As Honda’s entry level hatchback for the Indian Market, the Honda Brio wears Honda’s classic design language that was prevalent in 2011. The headlamps upfront quite resembled a teardrop with black outline separating the headlight barrel from the turn indicators. The grille on the new Brio is quite small compared to the Honda Jazz or the Honda City, but it does feature Honda’s classic chrome moustache. Since the Honda Brio is more of a city car for small families, the side profile of the car is aerodynamic and minimalist. Adding more character to the side profile are the pronounced wheel-arches which do not look empty even with the Honda Brio’s longer suspension and the small 14 inch rims. The rear of the vehicle is the most refreshing thing on the Brio thanks to a radically designed windshield that also acted as the boot-lid. The large glass boot was blackened out at the bottom that not only helped the car look good, but also provides best in class rear visibility. The logo too stands out better on the black background and is well complemented by the triangular rear light cluster which integrated large stop lamps and the usual indicator lights.

In 2017 Honda also gave the Brio a much needed facelift that added an all-new bumper and grille combo to the vehicle. The pre-facelift Brio’s chrome grille was swapped for a gloss black one which gave the vehicle a mature look. The side and rear got no substantial updates, other than the sharp character line that ran across the length, wing-mirror mounted indicators, 15-inch alloy wheels and a stubby spoiler with LED lights. 

Overall, the design of the Honda Brio was and continues to be very fresh, innocent and youthful. It has enough lines and creases to give Hyundai’s ‘fluidic sculpture’ design a tough competition. Honda is a brand that has always managed to pack a large and spacious cabin, even when the outer dimensions suggest otherwise. The dashboard is ergonomically contoured and features a dual-tone colour scheme with a black upper surface, beige door and glove panel. The centre console features Honda’s classic 2-din music system that comes with USB and AUX support. The instrumentation cluster follows the trademark three-pod design by Honda which provided analogue readouts for the speedometer and tachometer and digital readouts for the fuel gauge, trip computer, odometer and instant fuel economy. There is also an “ECO” light present on the instrument cluster that glows when the vehicle is driven economically.

Inside, the lower seating on the Brio instantly provides for better headroom without having a tall-boy design. Coming to seat quality and space, the seating position upfront is comfortable as the front seats provide good back support. Legroom is adequate even for a six-footer, thanks to the scooped out dashboard. As far as the rear is concerned, the seats offer generous leg and knee room, which is quite impressive for a small car. Coming to features, the 2011-2017 Brio featured one-touch auto down (driver) power windows, electrically adjustable ORVMs, beam adjustment for the headlight,and  vanity mirrors for the driver and passenger.

Unlike its larger siblings, the Honda Brio does not feature class-leading boot space. The 175-litre boot is adequate for most city usage but anything more will need lots of adjustment. The experience inside the Honda Brio is a class above with high quality materials and a premium dual tone interior. Overall, the Brio stood out as a hatchback that provided a premium user experience at a low price point. Engine, Performance and Safety

Coming to the engine specs, the Honda Brio is powered by Honda’s 1.2-litre i-VTEC engine,with 88 PS of maximum power and 109 Nm of peak torque. The transmission options include the 5-speed manual transmission and a 5-speed automatic transmission (not CVT). With an ARAI certified mileage of 18.4 kmpl, ultra-light steering and short turning radius, the Honda Brio is the perfect city car for naivgating congested roads.

Another point that impressed considering the Brio’s segment was its high speed stability. The Brio was far ahead of its competitors back then and felt well planted even at high speeds. The edge shaped front bumper mentioned earlier played a key role by reducing unwanted drag. The ride quality is great most of the time and it isn’t unsettled on bad and bumpy roads.

Coming to the safety department the Honda Brio was offered with i-SRS driver and front passenger airbags which are standard on the S and V variants. The i-SRS airbags boasted a ‘spiral’ construction as opposed to conventional airbags. This design allowed the airbags to open faster, with a lesser impact and stay inflated for a longer duration. Other safety features onboard were ABS, EBD, and Engine Immobilizer. The front body structure is also equipped with pedestrian injury mitigation technology designed to absorb impact energy, sparing the pedestrian as well as the occupants from severe injuries.

Honda’s cute and unconventional exterior design is what made the Honda Brio a car that aged quite well. Even if you buy the initially launched 2011 variant of the Brio, the vehicle’s peppy performance, solid build quality, and stylish stance will never make you feel like you’re driving an entry level hatchback.
