Renault India has claimed that it has crossed sales of around 3.5 lakh units in India for the Renault Kwid hatchback. In an effort to further bolster their position, Renault India is introducing a new variant, the Renault Kwid 1.0 RXL, to provide buyers with a mid-variant equipped with a 1.0-litre engine, similar to the higher specced Renault Kwid RXT variants.
What is the new Renault Kwid RXL variant?
The introduction of the new Renault Kwid variant introduces a 1.0-litre engine to the list of engine options you can opt for with the Kwid. Prior to this introduction, Renault offered the RXL variant with a 0.8-litre engine, similar to the base STD and RXE variants.
The availability of the 1.0-litre engine in the mid-variant offers buyers a more powerful engine at a lower price point than the Kwid 1.0 RXT variant. The addition of the larger engine also means that the automatic Easy-R transmission of the Kwid will be available in the mid-variant.
Speaking of technical differences, the 1.0-litre 3 cylinder engine in the Renault Kwid provides 68 PS of power with 91 NM of torque compared to the lower 54 PS of power and 72 NM of torque produced by the 0.8-litre 3 cylinder engine. In terms of fuel efficiency, the 1.0-litre engine provides 21.74 kmpl while the 0.8-litre provides 20.71 kmpl. While pretty similar, depending on your driving style, the larger engine will provide better mileage in the long run.
Apart from this difference, the Renault Kwid 1.0 RXL variant retains the same feature list as the Renault Kwid 0.8 variant. This compact car has a muscular design that looks like an SUV at first glance. The front facade has been redesigned for the 2019 refresh with C-shaped signature headlamps with body colored bumpers which adds to unified look. This variant also gives out a sporty feel with black decals by the door side.
In the interior, the Renault Kwid 1.0 RXL features an integrated stereo system, driver-side airbag, ABS, and a digital instrument cluster. The interior fabrics have been given the dual-tone treatment, giving it a sportier appeal inside.
Renault Kwid 1.0 RXL vs. Renault Kwid 1.0 RXT
With the introduction of a cheaper 1.0-litre option, the Renault Kwid RXL has become a more enticing option than before. However, the RXT variant still offers some features that are missing on the mid-variant Kwid. The 8-inch touchscreen display is only available on the top of the range RXT variant while the RXL variant is equipped with an integrated stereo system. In terms of safety, the RXT variant also has the option of equipping a passenger side airbag while the RXL can only be equipped with a driver-side airbag. These convenience and safety features make the Renault Kwid RXT a more complete package than the Renault Kwid RXL variant. When you factor in the availability of used Renault Kwid RXT cars on Spinny for as low as Rs. 2.49 lakhs, the higher price tag of a new Renault Kwid 1.0 RXL at Rs. 4.16 lakhs doesn’t appear to be appealing.
