs to be understood in context.

The present-day Maruti Suzuki Celerio has earned three stars for adult occupant safety and two stars for child occupant safety from Global NCAP. This indicates two ratings instead of one three-star score. The car in question has scored 18.04 points out of 34 for adult safety, and 18.57 points out of 49 for child safety.

Table of Contents

Maruti Celerio Safety Rating at a Glance

Which Maruti Celerio Does This Rating Apply To?

Celerio Adult Occupant Protection Explained

What Does an Unstable Bodyshell Mean?

Celerio Child Occupant Protection Explained

Does the Maruti Celerio Have ISOFIX?

Maruti Celerio Safety Features

Current Six-Airbag Celerio vs Older Celerio Safety Ratings

Is the Celerio Rated by Bharat NCAP?

Is the Maruti Suzuki Celerio Safe?

What to Check When Buying a Used Celerio

FAQs

Maruti Celerio Safety Rating at a Glance

Safety area

Result

Testing organisation

Global NCAP

Test publication year

2025

Adult occupant rating

3 stars

Adult protection score

18.04 out of 34

Child occupant rating

2 stars

Child protection score

18.57 out of 49

Airbags in tested car

6

Electronic Stability Control

Standard

Bodyshell

Unstable

ISOFIX mounts

Not available

Bharat NCAP rating

Not yet published

The three-star adult rating and the two-star child rating concern the six-airbag Celerio identified by Global NCAP with the Vehicle Identification Number MA3TFC62SRM323533. Vehicles produced before this safety update may have different numbers of airbags, and the same should not be assumed.

Which Maruti Celerio Does This Rating Apply To?

Maruti Suzuki made six airbags standard across the Celerio range in May 2025. The current setup includes two front airbags, two front side-chest airbags and two side-curtain airbags. Maruti also lists six airbags as standard on all current Celerio variants.

This fact is important while buying the second-hand Celerio. The second-generation Celerio registered in 2022, 2023, and early 2025 may also be equipped with a maximum of two airbags despite being visually identical to the current version.

Before buying, check:

The manufacturing month and year

The VIN

The number of airbags mentioned in the original brochure

Airbag labels on the front seats and pillars

The RC, invoice and service records

Whether the airbag warning light switches off after starting the car

Don’t place too much faith on the registration year. The car might have been built a few months before it was registered.

Also Read: 4 Things to Check before buying a used Maruti Suzuki Celerio

Celerio Adult Occupant Protection Explained

The six-airbag Celerio scored 18.04 points out of 34 for adult occupant protection. Global NCAP awarded it three stars.

Frontal Impact Protection

In the frontal offset collision test, the driver’s head was offered enough protection, while the front occupant’s head was awarded a good rating. For neck protection, both of the front passengers were rated good.

The driver’s chest received weak protection, while the passenger’s chest received adequate protection. Protection for both occupants’ knees was marginal because they could come into contact with potentially dangerous structures behind the dashboard.

Protection for most of the lower leg areas was rated either adequate or good. However, Global NCAP rated the car bodyshell and footwell as unstable. The report indicated that the bodyshell is unable to endure further loads.

Side Impact Protection

During the side impact test, protection for the head and chest was marginal. Abdomen protection was adequate, while pelvis protection was good.

Side-Pole Impact Protection

The six-airbag variant is also capable of undergoing a side-pole test owing to its side head protection system. The test revealed that the head and pelvis were well protected while marginal protection was provided to the chest and abdomen.

The side and curtain airbags therefore represent a meaningful improvement over the earlier two-airbag car. However, the additional airbags have not changed the frontal bodyshell assessment, which remains unstable.

What Does an Unstable Bodyshell Mean?

The bodyshell is the main structure enclosing the passengers. It cooperates with crumple zones, airbags and seatbelts to dissipate crash energy.

An unstable bodyshell rating means the structure reached its load-bearing limit during the frontal test and could not be expected to withstand greater forces reliably. It does not mean that the cabin will fail in every real-world accident. However, it does show that the basic structure has less safety margin than a stable bodyshell.

Even if airbags are important in protecting the people in the vehicle, they can’t take the place of effective structure protection. Therefore, the Celerio features the six-airbag option yet has a three-star adult rating.

Celerio Child Occupant Protection Explained

The current Celerio received two stars and 18.57 points out of 49 for child occupant protection.

In the frontal assessment made, the forward-facing baby seat utilised for the dummy portraying a three-year-old could not stop the movement of the head into an unprotected position, rating poor for chest and neck protection.

The rear-facing child seat used with the 18-month-old dummy was also ineffective in stopping the head from moving forward during the frontal collision, with the protection for the chest rated as poor. In the case of a lateral collision, the child seat for the 18-month-old dummy provided full protection, but the one for the three-year-old dummy did not restrain the head.

The Celerio performed relatively well in the child-restraint installation assessment, scoring 10.57 out of 12. Its main weakness was the dynamic crash performance rather than the simple ability to fit a child seat.

Does the Maruti Celerio Have ISOFIX?

No. According to Global NCAP, the tested Celerio did not have ISOFIX or i-Size anchorages. For this reason, child seats have to be installed with the help of car seatbelts.

