A challan is a ticket that is issued by the traffic police to an individual caught violating traffic rules, like jumping a red light or parking in a no-parking zone. On obtaining the challan the violator can either submit the challan on the spot by paying the penalty and receive the receipt or go to the nearest police station to pay and get the receipt. An e-Challan on the other hand is generated electronically by a traffic cop through a device with them.
