The tax amount finally is inclusive of 11% cess on the tax amount and \u20b91000 cess for private vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Karnataka has some of the highest car-registration taxes in India. The amount is generally collected as lifetime tax when a new private car is registered in the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The applicable tax slab is calculated based on the cost of the vehicle and whether it is a battery-electric vehicle. However, any increase, however small, taking the cost of the vehicle to \u20b910 lakh or more would put it under the 17% slab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These rates apply across Karnataka. A mild hybrid, full hybrid, or plug-in hybrid operates on a combustion engine, so they are not automatically considered under the battery-EV category.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unless a separate exemption or notification applies to the specific vehicle, a hybrid private car will generally be assessed under the regular cost-based car slabs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The assessment of the dealer or registering authority should be taken before finalising the purchase, as it is mandatory to check for certain terms like electric hybrid or self-charging electric vehicle used by the manufacturer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"cess-added-to-karnataka-road-tax\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cess added to Karnataka road tax.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The base lifetime-tax percentage is not the complete amount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Karnataka charges 11% cess on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spinny.com\/blog\/road-tax-rules-regulations-for-cars-in-india\/\">road tax<\/a> paid under Section 3. The assessment carried out either by the dealer or by an RTO will be the final amount to pay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"which-vehicle-price-is-used-for-the-calculation\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which vehicle price is used for the calculation?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Road tax is not calculated on the car\u2019s on-road price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the vehicle is produced in India, the statutory value is determined based on the invoice of the manufacturer or the seller and involves applicable GST, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following are separate from the lifetime-tax calculation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Insurance premium<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Central registration fee<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HSRP charges<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>FASTag cost<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hypothecation fee<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Loan interest<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dealer accessories<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For the imported vehicles, the amount is determined based on a wider cost concept that may include valuation of the vehicle, customs duty, transport costs and applicable taxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"is-lifetime-tax-optional\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is lifetime tax optional?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For a newly registered private car covered by the lifetime-tax schedule, the tax is paid in advance as a lump sum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Annual tax is generally not optional. Upon payment, the vehicle is covered for the duration of use under the provisions of tax laws active in the state of Karnataka, provided that there are no changes in classification or usage of the vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A normal transfer of ownership within Karnataka does not mean that the complete lifetime tax must be paid again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, unpaid tax can be associated with a vehicle. The law of Karnataka allows for recovering any taxes due from those people who take possession of the vehicle under circumstances in which tax is still due.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"road-tax-for-an-outofstate-car-in-karnataka\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Road tax for an out-of-state car in Karnataka<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Any automobile that is not registered in Karnataka has to pay taxes as per the applicable state law after spending a certain period in Karnataka as stated under the laws of Karnataka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This 30-day tax provision is different from the central re-registration rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act states that an automobile that has been located in another state for over 12 months normally has to apply for the registration mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Karnataka tax liability can arise after more than 30 days.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assignment of a Karnataka registration mark generally becomes relevant after more than 12 months.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paying tax does not automatically complete the re-registration process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If the automobile has just been visiting Karnataka, it is essential to create a record of the entry date of the automobile into Karnataka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"agebased-road-tax-for-a-used-outofstate-car\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Age-based road tax for a used out-of-state car<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Karnataka does not normally charge the complete new-car lifetime tax on an older vehicle entering from another state. Then, the RTO applies a percentage based on the age of the vehicle. This same procedure is used in the case of battery electric vehicles as well.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"how-to-pay-karnataka-road-tax-online\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to pay Karnataka road tax online<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Karnataka Transport Department directs vehicle owners to Parivahan\u2019s Vehicle Related Services for online tax and registration services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The general process is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open the official Parivahan Vehicle Related Services portal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select Karnataka.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter the vehicle registration number and requested chassis details.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the available tax or fee service.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Review the tax assessment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete the payment using an available digital method.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Save the receipt.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The lifetime tax for a new vehicle is usually paid at the time of registration through the dealership and the registration authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An out-of-state transfer, re-registration or refund application may still require document verification or a visit to the RTO even when part of the process begins online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"documents-that-may-be-required\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Documents that may be required<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The exact documents depend on the transaction, but they may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Registration certificate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Original vehicle invoice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Active insurance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Valid PUC certificate where applicable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Karnataka address proof<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identity proof<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tax-payment receipt<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No Objection Certificate from the original RTO<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Loan or financier documents where applicable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Proof of the vehicle\u2019s entry or residence in Karnataka<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Forms required for transfer or assignment of a new registration mark<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Always check the list of documents provided on the portal or approach the concerned Karnataka RTO before filing the application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"penalty-for-not-paying-karnataka-road-tax\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Penalty for not paying Karnataka road tax<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A vehicle should not be used in Karnataka without paying tax when tax has become legally due.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tax can be verified by authorised officials through stopping a vehicle. If tax is still not paid, the law of Karnataka permits impounding of the vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When tax remains unpaid for 30 days after seizure, the law also permits recovery through sale of the vehicle after notice and consideration of objections. The vehicle must not be sold when the outstanding tax is paid before the sale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The final amount can comprise tax dues, cess, penalty, and others as determined by the authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"green-tax-in-karnataka\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Green tax in Karnataka<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Green tax applies when an older vehicle reaches the relevant registration or fitness-renewal stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a private non-transport vehicle:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Vehicle<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Green tax<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Two-wheeler after 15 years<\/td><td>\u20b9250<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Private car after 15 years<\/td><td>\u20b9500<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The fee of \u20b9500 is applicable for registration certificate renewal of personal vehicles after 15 years of service. It does not refer to a general annual diesel fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A transport vehicle completing seven years attracts green tax of \u20b9200 per year at fitness-certificate renewal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"karnataka-roadtax-refund\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Karnataka road-tax refund<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A road-tax refund may be considered when:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A vehicle is moved permanently from Karnataka to another state following a change of address.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ownership is transferred to a person in another state.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Registration is cancelled after the vehicle is scrapped due to an accident or another qualifying reason.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to interstate relocation, the proof of transfer or change of address must be submitted to Karnataka for obtaining the refund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The refund is calculated using the statutory refund schedule.