The current car provides three-point seatbelts in all seating positions, which is an improvement over the earlier two-airbag version. However, it does not allow the front passenger airbag to be switched off. A rear-facing child seat should therefore not be installed on the front passenger seat while the airbag is active.

Those thinking about acquiring the Celerio should ensure that they take the child seat with them to evaluate if the seat can be effectively fitted and tightened without too much movement, and whether it has been certified for belt installation.

Used Maruti Celerio Cars

Starting From

₹ 3 Lakh

Explore Pre-Owned Cars

Maruti Celerio Safety Features

The current Celerio offers a more complete safety package than earlier versions.

Six Airbags

The current range features six airbags by default. The driver and passenger in the front seat are provided with frontal crash protection through the front airbags. The side-chest airbags give protection to the front seat passengers in case of a side impact. The curtain airbags are effective in offering additional head protection.

ABS with EBD

The Anti-lock Braking System helps prevent the wheels from locking under hard braking. Electronic Brakeforce Distribution adjusts braking force according to the vehicle’s load and available grip.

Electronic Stability Program

ESP helps to minimise the risks of losing control due to either skidding or other reasons, such as applying brakes selectively to various wheels and adjusting the engine output. Results from Global NCAP showed that the tested vehicle performed well concerning the standard system.

Reverse Parking Sensors

Rear parking sensors warn the driver about nearby obstacles while reversing. They are useful in tight parking spaces but do not replace checking mirrors and looking around the vehicle.

Seatbelts and Reminders

All available seats inside the car come with three-point seatbelts. The car provides the front seat passengers with seatbelt reminders according to the requirements provided by Global NCAP.

Hill-Hold Assist

Hill-hold assist is available with Auto Gear Shift variants. It briefly prevents the car from rolling backward while the driver moves from the brake to the accelerator on an incline. Maruti’s brochure does not present it as a standard feature on every manual variant.

The Celerio has no advanced driver assistance features like autonomous emergency braking, lane assist, or a speed assist system. The global NCAP has noted that all these features are missing from the tested car.

Current Six-Airbag Celerio vs Older Celerio Safety Ratings

The Celerio has been tested in three notably different safety configurations.

Celerio tested

Airbags

Adult rating

Child rating

First-generation version tested in 2016

0

0 stars

1 star

Second-generation version tested in 2025

2

2 stars

1 star

Current second-generation version tested in 2025

6

3 stars

2 stars

The first version of the Celerio, which did not have airbags, got zero out of 17 for adult safety in 2016. Global NCAP also declared it unfit due to the fact that it couldn’t hold its structure under crash tests. However, this result only applies to the no-airbag variant tested, and no conclusions can be drawn about how any first-generation Celerio might perform in case of an accident.

The two-airbag second-generation Celerio received two stars for adults and one star for children. It recorded the same 18.04 adult points as the six-airbag version, but it could not undergo the side-pole test because it lacked side-head protection. Its child score was lower at 9.52 out of 49.

What helps this model achieve a better score is its more advanced airbag system, three-point seat belts at all seating positions, and improved child seat setup. Unfortunately for the first model, despite the success of the current edition in terms of safety, crash tests kept showing that its body structure was weak.

Is the Celerio Rated by Bharat NCAP?

No Bharat NCAP result has been published for the Maruti Suzuki Celerio. Its current three-star adult and two-star child ratings are from Global NCAP. The Celerio does not appear in Bharat NCAP’s published vehicle safety ratings.

Global NCAP and Bharat NCAP follow different rating systems, so there is no reason to think the result derived from one system can be attributed to the other one.

Is the Maruti Suzuki Celerio Safe?

The current Celerio is safer than earlier versions. Six standard airbags, ESP, ABS with EBD, reverse parking sensors and three-point seatbelts in all positions are valuable additions for an affordable city hatchback. The curtain airbags also allow the car to provide side-head protection that was absent from the older two-airbag version.

However, we cannot say that Celerio is among the best crash-safe cars. The final score of the car for adult safety is as low as three stars, the score for child safety is two stars, and its body structure is dangerous due to the absence of ISOFIX systems.

For buyers, this means the Celerio should be considered for its easy city driving, efficiency and ownership convenience, while recognising its safety limitations. The six-airbag model is clearly preferable to an otherwise similar older two-airbag car.

Also Read: Most Fuel Efficient Cars in India

What to Check When Buying a Used Celerio

A used car’s actual safety also depends on its condition. Check the following before purchase:

Confirm the manufacturing date and original airbag count.

Make sure the airbag, ABS and ESP warning lamps switch off after the engine starts.

Inspect the front chassis area, pillars, floor and boot for accident repairs.

Check that all seatbelts retract and lock correctly.

Look for deployed, replaced or poorly refitted airbags and dashboard panels.

Inspect the tyres for age, uneven wear and sidewall damage.

Test the brakes and steering during a professional inspection.

Check whether the child seat can be secured properly using the rear seatbelts.

Review insurance claims, service records and repair invoices.

In the case of an older first-generation Celerio, safety features differ significantly depending on the model and the year of manufacture. Go for a car with standard dual airbags along with anti-lock brakes, rather than choosing a superior variant in the absence of both options. Meanwhile, in the case of newer second-generation models, you have to ensure that the model that you are buying is the variant having either two airbags or six airbags and not merely assume that it enjoys the latest safety features.

FAQs

Q.
