Muscle cars were born in America in the 1960s and early 1970s, when manufacturers put a large V8 engine in a relatively compact, affordable car. From there, the muscle-car craze spread worldwide. Although muscle-car production stopped years ago, enthusiasts still keep them as classic vintage cars in their collections. As the Indian government allows the import of vintage cars older than 50 years, several classic muscle cars should be high on your list if you have the means and desire to own one.

1970 Ford Mustang Boss 429

The Ford Mustang Boss 429 is one of the rarest collectibles. Built for NASCAR races, the Daytona was the first car in NASCAR history to register a record-shattering 322 km/hr sprint. To make the Daytona, Dodge engineers took the standard Dodge Charger model to the wind tunnel, understanding racing aerodynamic requirements. Consequently, the modifications done to the model lowered its drag coefficient to 0.28 – a jaw-dropping figure even by today’s standards. NASCAR banned the model after several victories in 1969, and only 503 Daytona units were ever produced.

1969 Dodge Charger Daytona Specifications

Engine: 440 cubic-inch (7.2-litre) V8 petrol engine or 426 cubic-inch (7-litre) V8 petrol engine

Transmission: 4-speed manual gearbox or 3-speed automatic transmission

Mileage: 5.11 km/l

Fuel Type: Petrol

Body type: 2-door coupe

Seating Capacity: 5

1965 Shelby GT350R

Developed in collaboration with the legendary Carroll Shelby, the 1965 Shelby GT350R was the performance version of the first-ever Ford Mustang launched in 1964. As a result, Chevrolet put a 454-cubic-inch (7.4-litre) V8 in the Chevelle. It was Chevrolet’s corporate system reserved for fleet vehicles like taxicabs, police cars, and special-purpose orders. It let dealers request non-standard configurations not available through normal channels. To meet demand for more powerful muscle cars, a few dealers used this system to bypass Chevrolet’s strict prohibition on installing engines larger than 400 cubic inches in mid-size or small cars like the Camaro. This led to the making of the most powerful Camaros.

Most COPO Camaros were built under code 9561, which had the L72 427 cubic-inch V8. While this engine was rated at 425 HP on paper, many enthusiasts believe its actual output was substantially higher.

Then there was COPO 9560—the ZL1 Camaro. This model used an all-aluminium ZL-1 427 V-8, which produced more than 550 HP.
