What Does BMW M Stand For?<\/h2>\n\n\n

In the early days, the initials BMW M<\/strong> stood for BMW Motorsport. It started in 1972, and the company\u2019s division aimed to produce race-capable cars to put BMW on the map. Luxury commuters were the last thing the engineers were thinking of back then\u2014all they had in mind was winning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But success in racing soon generated in enthusiasts the desire to have some of the technology in their own garages. So the company decided to take production road cars onto the highways alongside racing-blooded thoroughbreds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first cars were M models, denoted by a number\u2014M1, M3, M5\u2014and they offered different levels of performance promise. Now, the M badge is wider. “Proper” M cars are thoroughly developed within the M division, but there are M Performance versions of BMW too\u2014cheaper ones with sporty bits but lacking the complete M upgrade package. For example, the M340i is an M Performance-tuned car while the M3 is an M car proper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History of BMW M<\/h2>\n\n\n

The origins of BMW M date to the days when the company longed to leave its footprint in touring car championships and long-distance racing. In 1972, BMW Motorsport GmbH was formally established as an autonomous business within the corporation, with only 35 people working there. The first historic assignment they received was the BMW 3.0 CSL, which proved to be the lightweight, wedge-shaped coupe. It quickly gained the name \u201cBatmobile\u201d owing to the radical-looking aero fenders. The 3.0 CSL succeeded in winning multiple European Touring Car Championships and established the marque of BMW’s racing credibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is the mid-mounted BMW M1 of 1978. Co-created alongside Lamborghini (though later made by Baur), the M1 boasted 3.5-litre inline-six power producing 277 hp\u2014astronomical for the time. Iconic to this day, the M1 is remembered for its wedge-like styling penned by the illustrious Giorgetto Giugiaro and for its Group 4 and Group 5 racing heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the 1985 introduction of the E30 M3<\/strong> solidified the M division legend. Engineered to homologate the car for the Group A racing circuit, the E30 M3 combined the high-revved normally aspirated four-banger engine with flared fenders, track-tuned suspensions, and unique handling. It dominated countless touring car championships and solidified the performance sedan paradigm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
