This process is commonly called an RC transfer or vehicle ownership transfer.

The RC identifies the person legally registered as the vehicle’s owner. Until the transfer is approved, government records may continue to show the seller’s name. This can create problems if the vehicle receives traffic challans, becomes involved in an accident or is used for an unlawful activity.

For the buyer, completing the RC transfer is equally important. Without an updated RC, selling the car later, making an insurance claim, renewing certain documents or completing other RTO services may become difficult.

The process can usually be initiated through the VAHAN portal, although document-upload, Aadhaar authentication and faceless-service availability differ between states. Some applicants may still need to visit the RTO.

What Is an RC Transfer?

An RC transfer is the process of replacing the existing registered owner’s name with the buyer’s name in the vehicle-registration records.

It may be required when:

A used vehicle is sold to another person

Ownership passes to a legal heir after the registered owner dies

A vehicle is purchased through a government auction

A financed vehicle is sold after the loan is closed

A vehicle is sold to someone living in another state

A normal used-car sale requires action from both the seller and the buyer.
