Why You Should Buy a Certified Used Car

Owning a car is a milestone in everyone’s life (especially when it’s your first car) and has a lot of emotions attached with it. When purchasing a car, we are faced with three options – new, certified used and non-certified used cars. There’s a lot of confusion regarding the latter two options though the distinction is quite clear. Buying a car requires a big investment and is often a risky affair. The person must know his options before making a decision. In this article, we hope to resolve your dilemma.

A Certified Pre-Owned Car (CPO) is a vehicle that has undergone rigorous inspection and testing by the manufacturer, or a dealership.

After meeting their standards, the vehicle is certified and backed by a limited warranty and a stamp of approval. It is this approval which gives a peace of mind to the buyer. A non-certified car is simply a used car which guarantees the buyer enough savings.

Let’s discuss the benefits associated with a certified used car-

Inspection and Certification

For a car to qualify as CPO, it must meet certain age/distance travelled restrictions as specified by the manufacturer. For example, Maruti Suzuki models less than 7 years old and having less than a lakh kilometres driven qualify to be CPO.

Once this condition is met, the cars undergo inspection which is done on the basis of inspection points which generally range from 100-200 points. If you’re curious about what gets checked in these inspections then have a look at how Spinny carries out its inspections for certification of its cars.

If a car doesn’t meet these standards then the issue must be fixed before it can be sold as a CPO. Finally, when all the requirements are fulfilled the car is certified by the manufacturer or the concerned authority.

As soon as the vehicle is certified, it is provided a limited warranty which ranges from 12 to 36 months depending on the manufacturer or dealer (Hyundai’s H Promise provides a warranty of 1 year or 20,000 Km whichever earlier from the date of delivery). This warranty can also be taken as an extended warranty if the original new car warranty is still active.

A certified warranty means you have the same coverage as that of a new car. Also, in addition to this warranty, many manufacturers provide additional benefits such as roadside assistance, free oil changes, free maintenance and other financial options. The warranty might be transferable depending on the manufacturer/dealer’s policy.

Peace of Mind

It wouldn’t be wrong to say that a certified car buyer gets to enjoy many of the benefits as that of a new car owner. Having an inspected,  warranty covered car saves you time and money taken in getting it done yourself, like purchasing an extended warranty or getting the car inspected by a mechanic (in case of non-certified cars).

With the cars having a high depreciation rate, buying a pre-owned car is a good alternative as it saves you money and serves the purpose. The users of certified cars thus, have this peace of mind that they’ve made a solid purchase.

Worth the cost?

The only con for a certified car would be the cost, a certified car may cost up to 2-8% more than a non-certified car depending on the brand and dealer. For example, if a certified used Swift Dzire model costs around ₹3.70 lakhs, a non-certified model would generally come at ₹3.50 lakhs.

However, even if you save the money at this stage by purchasing a non-certified car you may end up spending more in case of any breakdown. This depends on the age of car you are purchasing. If it’s fairly new, it may not be worth the money to pay for certification. However, if you believe in having a peace of mind that if anything happens to your car it’ll be repaired for free, then going for a certified car is the wisest option.

The bottom line is machines break and they need repair, the benefits associated with a certified car over non-certified car are quite obvious. Whichever option you go for, make sure it is backed up by proper research. You must know what the warranty will be covering so that you make the best use of your hard-earned money.
